Jennex, Judith Geraldine

Jennex, Judith Geraldine – Age 71. Passed away peacefully on July 28, 2016 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital in Musquodoboit Harbour surrounded by her family. She was born in West Petpeswick, daughter of the late Harris White Anderson and Jessie May (Bayers).

She loved to gather with family at any opportunity and especially loved to spend time in the woods, fishing, golfing, bowling and also baking for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Cyril Burton Jennex; her children, Howard (Tanya) Jennex (Kayla, Malcolm, pet Sprocket), Diane (Fulton) Power (Wayne, Brian, Bradley, pet Lady), Michelle (Charles) Muise (Justin, Travis, Joey, Kelly, pets Sammy, Fader), and four great-grandchildren. She was also predeceased by brothers, Ted (Shirley) Anderson, Eric (Margie) Anderson, and sisters, Eunice (Frank) Vaughan, Eileen (Ken) Cooper, Lorianne (Murray) Sibley. She is survived by brothers, Dale Anderson, Darrel (Kay) Anderson and sisters, Edna (Herbert) Stoddard, Gloria (Manny) Baker.

There will be a family burial in East Jeddore Cemetery on Tuesday, August 2 and a gathering at her home for family and friends at 3 p.m.

Baker, Wray K.

Baker, Wray K. – Age 78, East Jeddore, passed away July 27, 2016, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Avis (Arnold); children, Sylvia (Ernie), Stanley, Michael (Donna), Wayne (Cindy), Sheila (Leo); grandchildren, Josh, Samantha, Cody, Brett, Jeff, Dylan and Monica; great-grandchildren, Chloe, Mila, Emma, and one on the way. He is also survived by sister, Helen.

He was the son of the late Evangeline (Baker) and stepson of Albert Arnold.

Wray was employed with Nova Scotia Power for 33 years.

The family would like to thank Trish and Belinda and the other Wee Care workers for all their help and support. We couldn’t have done it without you all. Also thank you to the staff in Twin Oaks Hospital.

Cremation has taken place, and burial will be at a later date. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, July 31 from 1-4 p.m. at the family home. Donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Canadian Cancer Society.

Belanger, Dorothy Elizabeth

Belanger, Dorothy Elizabeth – Age 89, Truro, passed away on July 25, 2016 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in Toronto, she was the daughter of the late William and Dorothy (Garrard) Bonham.

Surviving are her daughter, Laurie (Donald Craig) White, Hilden; grandchildren, Cindy Hill, Christopher Landsburg; great grandchildren, Jeremy, Kayla and Natalie Hill; great-great grandchild, River Archer, one niece and nephew. She was predeceased by her first husband and father of her only child, Leslie Dobbs; second husband, Hector Belanger; brother, John Bonham.

A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Truro’s First United Church Restoration Fund.

Bayers, Alida

Bayers, Alida – Age 89, East Petpeswick, passed away on July 17, 2016, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in Zutphen, Holland, she was a daughter of the late Gerrit and Aaltjen (Brands) van der Heide.

Alida came to Canada as a war bride and had many careers over her lifetime. She was a fisherman, teacher, farmer, cashier at a bakery, cook and a homemaker. In Alida’s words, “I’ve had a full life.” She was a member of First United Church and, while living in Port Elgin, sang in the choir and was a soloist.

Surviving are her children, Gary (Edith) Trenholm, Grace Vokey, Charles (Eleanor) Trenholm, Franklin (Theresa) Trenholm; stepson, Jeff Bayers, stepson-in-law, Larry Oliver; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Kenneth Trenholm; second husband, Wendell Bayers; twin daughters, Rebecca and Rachel, in infancy; granddaughter, Lona Vokey; brothers, Garrit, Oeds, Carl and Johan; stepdaughter, Wendy Oliver.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in First United Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Rev. Iain Macdonald officiating. Burial will be in Bayers Settlement Cemetery. Memorial donations to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia would be appreciated.

Guild, Myrtle Josephine

Guild, Myrtle Josephine – Age 84, Middle Musquodoboit, passed away July 14, 2016, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Stewiacke, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred and Jessie (Elliott) Smith.

Myrtle was always active in the community and volunteered regularly at Braeside Nursing Home where she called bingo and sang in the Monday choir. She was a member of Middleton United Church where she was part of the UCW and church choir.

Surviving are her daughters, Patsy (Brian) Leslie, Dartmouth; Robin (Benny) Hutchinson, Elmsvale; sisters, Shirley MacLellan, Milford; Marilyn Smith, Stewiacke; brothers, Russell (Audree), Milford; Paul, Truro; Gary (Judy), Stewiacke; sisters-in-law, Judy, Stewiacke East; Fran, Stewiacke; Muriel, Brookfield; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald; brothers, Stan, Havey, Emmerson, Larry, Wilfred and Michael; brother-in-law, Frank MacLellan; sisters-in-law, Helen, Janine, Melissa.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, July 19, at 2 p.m. in Middleton United Church, Middle Musquodoboit, Rev. Dr. Linda Yates officiating. Burial to follow in Pioneer Cemetery, Middle Musquodoboit. Friends are welcome to a reception downstairs in the church following the burial. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation – Hospital or Braeside Nursing Home.

Power, Leslie Francis “Les”

Power, Leslie Francis “Les” – It is with profound sadness that we announce that Leslie Francis "Les" Power passed away peacefully on July 11, 2016, in Oakwood Terrace Nursing Home after a long illness. Born in Halifax on March 9, 1925, he was the last of ten children born to the late Leslie T. and Emma (White) Power.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Marie (Blackburn) in 1993; his second wife, Helen (Josey) White Power in 2001; and siblings, Cyril, Ralph, Edward, Sedley, Dorothea, Eileen, Mildred, Gertrude and Shirley. He is survived by sons, Stephen (Barbara), Halifax; Richard, London, Ont.; grandchildren, Shauna Power (Ryan Stevens), Truro; Matthew Power (Amber Quartermain), Bedford; and great-grandson, Finn Stevens.

Les retired in 1982 from the Halifax Fire Department and was very proud of his 36-year career as a firefighter/first responder. Les was a kind and gentle man who always had a smile on his face and story ready for the telling (usually of the "tall tale" variety). He had the amazing ability to coax a smile out of just about everybody. He will be especially missed by his son Stephen with whom he shared a special bond.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Dad's wishes, there will be no funeral. A reception will be held in his memory on Sunday, July 17 in Knights of Columbus Hall, 252 Cobequid Rd., Lower Sackville from 6-8:30 p.m. A graveside committal service will be held Monday, July 18 at 10 a.m. in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oakwood Terrace or a charity of your choice.

Deyarmond, Lester Richard “Dick”

Deyarmond, Lester Richard “Dick” – Age 77 of Stewiacke East, passed away July 8, 2016, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Upper Stewiacke, he was a son of the late Raymond and Isabel (Power) Deyarmond.

Dick served overseas on peacekeeping duty in Germany and Cyprus, returning to Petawawa, Ont. for some time. He moved back to Nova Scotia and, for a brief time, worked for Mosher Limestone before beginning a career with Nova Scotia Liquor Commission. Following his retirement, Dick was out in the community socializing and playing cards at every opportunity.

Surviving are his son, Douglas (Sheila); grandson, Justin; sister, Carmitta Kennedy; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Myrna Graham; sister, Betty Graham; brothers, Bill, and Stewart in infancy.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday, 7-9 p.m., and funeral service will be Thursday at 2 p.m., both in Sharon United Church, Stewiacke East, with Rev. Natalie Buchanan-Rutherford officiating. Burial to follow in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or Sharon United Church.

Caldwell (Wright, Higgins), Clara Lillian

Caldwell (Wright, Higgins), Clara Lillian – Of Hilden. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, on June 30, 2016, in her 94th year.

She was predeceased by her parents, Burton and Edna (Fisher) Wright; two children in infancy; husbands, Oscar Higgins, (Meadowvale); and Keith Caldwell, (Port Alberni/Victoria, B.C.); son, Gary Higgins; daughter-in-law, Donna; granddaughter, Wanda (all of Victoria); siblings, Melvin, Shirley, Evelyn, Marguerite and Helen. Surviving are siblings, Lena, Kingston, Ont.; Lloyd, Brookfield; Eric (Trudy), Appleton, Nfld., and Wayne (Elaine), Riverview, N.B. She is remembered by her son, Lester (Ada) Higgins, Middle Stewiacke; daughters, Jean (Paul) Hicks, Fredericton; Faye Higgins, Hilden; grandchildren, Vincent Higgins, Pembroke, Ont.; Susan Higgins, Middle Stewiacke; Cecil Higgins, Victoria, B.C.; Wade Higgins, Parksville, B.C.; Jason (Janice) Hicks, Fredericton; Darren (Crystal) Hicks, Fredericton; and her many great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and their families. She will also be greatly missed by her card-playing pals.

Clara resided in two provinces. She had been an active member of the United Church, and in Victoria, worked tirelessly as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, golfing and visiting. Her last two years were spent living in Truro in Cedarstone Enhanced Living, where the nurses always knew that Clara would be outdoors walking and enjoying the weather, if they couldn't find her in her room. Her family wishes to thank the staff for their courtesy, cheerfulness and helpfulness to Clara, and to us, during this period of her life, and for making her last home a pleasant experience. Gratitude from her family to Dr. Chris Cook for his kind attendance over her.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, at 2 p.m. in Hilden United Church, Hilden, with Keith Selwyn-Smith officiating, followed by a reception. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hilden United Church or Cedarstone Resident Council, Purdy Lane. A private family interment will be held in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke.
