Hugh Roderick MacKay

It is with great sadness we announce the death of Hugh Roderick MacKay, aged 86, of Shubenacadie, on May 25, 2026 after a lengthy illness. Born in Baddeck, Hughie married his high school sweetheart Margie (nee Hutchison) in 1958. They owned MacKay's Dairy in Baddeck for a number of years, before moving their young family to Shubenacadie in the early 70's where they remained the rest of their lives. Hugh’s love of working with horses is what drew him to the Truro area and the Truro Raceway. He owned stables there. It was during that time Dr. James Shives met Hughie and told him he was “looking for a good man to work for him.” Hughie’s  reply was “Well, you just found him.” This started a friendship that lasted over 50 years. Dr. Shives was like a brother to Hughie and Penn Hills farm was his beloved home.Hughie was kind, funny, quiet, loved music and to strum a few songs on his guitars, especially for the little ones who all adored him. He was a life time member of Standardbred Canada and was one time notably named Senior Horseman of the Year. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Margie; son, David; and he is the last member of his generation of the “Water St., Baddeck MacKays”. He is survived by his son, Hugh Jr. (Patsy) Stewiacke; daughter, Shirley, Baddeck; grandchildren, Trisha (Jesus); Tasha (Tim); Richelle (Ryan); Keshia (Mitchel); Alana and great-grandchildren, Dante, Alonso, Santiago, Emma, Lilly, Harlee, Paisley, Gus, Anthony, Linden, Shelby, and many nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks go out to Hughie’s nephew, Guy and partner Diane, for coming to stay at the farm and the many visits to help care for him; to his granddaughter, Alana for the long hard nights at the hospital; and to all the homecare workers, nurses, doctors, palliative care and hospital staff who all helped with his care. Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 4, at 2 p.m. in Shubenacadie United Church with Rev. Natalie Buchanan-Rutherford officiating.

Jane Melanie Crawford

Crawford, Jane Melanie – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jane Melanie Crawford on May 24, 2026, in Colchester East Hants Heath Centre, following a long and courageous battle with liver cirrhosis. Jane is predeceased by her beloved husband, Dennis Crawford, whom she loved so dearly. Survived by her parents, Mary-Lou and Ross Higgins. She is lovingly remembered by her brothers, Mike (Janet) and Glen (Sheila); along with many nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart. Of course, she will be missed by faithful companion, Eddie Boy. Above all else, Jane’s greatest pride and joy was her family. Her boys meant everything to her. She leaves behind her four beloved sons, Kyle (Kate), Adam (Jessie), Bret (Claire), and Trevor, who were the center of her world. She was an incredibly proud grandmother to Madalynn, Baylie, Georgia, Zoey, Hazel, Cole, Audrey, Floyd, and Olivia, each of whom brought immeasurable happiness and purpose to her life. Nothing lit up Jane more than time spent with her children and grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished forever. There was truly no one quite like Jane. To know her was to experience kindness in its purest form. She had a way of making everyone feel welcome, cared for, and important. Her generosity knew no limits, and she gave so much of herself to the people she loved without ever expecting anything in return. Jane carried herself with quiet strength, grace, and compassion, even through life’s hardest moments. Jane dedicated many years of her life to Sobeys where, through her hard work and determination, worked her way into a management role. Along the way, she formed many lifelong friendships and became someone coworkers could always depend on. Her warmth, sense of humour, and caring nature left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her. Some of the most treasured memories of Jane were made in her kitchen. Whether she was baking along side her grandchildren, preparing a family meal, or creating one of her beautiful birthday cakes, she had a way of making ordinary moments feel special. Her home was a place of comfort, laughter, and unconditional love. Jane always made room for others, and no matter the circumstance, she could somehow find the brighter side of things. She was the person people turned to for comfort, advice, or simply a reassuring presence. Jane’s love was steady, selfless, and deeply felt by all who knew her. The loss of her leaves an emptiness that cannot be filled, but her love, lessons, and beautiful spirit will continue to live on through her family and all the lives she touched. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.A Celebration of Life to honour both Jane and Dennis Crawford will be held in Nine Mile River Community Centre on Sunday, May 31 from 1pm-3pm. Willard Fredrick Hiltz

Hiltz, Willard Fredrick – It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news of our Dad, Willard Fredrick Hiltz, of Dutch Settlement, who passed away on May 22, 2026 at the age of 87.

He was born and raised in Chester and was a son of the late Rufus and Dorothy (Pulsifer) Hiltz.

During his many years of trucking, he worked at various companies. Beginning at Dartmouth Lumber and ending his career at Quality Concrete (Dartmouth). Dad would come out of retirement occasionally to drive when someone needed him.

It was in the beginning at Dartmouth Lumber where he met Mom, the love of his life, Jean (Hurshman). They were married for fifty-six years until Mom’s passing in 2015.

Together they raised four children, were blessed with nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Dad would give his shirt off his back or lend a hand to anyone in need. Dad’s favorite pastimes were spent fishing (regardless of the weather), playing crib and coffee times at Tim’s. More than any of this, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Left to miss him dearly are his children, Lenny (Darlene), John (Shawna), Cindy (Will) Pearo, and Jamie (Connie); grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Mona Arnold, Saskatchewan; sister-in-law, Agnes Hurshman, Dutch Settlement; fishing and crib buddies, Bobby and Terry; Princess Auto shopping buddy, Donny; special fur grandchild, Leroy who adored Papa.

He was predeceased by mom, Jean; his parents, Rufus and Dorthy “Dolly” Hiltz; sister, Doris (Bill Venator); brothers, Floyd, Jerry; grandsons, Mathew and Robert.

Visitation will be held in Carrolls Corner Rec Hall, 9 Milford Road on Thursday, May 28, 2026 from 6-8 p.m.

Funeral Service in St. George’s Church, Dutch Settlement, on Friday May 29th, 2026, at 2 p.m., with Rev. David Flecther officiating. A family burial will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Lung Association or a charity of your choice.

Cory Cooper

Cooper, Cory – It is with great sadness and our deepest heartbreak to announce the unfathomable passing of Cory Cooper in the early hours of May 21st, 2026, in QEII, Halifax Infirmary Site, surrounded by family. 

Cory was born in 1984 in Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital in Sheet Harbour to his mother, Joyce (Munroe) and father, Cameron Cooper.

He is survived by his mother, Joyce (Munroe) Erskine; father, Cameron Cooper (Wanda); siblings, Wayne Cooper (Pamela), William Cooper (Raven), Caleb Erskine, Shealeen Gagnon (Ryan), Kalen Erskine, Morgan Cooper (Brian), Cheyenne Cooper (Brandon), Brandon Cooper (Latisha), Luke Smiley; paternal grandmother, Sharon Cooper; maternal grandmother, Ada Munroe; aunts and uncles, Lisa Cooper, Melinda Cooper, Jeannie Munroe Stevens (Brian), Marilyn Munroe, Russell Munroe (Linda); nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly. 

He had a deep love of the outdoors, his family, and his kitty, Midnight who followed him around like a shadow. He carried around a natural and effortless artistic talent, and the ability to spread laughter wherever he went, to whoever he was with. Anyone who knows him will remember him for his kind, soft heart as he was genuinely one of the kindest, warmest people down to his core.

Always tinkering, never still, he was a jack of all trades always happy to help loved ones in any way that he could. He is often regarded as someone who would give the shirt off of his back to any stranger who needed it and always seeing the best in people despite their circumstances. 

Cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Bruce Paul Smiley

Smiley, Bruce Paul – It is with heavy hearts that the family of Bruce Paul Smiley, announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, May 20, 2026 in his home in Enfield.

Bruce was born at the Truro Hospital in 1953. He was a son of the late Eunice (Langille) and Ray Smiley.

He is survived by his loving wife, MaryEllen (Horne); his beloved daughters, Jessica Smiley, Joanna Smiley; two adored granddaughters, Jewel and Aujrina;, and sister, Darlene Walsh (Richard).

Bruce grew up and went to school (often reluctantly) in Shubenacadie and Hants East Rural High School.

He was never happier than when he was in the woods and spending time at his beloved camp. Hunting and fishing had been part of his life from a very young age and nature was where he felt most at home. The outdoors was not simply a pastime for him, it was part of who he was.

Though he liked to present himself as a bit of a hermit, those who knew him best knew otherwise. He valued his many friendships and kept in touch with many over the years, often appearing unexpectedly for a coffee and a visit. Beneath the “tough guy” exterior was a man with a wonderful sense of humour and a genuinely soft heart.

A man of many talents, there seemed to be very little he couldn't build, fix, or create. From small handmade toys, to houses, to barns, his craftsmanship and ingenuity were remarkable. If something was broken, chances were he could repair it and cook a steak while doing it!

He also had a deep passion for wood turning. Through this art, he created stunning bowls and sculptural pieces that reflected both his creativity and his connection to the natural world he loved so much. His beautiful works have found homes with many people and will remain treasured reminders of his talent, artistry, and spirit for years to come.

He was deeply loved and we will miss him and his big personality forever.

He has been cremated and the family would like to invite those who wish to come to an Open House to celebrate his life at his home at 7 Arrowhead Lane, Enfield, from 1-4 on Saturday, May 30, 2026.

Delbert Munroe Brown

Brown, Delbert Munroe – age 87 of Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2026 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre – Palliative Care, Truro with family by his side.

Born in Kempt Shore, he was a son of the late Percy and Hazel (Sanford) Brown.

Delbert was involved with the fruit and vegetable business since 1958 and family-owned Valley Fruit and Vegetables for over 30 years in Shubenacadie East. Delbert was well-respected in the Annapolis Valley by all the distributors he did business with. He contributed through the business to many community events. Delbert was an avid hunter, pool player and had a love for old country music, Dodge trucks and Montreal Canadiens.

He will always be loved and missed by his wife, Betty; first born daughter, Angela (Todd); care-giver daughter, Alicia (Roland); devoted son, Rod (Holly); granddaughter, Brooke (Owen); great-grandson, Weston Noble; sister, Velva Neal; several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by siblings, Goldie, Guy, Lilly, Dolly, Joyce, Dot, Viola, Patsy, Daisy and Sandra.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service.

Tracey Leah Dawn Preeper

Preeper, Tracey Leah Dawn – age 57, of Truro, passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre on May 18, 2026 with family by her side.

Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late David and Marina (Higgins) Burgess.

Tracey was passionate about loving the people close to her and this shone through the brightest with her grandchildren. Her favorite go to place was Folly Lake with an ice capp in her hand. This was where she felt most at home and most free. She was never alone in mischief, her best friend and partner in crime, Natalie, was her chosen sister and together they shared a bond of laughter, secrets and the kind of friendship most people only dream of.

Tracey will always be loved and missed by daughter, Jessica (Robert); son. Mathew; bonus daughters, Rebekah (Dustin), Toni (Janelle); grandchildren, Haylie, Winter, Hannah, Ryland, Brayden, Robert, Millie, Kane, Ryker, Parker-Mae; brother, Michael; sister, Shelley.

She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; daughter, Samantha; and special aunt, Susan “Duckie”.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Violet "Susanna" Henley

 Henley, Violet Susanna– Age 81 of Pleasant Valley passed away peacefully at home on May 18, 2026, surrounded by family. Born in Upper Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Ellison and Mary Gale.   Susie’s heart was so big. She had the kindest soul and truly believed that if you had love, you could overcome anything. To her, love was never measured by material things, but by the kindness and warmth you carried in your heart. She opened her home to everyone and treated anyone who walked through her doors as if they were her family. She would never let anyone go without, even if it meant she did. She loved deeply, fiercely, and unconditionally. The kind of love that stays with you forever. She had a sharp wit, a sense of humour that could make anyone laugh, and absolutely no filter. She told you exactly how it was, even when you didn’t want to hear it, and somehow that honesty was part of what made her so special. The way she connected with people, and even animals, was something no one could truly explain. Despite enduring more loss than most could imagine, she carried herself with incredible resilience and continued to show endless love, patience, kindness, and understanding to everyone around her. She taught us more about love and life than anyone else ever could. Susanna loved her pets Benny, Stella, Sunshine, Preston, Frank, and Patty. She will always be loved and missed by daughter, Sally; brother, Curtis (Barb); grandchildren by choice, Hayley, MacKenzie, Alyssa, Austin, Daxton; many special nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, Frances and Lynda.  She was predeceased by her husband, Howard; children, Colleen, Vickey, and Elwin; siblings, Arnold, Clayton, Walter (Sylvia), Frank (Amy), Ellie (Harold), Ruth (Marshall), Gordon, Stella (Gerald), Leland, and Elwyn. A graveside service will be held Friday at 2pm in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit. A reception will follow in Upper Musquodoboit Fellowship Hall from 2:30pm to 4:00pm. Memorial donations to a local SPCA would be appreciated. Special thanks to Rosemary, Janet, Jenny, Calvin, special friend and sister-in-law, Luella, for all they did to help out. Thanks to homecare nurses and Dr. Day for the care they gave. She was truly one of a kind and irreplaceable in every sense. The memories we shared, the lessons she taught us, and the love she gave so freely will live on through all of us forever.

Maxine Sue (Williams) Gaetz

Gaetz, Maxine Sue (Williams) – of Musquodoboit Harbour. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear friend and sister, Maxine Sue (Williams) Gaetz, on May 17, 2026, at the age of 80.

Maxine will be remembered for her vibrant spirit, love of cards, exceptional cooking, and the joy she brought to every gathering. Born in a small fishing community, Maxine was the youngest of six children and the daughter of the late Arthur and Sadie Williams. After graduating from high school, she moved to the city and began a successful 30-year career with the Bank of Nova Scotia. She and Graham traveled the globe before settling in their seaside home in Petpeswick, where they loved entertaining family and friends and enjoying the beautiful sunsets, always with a crib board close at hand.

Maxine was predeceased by her beloved husband, Graham R. Gaetz.

She is survived by her brothers-in-law, Clifford Gaetz and Floyd Gaetz; her sister-in-law, Darlene Gaetz; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will cherish her memory. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Twin Oaks and Parkland for the wonderful care Maxine received in her final months. Special thanks are also extended to Paul Patterson, and to Vern and Jane Haverstock, for the tremendous support and kindness shown to Maxine after Graham’s passing.

A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday June 4, 2026 in Royal Canadian Legion Branch #161 Gaetz Brook from 2 to 4 p.m.

Arthur "Art" Keeble

Keeble, Arthur "Art" was born in Stoney Creek, Ontario and passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour at 90 years of age. Art was predeceased by his first wife, Marie; sisters, Dorothy, Lois and Barbara; stepdaughter, Colleen (Mike) Spicer. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, AnnaMarie (Charlie) Blanchard; son, Roy (Edna) Keeble; stepdaughter, Donna (Chris) Purcell; stepson, Randy (Nikki) Imlay; numerous grand and great-grandchildren. Also left to mourn are his non-humans, Luke, Axel and Archie. Art spent 25 years with the RCN, retiring in 1977 as a CPO1. Following this he tried his hand at farming in Upper Rawdon, until he found out it was work. In 1982 he and a partner started CFP, a business where he worked with and taught hydraulics, retiring again 10 years later. Art enjoyed collecting old tools and oddities, and was rarely happier than when he was figuring out what some mysterious old gadget had once been used for, or convincing somebody else of a completely made-up explanation. He loved sharing stories with friends and family and was known for his dry wit, curiosity, ingenuity, and practical jokes delivered so straight-faced that people often didn’t realize that they’d been had. As long time members of the Atlantic Tool Collectors Association, he and Barb wrote the club newsletter for 10 years. Art was also in charge of the “What’s It” table, which was right up his alley! He cherished the friendships he made there. As a dedicated volunteer, Art spent many years as an animator at Memory Lane Heritage Village, a place he truly loved. He also gave his time for eight years to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital as a greeter/helper. The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers in Twin Oaks who cared for Art with kindness and compassion during his final days. A very special thank you must go to his home caregivers; Amber, who became almost like another daughter; Marilyn, who sang to him every morning; and Sue, with whom he shared many interests. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or funeral service. Those wishing to remember Art should get together and “Shoot the Sh**” with a good friend or two, and then go have an ice cream cone. Memorial donations to Souls’ Harbour Rescue Mission, Twin Oaks Health Care Foundation or any Dog Rescue would be appreciated.

Elizabeth Jean Woolridge

Elizabeth Jean Woolridge - formerly of Newfoundland and Enfield passed away peacefully on her 86th birthday on May 13, 2026 after a lengthy battle with illness Betty lived a full life embracing every opportunity offered to her for fun, adventure, and friendship. A fiercely independent woman Betty decided her own path and faced the many obstacles in her way with grit, determination and grace. Predeceased by her husband, Mike; son, Chris; and brother, Bill - Betty leaves behind years of “Bette stories” to be retold and remembered by her son, Mike; daughter, Michele (John); grandchildren, Katie (Myles), Mandi, Drew and her greatest joy – her great-granddaughter, Eden – also her little sister, Janet. Her extended in-law family, whom she treasured dearly, and many friends from near and far will remember her strength and feisty nature.

Betty gave of herself through service to others.  Whether it was volunteering with various organizations or feeding others in her home – there was always time in her schedule to help someone or room at her table for “one more.’ Betty enjoyed her life at Parkland, pub nights with friends, motorcycle rides thanks to “Share the Wind”, Merry Widows nights with her girls, and morning coffees. Her days were full of friendship, laughter and love. Betty told her friends the happiest moment of her life was meeting and looking into the eyes of her great grandchild – just a week before her passing. As was her way, Mom went in her own way and in her own time – we would have expected nothing less from her.

A reception celebrating Betty will be held in Parkland Clayton Park, Cameron Hall, Thursday, May 21 at 1:00 pm.

Fraser, Fredrick  “Fred” – A graveside service for family and friends will be held on May 23, 2026 at 1 p.m. in Higginsville Cemetery. A reception will follow at Bicentennial Theatre, Middle Musquodoboit. 

Gordon "Gordie" Hill

Hill, Gordon “Gordie” – A graveside Celebration of Life will be held on May 23 at 1:30 p.m. in Pine Grove Cemetery, East Stewiacke, with a reception to follow in West St. Andrews Community Hall.

Mary Genevieve Goodwin

Goodwin, Mary Genevieve – age 61, of Fort Ellis passed away peacefully on May 11, 2026 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in New Glasgow, she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Hayman) Goodwin.

For a number of years Gen worked as a cook in various restaurants, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, spending time by the water and doing diamond art.

Surviving are her daughters, Starr Angel Mae Melanson, Marlana Christine (Mirza) Delbegovic; son, Paul Michael Koerner; brothers, Billy Goat, Herbie Goat, Johnny Goat, Mark Goat; sister, Debbie Goodwin. She also is survived by Andy and Sherry where she lived during a difficult time in her life.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, John Colin Goodwin and James Stephen Goodwin.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral service.

Janet Elaine (Kennedy) Watt

Watt, Janet Elaine (Kennedy) – Age 62 of North River, passed away on May 9, 2026.

She was a daughter of the late David and Carmitta Kennedy.

Janet grew up in Upper Stewiacke on her family’s dairy farm and attended South Colchester High School. She was involved in her local 4-H group, was a Sunday School teacher and played ringette. After graduating from Dalhousie, Janet was a nurse for 40 years spending the last 37 years at VON and most recently as Senior Management for the Truro Branch. Janet and Gary’s love story started in 1992 after meeting at a horse show, and they stayed passionately in love until Gary’s passing on January 5, 2026. Janet was heavily involved in the draft horse world, attending any show in the Maritimes that happened. But the Maritimes were not enough, and Janet, with her son and husband, attended every World Percheron Congress that was in North America. She was often found in the announcer’s booth at horse shows. Janet knew every exhibitor that entered the ring and could tell you all about their families as they went around the ring. But beyond her investment in the adult exhibitors, Janet had a special place in her heart for the youth draft horse program. She brought life back into the Nova Scotia Youth Draft Horse Program, sponsoring many events and making sure the young exhibitors had their prizes and their shirts. She always carried a box of smarties or had a few candies in her bag for the young exhibitors and even a few of the adult exhibitors as well. Janet shared this love of the draft horse world with her husband and her son.

Her son, Cory was her greatest pride and joy. Everything she did was for him. And he embodies her spirit and her passions in life. Janet loved to visit craft sales and go on adventures with her sister, Maxine. A few years ago, the two of them realized a lifelong dream of travelling to New York around Christmas to skate on the ice in the park. Janet had a passion for family. When Cory was younger, she would often organize trips for “the cousins” to go on. Even once her own son was grown up, she still enjoyed following her nieces and nephews in their sports and life adventures and asked daily about Jace and Jocee’s weekly events.

Janet is survived by her son, Cory Watt and daughter-in-law, Taylor Watt; brothers, Don (Kathy), Larry (Lynne); sisters, Ardith (Grant), Maxine (Frank); sister-in-law, Nancy; nephews, Mark (Laura), Peter (Katie), Bobby, Ryan, Kevin (Carla); nieces, Shelley, Sandra (Tim), Jill, Kelly (Marc), Angela (Brian), Lesley (Brian), Amy (Matthew); great-nephews, Luke (Chloe), Riley (Maddie), Linden (Chloe), Parker, Jack, Finn, Cameron, Ewan, Abe, Ethan, Lou; great-nieces, Rebecca (Alex), Katelyn (J.T.), Kennedy, Christine (Peter), Holly, Abby, Sophie, Renee, Ella, Leah, Emily and Maely; great great-nephews, Henry and Ethan; and great great-nieces, Amelia and Aubree.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gary; brothers, Stephen, Arlen; niece, Amie; and grandparents, Raymond and Isabel Deyarmond and Arthur and Lillian Kennedy.

Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, with funeral service Thursday at 2 p.m., both in Upper Stewiacke United Church.

Margaret Inez Jennings

Jennings, Margaret Inez – age 84, of Elmsvale, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026. Born in Centre Musquodoboit, she lived a life defined by helping others and being involved in her community.

She is survived by sisters, Evelyn McLean and Carol Richardson; brothers, Edwin (Roberta) Jennings and Byron (Sally) Jennings; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, and great-grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Edna Jennings, and her brothers-in-law, Lawerence McLean and Stanley Richardson. Margaret enjoyed getting together with the whole family, often hosting at her home in Elmsvale.

Margaret served many roles: sister, aunt, great-aunt, friend, and notably, teacher. Margaret’s passion for teaching was evident at a young age, making it clear from her entry to high school that the teaching profession was for her. After graduating from Musquodoboit Rural High School, Margaret went on to obtain her teaching licence from the Normal College in Truro. She moved to Windsor, Ontario, where she taught for many years and obtained her Master of Education from the University of Windsor. She also attended the University of Victoria for training in the ministry. She enjoyed being with children and had a passion for teaching special education and primary classes.

Outside of teaching, Margaret was involved in many community organizations. She was an advocate for environmental protection and enjoyed watching and feeding birds, which lead her to become involved in nature groups. Margaret was involved in the New Democratic party at both the provincial and federal level.  She was an active member of her church and volunteered for many community events. However, if Margaret was not occupying her time with one of these activities, you could often find her at her computer or reading a book, with her cats, Tommy and Missy, curled up by her side.

A funeral service will be held for Margaret on Monday, May 18th, in Riverside Church, Elmsvale at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to one of Margaret’s favourite charities: Canadian Red Cross, Musquodoboit Valley Food Bank Association, Nature Conservatory, SPCA or Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation.

Mona Irene Millicent (Blakeney) Mosher

Mosher, Mona Irene Millicent (Blakeney) – formerly of Oyster Pond, NS passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026 in Dartmouth, NS after a long illness at age 85.

Mona was driven by her Baptist faith, family, fostering growth in others and fellowship in community.

Born in Oyster Pond, she was a daughter of the late Merle (Mitchell) and Cyril Blakeney. Mona is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Angus “Gus”; daughters, Lisa Mosher (Kerry Sleep) and Andrea McNeil (Robin); grandchildren, Brooke McNeil and Blake McNeil; and her siblings, Brenda Charest, Ward Blakeney and Drew Blakeney. She also leaves behind sisters-in-law, Pearl Turner and Jean Keizer; several nieces, nephews and life long friends. Besides her parents, Mona was predeceased by her siblings, Carmen Blakeney and Mavis Turple.

A talented teacher, Mona was a graduate of the Old Provincial Normal College and Saint Mary’s University. She was a dedicated educator for 33 years having spent most of her career as a math teacher at Eastern Shore District High School. Mona was a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Medal for her contribution to education, although her greatest reward was seeing previous students being successful in their chosen careers as adults later in life. She loved seeing them in the community and hearing their stories.

Mona was an active and committed volunteer in her community for most of her life. She was a founding member of the Ladies Auxiliary at District 19 East Oyster Pond Fire Hall and was active for many years in supporting the Baptist and United churches.

Following retirement, Mona enjoyed gardening, golfing and spending time with her cherished grandchildren. Mona and Gus spent much of retirement travelling the world together, enjoying many cruises and escaping Nova Scotia winters in Myrtle Beach.

A Celebration of Life will be held 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026 in Royal Canadian Legion Branch 161, Gaetz Brook 6644 Nova Scotia Trunk 7.

Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.

Alan Gregory MacKay

MacKay, Alan Gregory – age 71 of Dartmouth, passed away May 6, 2026 in Halifax Infirmary with family by his side.

Al is survived by daughter, Teresa Destromp; granddaughter, Madison; brother, Richard; brother-in-law, Jim Rogers; and many nieces and nephews.

Al was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Alice (Deyarmond) MacKay; sister, Freda Rogers; and brother, Ian.

He will be fondly remembered by his coworkers at Stock Transportation and Brightwood Golf and Country Club.

There will be burial at a later date.

Christine B. (Walsh) Wry

Wry, Christine B. (Walsh) – passed away on December 16, 2025. Please join us as we say our final goodbyes to Christine B. Wry at a graveside committal service on Monday, May 11 at 1 p.m. in Brookside Cemetery, Mill Village, Shubenacadie. A reception will follow in Brookfield Fire Hall from 2-4 p.m.

Donald "Don" Edward Levy

Levy, Donald “Don” Edward – age 72, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026 at his home in Middle Musquodoboit surrounded by his family and close friends after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Halifax, Don was a son of the late Frederick and Doris (Faulkner) Levy. Don was a kind, intelligent, and gentle man who was always thinking of others before himself. He was a man of few words, but he had a quick wit and a devilish grin. Don grew up in Fairview and attended Halifax West High School before graduating from the Nova Scotia Institute of Technology (NSCC) with a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.

As a young boy and throughout his teenage years, Don was actively involved with Scouts Canada and worked at Camp Lone Cloud. Following graduation, he built a long and prestigious career as an Engineering Tech and then as a Project Manager in the Marine Division of Westinghouse (now Siemens) before retiring in 2013.

Don loved the outdoors and found great joy in nature and the simple pleasures of life at his home in Middle Musquodoboit. He gardened, hunted, fished, and found great pride in producing the perfect Christmas tree! Don was an avid golfer and a longtime member at the Brightwood Golf Club. He also enjoyed flying his airplane and taking annual adventurous trips with his long-time buddies. A natural builder and tinkerer, Don was happiest with grease on his hands rather than wearing a tie, and he never turned down a cold beer shared with family and friends.

He will be deeply missed by his sisters, Barb Power of Bedford and Heather Levy of Halifax; his niece, Shauna Power (Ryan Stevens) of Salmon River; his nephew, Matthew Power (Amber) of Bedford; his great-nephews, Finn and Knox Stevens; his great-niece, Ivy Power; as well as many friends, co-workers, and cousins.

Besides his parents, Don was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Stephen Power and his beloved beagle, Ralf.

The family wishes to express their sincerest gratitude and appreciation to Don’s many friends and neighbours who stepped up in a big way to help Don during his illness. He was overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity towards him. True friends indeed!

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at 11 a.m. in Hillside United Church, 12 Flamingo Drive, Halifax, NS, with reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
