Stephen Francis Power

Power, Stephen Francis Age 69, of Halifax. It is with heartbreak and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Stephen Francis Power, on October 27, 2023.

Steve was born in Halifax to his adoptive parents, the late Leslie F. and Marie (Blackburn) Power.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Barbara (Levy) Power; daughter, Shauna Power (Ryan Stevens), Salmon River; son, Matthew Power (Amber), Bedford; mother-in-law, Doris (Faulkner) Levy, Halifax; brother, Richard Power, London, ON; sister-in-law, Heather Levy, Halifax; brother-in-law, Don Levy, Middle Musquodoboit; grandsons, Finn and Knox Stevens, Salmon River; and granddaughter, Ivy Power, Bedford. Steve is also survived by half-sisters, Alice (DeRabbie) Squires, Ajax, ON; Debra (Ryter) Boudreau, Miramichi, NB; half-brothers, Jim DeRabbie, Dartmouth; Brian Ryter, Dartmouth; William Ryter (Cecil Hupman), Summerville Centre, NS; Kevin Ryter, Dartmouth; Dale Ryter (Alanna), Lower Sackville; step-father, Les Ryter, Antigonish; step-mother, Florence Bennett, Canso; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his adoptive parents, Steve is predeceased by his birth mother, Mary (DeRabbie) Ryter; birth father, Gerald Bennett; father-in-law, Fred Levy; and his beloved border collie, Ben.

He was a loving and supportive husband, an excellent and present father to his children, and he loved his grandchildren to the moon and back. He was always there to help and lend support whenever needed. He had a big love for stale cheezies, Diet Coke, cold beer, old movies (The Duke was his favorite), and chasing after Ben. He enjoyed working on special projects and visiting with his family and friends at his cottage on Lake Torment. Steve loved to chat; he could strike up a conversation with anyone, whether it was with his neighbors during his morning walks or sharing a morning tea and muffin with his McDonald’s buddies. Steve worked for Canada Post for 33 years, retiring in 2009. He was very active in the community – he was a Scout Leader for more than 30 years, both in Lower Sackville and in Halifax. He was also a member of the Fairview area Joint Emergency Management (JEM) team and was actively involved with the Fairview Food Pantry Project.

The family wishes to express their sincerest thanks and appreciation to the staff of the QEII Emergency Department and the 6th Floor Cardiac Unit. A special thanks goes out to Dr. Amanda Bettle for her excellent care and compassion during the most difficult night of our lives.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023 in Sackville NS Lions Club, 101 Old Beaverbank Rd, Lower Sackville. Visitation will be from 2 - 4 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service from 6 - 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation of non-perishable food and toiletries to your local community pantry/food bank or monetary donations to the SPCA.
