Jean Elizabeth Hamilton

Hamilton, Jean Elizabeth - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jean Elizabeth Hamilton, at the age of 93, in Enfield. The daughter of the late George and Lizzie May (Smith) Cooke, Jean was born in Moose River, N.S. She cherished this part of the country and returned often to vacation along the Fundy shore.
Jean will be sadly missed by her children, Heather Salsman, Halifax; Rebecca Colborne, Fredericton, N.B.; Robert Salsman, Truro; Mark Hamilton, Brookfield; Scott Hamilton, Toronto; and their spouses and partners. She is also mourned by nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

As well as her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Rev. Lloyd Salsman; son, Michael; second husband, Donald Hamilton; brothers, Gerald, Carl, Keith, Donald and Roy Cooke; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Jean was a faithful churchgoer and served on several United Church of Canada committees at the national level. She loved gardening, and always had a garden where she lived, whether in Tatamagouche, Truro, or Brookfield. When she wasn’t confronting her nemesis (goutweed), she could usually be found stretched out on the couch with a murder mystery, doing a New York Times crossword (in pen), or playing trivia games with her friends and family.

Jean spent her last years in The Magnolia Continuing Care Community, Enfield, where she received excellent care, often mentioning how happy she was in her later years. She died peacefully in her sleep on July 23, 2025.

A memorial service for Jean will be held in Knox United Church, Brookfield on Friday, August 8th at 2 p.m. All welcome.
