Mosher, Mona Irene Millicent (Blakeney) – formerly of Oyster Pond, NS passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026 in Dartmouth, NS after a long illness at age 85.
Mona was driven by her Baptist faith, family, fostering growth in others and fellowship in community.
Born in Oyster Pond, she was a daughter of the late Merle (Mitchell) and Cyril Blakeney. Mona is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Angus “Gus”; daughters, Lisa Mosher (Kerry Sleep) and Andrea McNeil (Robin); grandchildren, Brooke McNeil and Blake McNeil; and her siblings, Brenda Charest, Ward Blakeney and Drew Blakeney. She also leaves behind sisters-in-law, Pearl Turner and Jean Keizer; several nieces, nephews and life long friends. Besides her parents, Mona was predeceased by her siblings, Carmen Blakeney and Mavis Turple.
A talented teacher, Mona was a graduate of the Old Provincial Normal College and Saint Mary’s University. She was a dedicated educator for 33 years having spent most of her career as a math teacher at Eastern Shore District High School. Mona was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal for her contribution to education, although her greatest reward was seeing previous students being successful in their chosen careers as adults later in life. She loved seeing them in the community and hearing their stories.
Mona was an active and committed volunteer in her community for most of her life. She was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary at District 19 East Oyster Pond Fire Hall and was active for many years in supporting the Baptist and United churches.
Following retirement, Mona enjoyed gardening, golfing and spending time with her cherished grandchildren. Mona and Gus spent much of retirement travelling the world together, enjoying many cruises and escaping Nova Scotia winters in Myrtle Beach.
A Celebration of Life will be held 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026 in Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161, Gaetz Brook 6644 Nova Scotia Trunk 7.
