Smith, Larry Austin – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Larry Austin Smith who passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, at the age of 69, surrounded by the love of his family.
Larry was born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia to Kathleen and Chesley Smith. He spent his childhood in East Wallace, moving to Truro when he was 18. Larry dedicated 44 years to Hollis Ford in many positions but was best known for his friendly smile while driving the Courtesy Shuttle. Outside of work, he enjoyed music and concerts, particularly rock, travelling, Sunday drives and cherished time spent with family and friends.
Above all else, Larry was a devoted husband, father and step-father, grandfather, brother and friend. His love, guidance, and support touched the lives of everyone who knew him.
Larry leaves behind his beloved wife, Cindy Smith; his son, Jason Smith (Sue); his stepchildren, Joe Trevors and Erin Gould; his grandchildren, Jake Smith and Leo Gould; his siblings, Jean Mills, Rockley, NS; Norman Smith (Gurli) Upper Malagash; Don Smith, Tatamagouche; Judy Brogan (Ken), Gulf Shore; Kevin Smith (Christine), Wallace Station; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.
He was predeceased by his parents, Kaye and Ches Smith; brother, Walter; sisters-in-law, Barb and Helen; and brother-in-law, Doug Mills.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of VON, the ALS Society of NS and NB, Dr. Patterson and Dr. Smith, Becky Blair, and the wonderful staff on the Palliative Care Unit at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Larry and his loved ones during his final days and years.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday July 24 from 5-9 p.m. in Truro Lions Club. In keeping with Larry’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private burial will take place.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be made to ALS Society of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
Though Larry is no longer with us, his love, laughter, strength, and the countless memories he created will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
