Spares, Lois Isabel Marie – Lois (Barbrick) Spares passed away peacefully in her own home on September 6, 2026 at age 91 after a long struggle with Vascular Dementia. Lois was born in Admiral Rock, N.S. On July 12, 1955 Lois married the love of her life, Ralph E. Spares.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Ann (Jim), Eileen (Bruce); son, Gordie; grandchildren, Michael, Matthew, Chance, Dane, Jennifer, and Michelle; Eva’s husband, Jack; along with numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Lois was predeceased by her parents, Eva (Nelson) and Dempster Barbrick; her husband of 44 years, Ralph, in 1999; daughters, Kathy in 2020 and Eva in 2026; and her four brothers, Nelson, George, Bruce, and Allen.
The church and community were paramount to Lois. She was an active member of the St. James Anglican Church, Shubenacadie most of her life, singing in the choir, leading Sunday School as Superintendent, an active member of the Ladies Guild and the Anglican Church Women (ACW), participating in talent shows and helping in the kitchen and hall for community dinners, etc. She will always be remembered for her kind and generous nature and her willingness to pitch in wherever needed.
Lois loved spending time with family and friends. She was an awesome cook enjoying being in her kitchen making delicious meals and desserts. She enjoyed camping and traveling with family and as the children grew, her and Ralph took many excursions. Later, after Ralph passed, she still traveled to visit her two daughters who lived in Ontario and Vancouver Island. Dancing was a passion of Lois’s, and she took every opportunity to do so, even during her time in her wheelchair. She so enjoyed her friend Connie Stott and all the many visits they did together ministering to others, plus the many outings they shared together. Lois loved the fun and competition of a good game of Auction 45’s with the “ladies” or a night out to one of the community centers hosting a night of 45’s. They were highlights of her week.
We want to take this time to give a special thank you to our faithful, fun, and compassionate caregivers, along with a huge thank you to Palliative Care for their knowledge, support, and wonderful care.
Memorial donations may be made in Lois’s name to Canadian Lung Association or St. James Anglican Church, Shubenacadie.
Visitation will be held September 11, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in St. James Anglican Church Hall, with the Funeral Service following at 2 p.m., in St. James Anglican Church, 2856 Highway 2, Shubenacadie. Family are invited to attend Brookside Cemetery for Mom’s burial directly after the funeral service.
