Karen "Yvonne" Kerr

Kerr, Karen “Yvonne” – 67 of Little Dyke Lake, passed away on January 7, 2026.

Yvonne was born in Bridgewater. She was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Mary (Faulkenham) Alexander, formerly of Stanley Section, near New Germany.

Yvonne retired from Canada Post in December of 2013, having worked as Postmaster of Meaghers Grant, Asssistant in Musquodoboit Harbour, Postmaster of Upper Stewiacke and finally in Upper Musquodoboit as Postmaster. Prior to this she did work terms for Employment and Immigration, DND, Transport Canada and five years with the Royal Bank of Canada.

Yvonne did not believe in “all work and no play”. She loved her social life and gathering with friends. Canada Day in New Germany with her sister “Naughty” Nancy, was a favorite time of year and holiday. It became a ritual to have the kids in the early morning children's parade and then rush back to Simpsons Corner to get ready for the grown ups parade. If Canada Day was mid week, we'd stay for the fireworks and then drive back to Meaghers Grant while the kids slept in back.

Yvonne spent the last 25 years with her Sippy Pals enjoying friendships and many gastronomical delights.

Conventions with her CPAA colleagues as a working member and volunteer led to many good times and life long friends throughout the Maritimes. Yvonne enjoyed several trips as a CPAA member visiting Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and Newfoundland at national conventions as well as many local conventions in PEI, New Brunswick and NS. She had a special place in her heart for all her Zone 3 gals, including the current Maritime Branch President Eugene and his wife, Manon. Besides Canada Day this was her second favourite time of year. She enjoyed it to the fullest when they got together.

Since moving to Little Dyke in 2020, Yvonne formed many strong bonds with the local women, being one of the founders of the Hiker Dykers, a lady’s walking club. She also created a community Facebook page to keep all of us up to date with the things going on around us. Everyone needs a village and she thought she had a great one!! One of their biggest screams and fun was their annual Witch Walk, which was celebrated with snacks and scary drinks afterwards. The group even had their Witchie faces and costumes on the Live at Five show one year. Yvonne has been an active walker and fitness person all her life. She enjoyed so much her three times weekly walks and workouts during the winter with her “village” people. In the basement of the Masstown church, they’d sweat it off and had lots of fun. The words we heard most were, “I am so sore, Deanna made us work today.”

The move from Meaghers Grant created a loss for Yvonne as she gave up the Morning Steppers class in the Community Hall, with many friends.

Yvonne and her husband, Laurin Kerr spent their entire married life in Meaghers Grant until 2020 when they moved to Little Dyke full time. Besides her husband, Yvonne is survived by her older sisters, Lynn (Wayne) Morrison, Nancy (Garnet) Veinot; and her younger brothers, David (Corrina) and James (Cheryl); daughters, Kelly (Aaron) Graham, Amherst; and Tara Kerr, Truro, who both faithfully were by their mothers side daily and nightly; grandchildren, Keenan and Cale Fraser and Luke and Jack Graham; nephews, “Magic Man” Daniel Veinot, Scott Morrison; and niece, Ryan Morrison.

As the girls were growing up, Yvonne decided to join Brownies as a co-leader and even kept it up after the girls grew older.

Her pride and joy were her grandsons, Keenan and Cale Fraser of Nine Mile River and Luke and Jack Graham of Amherst. We were lucky to live close to them and see them regularly as they grew. Yvonne did everything she could to see them all get together as much as possible. Labour Day weekends were a big family time and Easter was big in our house. Many Easter egg hunts were had with the boys. We know she would have loved one more! As the boys grew older it was trips to a local hotel and pool, with pizzas and a movie. When Yvonne turned 60, she took all her children and grandchildren to Varadero, Cuba to celebrate. Oh, the ice cream we ate, a memory forever. She even supplied matching t-shirts for us all. We will never forget her. Forever the life of the party.

Yvonne loved to travel to warm climates. Cayo Coco, Cuba was her favourite. We walked many miles on those beaches and met a lot of new and current friends. This was her way. Her husband convinced her to take three bus tours. She thought we were too young. In the end she loved the destinations and friendships. She really enjoyed our NYC adventure with friends, Margie and Barry, and Dawn and Ian.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
