Young, Glenna Marie

Young, Glenna Marie – Age 72, Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away peacefully on January 19, 2016, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Born in West Petpeswick, she was a daughter of the late Franklyn and Maud (Gaetz) Young. Glenna is survived by her brothers, Arthur, West Petpeswick; Robert (Isobel), Lawrencetown; Richard (Ann), Porters Lake; Garth, West Petpeswick; Murray (Marj), Dartmouth; Raymond (Carol), Alberta; Owen (Theresa), East Chezzetcook; Bruce (Gloria), Dartmouth; many, many nieces and nephews she cared very deeply for. She was predeceased by her siblings, Joan, Joseph, Maurice, Edna, James and Gerald.

Glenna lost her sight in 2006. She overcame this complication to live a full and joyful life in Chezzetcook and Forest Glen’s apartments in East Petpeswick, where she made many friends with whom she loved to play cards and share a tidbit of gossip or two.

Cremation has taken place. A Mass of Christian Life will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Father Fabian Ihunego officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. Family interment will be at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital or West Petpeswick Cemetery.

The family would like to thank all the staff of Twin Oaks, Dartmouth General and Victoria General Hospitals for their great care and gentleness, as well as all Glenna’s home support workers who came over the years – your care made it possible for Glenna to live an independent life with family and friends.

Wellwood, Mary Katherine

Wellwood, Mary Katherine – Age 94, Lower Truro, passed away peacefully January 19, 2016 in Vimy Court Nursing Home, Bible Hill. Born in Caribou, Pictou Co., she was a daughter of the late J. Anderson and Anna (McCarthy) Harris (Caribou). Mary lived across the breadth of Canada and returned to settle in Truro in 1967. She was known locally as a woman of many talents and much generosity. Her interests were many and she enjoyed them: welding, baking, cooking, providing home care for others, blacksmithing, cake decorating, ceramics, pottery, rug hooking, animal husbandry, soap making and tending to her family. Those who knew Mary knew she enjoyed gardening with Stan and feeding her neighbours. She was a charter member of the Cobequid Firemanettes, and attended and taught at her church.

Mary will be missed and always loved by her sisters, Jean Rae and Josephine Somerville; her children, Jim (Phyllis) Harris, Bridgewater; Allan (Natalie) Wellwood, Truro; Collin Wellwood, Abbotsford, B.C.; Estelle (Ken) Nix, Grand Forks, B.C.; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her grandson, Christopher Harris; her granddaughter, Melissa Kleinsasser; sister, Estelle Wilson; brother-in-law, Stan Wilson; brothers, Murray and Roddie.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Truro Seventh Day Adventist Church, 32 Wynn Road, Pastor David Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in Robie Street Cemetery at a later date. Logan, Orrie Mitchell

Logan, Orrie Mitchell – Age 75 of Dutch Settlement. With great sadness, we, the family, announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather on January 16, 2016. Born in Dutch Settlement, he was a son of the late James Mitchell and Amy Edith (Isenor) Logan. Over the years, Orrie had many different jobs, but only one career. He loved trucking and he owned and operated Logan Trucking Limited for the past 36 years. He enjoyed stock car racing, along with his trip to Newfoundland moose hunting, hunting at the camp with his brother-in-law, Russ, and nephews, Whitney and Joe. He enjoyed working on his trucks, going to the Nine Mile River dances, and hanging out with friends and family.

He will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Elizabeth (Higgins); daughters, Nancy (Bryden Ashley), Tamara (Lindsay) Veniot; grandchildren who he adored very much, Jessie (Devin), Katie (Colton), James, Alyssa (Chris); and his very special great-grandson, Anthony Orrie; sister, Inez (Lester) Isenor; brother, Ivan (Wilma); mother-in-law, Esther Higgins; numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Calvin, Hiram, Aubrey; sisters, Greta, Marion, Golda, Millicent; father-in-law, Russell Higgins, beloved nephew, Cpl. Thomas Hamilton.

van de Riet, Maria Elisa Agnes

van de Riet, Maria Elisa Agnes – Shubenacadie. 1937-2016. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Maria Elisa Agnes, on January 14, 2016 at her home in Shubenacadie, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Roosendaal, Netherlands, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Emma (Hontele) Schepers. In 1959, she immigrated to Nova Scotia with her husband, Chris, and their seven-week-old son. They purchased a dairy farm in Shubenacadie in 1964, where they raised their family and lived until their retirement in 1989. Maria was a long-time active member of St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church. Her passions included travelling, music, gardening, puzzling and most of all, spending time with her extended family. She always put her family first, except when it came to family card tournaments with a trophy up for grabs! Maria was self taught in English and could complete crossword puzzles in both English and Dutch. She will be sadly missed by her many long-time friends. Kindness and unconditional love are her greatest legacy.

She was predeceased by Chris, her loving husband of 38 years, in 1996 and is survived by her son, Chretien (Alberta) van de Riet, Shubenacadie; daughters, Betty (Sean) Donahue, Williams Lake, B.C.; Dr. Margot (Bob) Rudstrom, East Grand Forks, Minn.; and Alma (Mike) Harlow, Porters Lake; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Austin, Kristine (Sheldon) Larkin, Amy (Tyler), Carter, Erin and Karl Rudstrom, Brigitte and Monica Harlow; great-grandchildren, John, Brooke, Finley, David and Vander. She is also survived by her family in the Netherlands; brother, Paul (Guusje); sisters, Jeanette (Kees), Alma, Adrienne (Jan); sister-in-law, Elly; and brother-in-law, Joop. She was predeceased by her brother, Ad; and her sister, Lidwina.

A funeral mass will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Bridget’s Roman Catholic Church, Shubenacadie, Father Joseph Thomas officiating. A reception will follow downstairs in Campbell Hall. Burial will take place at a later date.

McLellan, Judith Mary

McLellan, Judith Mary – Age 69, Shubenacadie East, passed away suddenly on January 10, 2016. Born in Cheverie, she was a daughter of Donald Arthur Ross and the late Joyce Marie (Weatherbee) Ross. Judy loved music, crafts, sheltering animals, and she adored her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Edward; father, Donald; brother, Glenn, both of Cheverie; son, Trevor Harvey (Cheryl), Elmsdale; daughter, Charlene Harvey, New Brunswick; grandchildren, Logan Harvey-Shannon, Cassandra Stephens-Harvey; stepsons, Dwayne, Shubenacadie; Kevin, Philadelphia; sister-in-law, Leona Ross, Gore; nephew, David (Kim), Halifax. She was predeceased by her mother, Joyce; brother, Donald.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in Shubenacadie United Church, Rev. Martin Reid officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to The Lung Association Nova Scotia.

Noble (White), Linden Mae “Lindy”

Noble (White), Linden Mae “Lindy” – Age 74, Nine Mile River. It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Lindy, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, on January 9, 2016, with her family by her side. Born in Noel Road, she was a daughter of the late Marsden and Ada White. Lindy is survived by her loving husband, of 53 years, Albert; daughter, Colleen and son-in-law, Bert; grandchildren, Courtney, Ashley and Bradley (Miranda), who were her pride and joy. Also surviving are sisters, Myrt, Barb (Aub), Gaylene; brother, Lance (Cece); in-laws, Darlene, Sarah, and Bev. She was predeceased by siblings, Rollie and Shelia; brothers-in-law, Eric and Dave.

Lindy was a member of Nine Mile River United Church, where she served as Sunday school superintendent. She was also a member of Nine Mile River Ladies Auxiliary for over 45 years, and an active member of Nine Mile River Community Centre. She was an avid bingo player, and enjoyed weekly games at Nine Mile River and Enfield, where she shared many laughs with her friends. Lindy spent many weekends at the trailer, where she was a member of Avon Boat Club. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, puzzles, and shopping, especially her trips to the States.

Visitation will be Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., and funeral service will be Wednesday, at 2 p.m., both in Nine Mile River United Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Nine Mile River United Church or Sand Hill Cemetery. The family will meet friends in Nine Mile River Community Centre following the service.

Price, Elroy Stewart

Price, Elroy Stewart – Age 75, of Dean, passed away January 10, 2016 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro. Born in Newton Mills, he was a son of the late Stanley and Annie (Ross) Price. Elroy was a hard worker who was employed with a number of local woods contractors. He enjoyed fishing, watching most any sport on TV, the daily puzzles in the newspaper, and having his dog, Snoopy, around.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be sadly missed by daughters, Debbie Price, Truro; Karen Price (Charles), Latties Brook; grandchildren, Cassandra, Jaclyn, Justin, Mitchell, Courtney, Shane and Jordan; siblings, Shirley Melanson, Bernie (Bonnie), Stephen, Susan (John) Withrow, Sandra Pate; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Betty Lemmon; brothers, Richard, Dexter.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m., both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Lemmon Hill Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of choice.

McCluskey, Bernard Daniel – Age 89, Middle Musquodoboit, passed away January 8, 2016. In keeping with Bernard’s request, there will be no service.

Greenough, Doreen Theresa

Greenough, Doreen Theresa – Age 83, Upper Musquodoboit and formerly of Windsor Junction, passed away January 7, 2016, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Kentville, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Bertha (Ashe) Arnold. She will always be loved and missed by her daughter, Robynlyn (Rick) Andrews, Upper Musquodoboit; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Gerald (Fran), Windsor Junction. Doreen was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; sons, Steven, Michael; siblings, Bradford, Joseph, Kathleen, Bertha (in infancy).

Cremation has taken place. A family committal service will be held in Dean Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Musquodoboit Valley Health Foundation – Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit, NS B0N 1X0.

Higgins, Gordon Ernest

Higgins, Gordon Ernest – Age 92, Higginsville, passed away December 21, 2015 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit, with his family by his side. Born June 24, 1923 in Lindsay Lake, he was a son of the late Norman and Rella Mae (Miller) Higgins. Gordon attended Lindsay Lake School and later was a veteran of World War II, serving with the North Shore (New Brunswick) Regiment - Infantry from 1942 until 1946. He was a veteran of the Liberation of Holland and D-Day. Although he rarely spoke of them, his war experiences greatly influenced him the rest of his life. After returning home, he worked as a heavy equipment operator and then as a stationary engineer at Bedford Institute of Oceanography. He also served in the Commissionaires for a period of time.

Family was important to Gordon. He was a kind and gentle man who loved to tell stories. He enjoyed woodworking, vegetable gardening and nature, especially watching birds at the feeders. He could fix anything, even if he had to “rig” something up. He was adored by all his grandchildren, and they tell “Grampie” stories, as well.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen (Archibald) Higgins; daughters, Wendy (Don) Himelman, Prince Edward Island; Dawn (Gerry) Doyle, Lower Sackville; Jeanne and Melanie, Higginsville; grandchildren, Jeff (Jocelyne) Himelman, Sarah (Edward) Puxley, Laura (Jason) Leclair, all of Prince Edward Island; Jason (Stacy) Doyle, the Netherlands; great-grandchildren, Cassie Henderson; Kian and Ruari Doyle; sister, Daisy Scott, Truro; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings, Morris, Augustus, Seldon, Emma Carver, Linley, in infancy.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. At Gordon's request, there will be no funeral at this time. A graveside service will be held in the summer of 2016 in Higginsville Cemetery.

Taylor, John Hugh

Taylor, John Hugh – Age 91, Middle Stewiacke, passed away peacefully at home, on December 26, 2015, with Tina and AJ by his side. Born in Middle Stewiacke, he was a son of the late George and Henrietta (Fulton) Taylor. John was an exceptional man and a great neighbour. His generosity and humour will be missed by many.

Surviving are his extended family, Tina and AJ O’Connell; sister-in-law, Pearl Taylor; many nieces and nephews and their families. He was predeceased by long-time companion, Lena O’Connell. The last surviving member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by sisters, Margaret Miller, Ethel Davidson, Anna Taylor; brothers, Douglas, Rupert, Byard, Arnold.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Middle Stewiacke United Church, Rev. Keith Gale officiating. Burial will be in Middle Stewiacke Cemetery. The family will meet friends for a reception downstairs in the church following the burial. In lieu of flowers, donations to Middle Stewiacke United Church would be appreciated.

Earl Robert Corkum

Corkum, Earl Robert- age 84 of Enfield passed away peacefully with his family at home on December 30th, 2015.  A husband, a father, grandfather, brother and friend was born in Brooklyn, Queens County in 1931.

As a young boy and into his teens he worked on the family farm and fished with his father, Steadman. As a teenager he moved to Halifax to work and it was there that he met the love of his life Lorraine (Muise) Corkum. Five years later in 1954, they were married at Saint Bernard’s Church in Enfield then settled into married life in Oldham where they raised one son and four daughters.

 Earl was never too busy to talk. He was the kind of person that would not hesitate to give you the shirt off his back. He was a no frills kind of guy and enjoyed the simple things in life. He had a very calm demeanor. Some would even say he had the patience of a saint. 

Earl worked hard for 36 years driving an oil truck, keeping everyone fueled up with heating oil! He had an incredible work ethic. His work day was never over until the job was done.

 When he retired, his favorite pastime was collecting recyclables and hanging out with the gang at Tim Hortons.

 For the last 15 years Earl lived with COPD and through all the ups and downs Earl still had a positive outlook on life and quite the sense of humor. When you asked him how you are doing he would usually say, “I am only going to live till I die”. In the past few years Earl found comfort in developing a personal relationship with God.

 In Earl’s final days and hours, it wasn’t the stuff that he did or collected that was important to him. What was important to him was to tell everyone how much he loved them especially his wife, his children and his grandchildren.  

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; son, Bob (Noreen); daughters, Donna Fraser, Shelly O’Neil (Kevin), Terry Lee Brooking (Tony) and Cheryl Corkum (Russell); Grandchildren, Steven, Natacha, David, Amanda, Scott, Pat, Shane, Al, and Karley; great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Geneviève, Emma, Rhyley, Carmen, Kaitlyn, Jonathan, Alex and Jaxson; along with Earl’s sister, Geneverah Benoit (Nebbie).

A special thank you to his granddaughter, Natacha, and to all of the VON and palliative care staff who cared for him. A special thank you to his Church family at Elmsdale Baptist Church for the love and support they gave him.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at Elmsdale Baptist Church,  Saturday January 2, 2016 at 2pm.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit and a private burial will be held at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, donations to the NS Lung Association would be greatly appreciated.

Ellis, Ronald Robert

Ellis, Ronald Robert – Age 81, of Hilden and formerly of Eastville, Upper Stewiacke, passed away December 19, 2015 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born September 15, 1934 in Eastville, he was a son of the late Alvin and Lyle (McCoul) Ellis. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Noreen (Anthony); daughter, Beth; son, Randy (Crista); grandsons, Dillon and Andrew; sisters, Irene Deyarmond, Marion Cox, Shirley (Bruce) Fleming; sisters-in-law, Frances Ellis (Garnet Dickie), Iris Anthony; brothers-in-law, Benny Ouelette, Victor Squires; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother, Alex; sisters Eva and Anna; sisters-in-law, Carol “Toni” (Anthony) Squires; brother-in-law, Muir “Reg” Anthony.

Ron began his working career at the age of 16 in the West. Upon returning home to Nova Scotia, he worked for E.B. Hill of Truro, then Colchester-East Hants School Board as a bus driver until his retirement. He enjoyed many years of camping with family, making many friends at Brule Beach, Seafoam, Seaside and D&B Campgrounds. He spent over 65 years with the Upper Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Department and remained an honourary member until his death.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life, including a Firemen’s service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Upper Stewiacke Fire Hall, followed by a reception. Burial will be in Eastville Cemetery. No flowers by request. Donations may be made to a charity of choice.

MacLeod, David “Brian”

MacLeod, David “Brian” – Age 56, Salmon River, passed away on December 19, 2015, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by his family. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Victor and Jean (MacLanders) MacLeod. Brian had overcome many challenges in his life, and all who knew him knew what an inspiration he was. He travelled and participated in 100 golf tournaments throughout the world. In the blind golf community he was highly ranked, even achieving a hole-in-one, and was known as the one to beat. He was an avid competitor in many sports, with or without his sight. He will be missed every day by his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne (Perrin); daughter, Sarah (Michael Sullivan); brothers, Allan, Doug, James (Terry), and their families.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. in St. James Presbyterian Church, Truro, Rev. Dr. David Sutherland officiating, assisted by Rev. Dr. P.A. McDonald. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Prest, Sidney Wilson

Prest, Sidney Wilson – 1943-2015. Sidney Wilson Prest, 72, a lifelong resident of Mooseland, has parted this worldly earth on December 14, 2015, to join his parents, Boyd Embree and Alice Marie Prest; and siblings who have departed before him, Margaret, Fraser, Marcheta, Burham and Murray; brothers-in-law, Jack Brown and Robin Smallwood; and sister-in-law, Gladys. To carry on his legacy of family values, hard work, and vision, he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nancy (Myers); his children, Dawn Marie Lowe (Rob), Dwayne (Tena), Deanna McCullum (Derek); his dear grandchildren who he so loved to visit regularly, Zachary, Sydney, Madison, Monica, Cameron, Marissa, and Mary-Beth. His remaining siblings are Madonna Brown, Donis Prest (Leo Casavechia), Sterling (Valerie), Dougal (Elizabeth); sisters-in-law, Ola, Marilyn; brother-in-law, Henry Decker.

Sid began his working life as a young teenager. His first job was driving a truck. His most recent job was as Member of Legislative Assembly for The Province of Nova Scotia from 2009-2013 to which he dedicated his passion for his community, development of business, and preservation of our natural resources. In between these jobs, he was self-employed in the forestry business, and then as a By-Law Enforcement Officer for Halifax Regional Municipality and in various political roles.

In his spare time he always had a woodpile in some stage of processing, he was always on the look for “good stock” for his garage, he worked on his own vehicles, always had some type of project on the go and thinking about the next one. He thoroughly enjoyed when everyone was home to visit and sitting down to a family meal to celebrate none other than just having us all together. Evenings were enjoyed with a game of cards, talking to his children and grandchildren on the phone, or social functions, especially dances with Nancy. He had many blessings in life, the greatest of which was his family.

Visitation will be in the family home, 4005 Mooseland Rd., 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, Wednesday. Funeral service will be Thursday, at 2 p.m. in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Mooseland. Reception to follow in Mooseland Community Hall. Memorial donation may be made to Otter Ponds Demonstration Forest or Mooseland Community Association.

Fraser, Vera Hazel

Fraser, Vera Hazel – Age 91, Higginsville, passed away December 11, 2015 in Braeside Home for Special Care, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Newcomb Corner, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Dora (Henley) Miller. Vera enjoyed knitting, quilting and crocheting. She and her husband, Lorne, were foster parents of many children.

Surviving are sons, Robert (Corinne), Timmy; daughters, Thelma (Ronald) Stewart, Lorna (Chris) Roebotham, Anita Seaman (Austin Darragh), Blanche (Francis) Lemmon; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; sister, Bessie Lake; brothers, Basil (Lola), Lester. She was predeceased by husband, Lorne; brothers, Harrison, Sidney, Bruce, Arthur; sisters, Mae, Amy, Gertie, Rose.

Funeral service will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Higginsville United Church, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Higginsville Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Higginsville Cemetery or a charity of choice.

Cox, James “Colin”

Cox, James “Colin” – Age 80, South Branch, passed away December 10, 2015, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in South Branch, he was the son of the late Byron and Marie (Geddes) Cox. Colin successfully ran J. Colin Cox Trucking for 40 years, along with the help of his wife and three sons. He was an active community worker supporting many projects. Colin had been a member of Upper Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years. He was affectionately known as the Mayor of South Branch. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the trips to his camp with the guys.

Surviving are the love of his life, his wife of 58 years, Frances (Peterson); children, Terry (Wendy), Dale, Laurie “Red” (Louise), all of South Branch; Donna (Mark) MacCallum, Truro; Colleen Johnson, Hilden; grandchildren, Jonathan and Justin Cox, Natalie, Shanda and Katelyn Cox, Michael and Mitchell Campbell, Colton and Devin Cox and Melissa and AJ Johnson; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Ferne McGillivray, South Branch; Karen (Jack) Oldford, Langley, B.C. He was predeceased by brother-in-law, Hughie McGillivray.

A family graveside service will be held on Saturday, at 11 a.m., in South Branch Cemetery, with Rev. Marilyn MacDonald officiating. No flowers by request. If desired, memorial donations may be made to South Branch Cemetery Corporation.

Stewart, Leslie Frederick “Les”

Stewart, Leslie Frederick “Les” – Passed away at home in Halifax on December 7, 2015, at the age of 84. He lived a very joyful life, touching many people with his kindness, smile, and gentle humour. Born in Elmsvale, Musquodoboit, Les was the youngest child of Edmond Arnold Stewart and Ethel McKeen (Reid). After completing grade 12 at Truro Academy, Les taught in a one-room school in Elmsvale. He received a scholarship to attend Dalhousie University, where he made many lifelong friends and graduated with his BComm. While at Dal, Les was co-secretary of the Student Christian Movement (SCM) and attended Royal Military College in Kingston during summers. Les’ interest in stock market investing was stimulated by a brief period working in financial services in Toronto. After developing tuberculosis, he convalesced in Muskoka and Kentville. Upon recovering, he worked with Nova Scotia Trust on Spring Garden Road.

In 1959, Les met his wife-to-be, Margaret Jean Sherry, on a double date and were married in Musquodoboit in 1962. Les then had a 29-year career with the Nova Scotia Department of Development. Two of the various positions he was most proud of involved running the Youth Entrepreneurial Skills (YES) program and working with Co-ops.

An avid fitness buff, Les swam daily and his involvement with the YMCA spanned 50 years. He enjoyed watching hockey and baseball and attended the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey series in Moscow.

Les had a big heart and was actively involved in charity work, including volunteering with youth at WoodGreen Community Centre in Toronto, fundraising for the Y and United Way, taking Valley produce and treats to Halifax shelters, and serving as a Big Brother. He was also active in his community and church, teaching Sunday school at St. Matthew’s and Rockingham United, and volunteering with Boy Scouts. A devoted Dalhousie alumnus, Les attended class reunions and established an award in his late sister Frances’ memory. A true family man, Les cherished time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, whether it be spending time together at Berwick United Church Camp or at the well-loved family cottage at Evangeline Beach.

Predeceased by siblings, Frances Lilla Stewart, Dr. John Thomas Stewart, Seymour McKeen Stewart, Jean Isabelle Albright, Shirley Margaret Carver. Les is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret (Sherry); and by his children, Sherry (Brian Stewart-Hill), Sheena (Yggy King), and Robin (Douglas Heaney); grandchildren, Amaya Stewart-Hill, Laila Stewart-Hill, Brennan King, Fiona King, Christian Hill, and Courtney James (CJ) Hill; brother and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service to be held in Rockingham United Church, 12 Flamingo Dr., at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 11th; reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund or Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation or to the Frances L. Stewart Prize in Psychology through Dalhousie. Guyette, Mary Theresa Jacqueline “Jackie”

Guyette, Mary Theresa Jacqueline “Jackie” – Age 86, Elmsdale, died peacefully on November 29, 2015 at home. Born in River Bourgeois, she was a daughter of the late John Charles “Henry” and the late Margaret Mary (Landry) Pottie. A long-time educator and active community volunteer, Jackie gave generously of her time and talent to many worthy organizations. Her door was always open to those in need.

Surviving are her husband of 61 years, Leo; children, Kim (Doug), Leo (Wendy), Claire (Peter), Michael (Cathy), Rosemary (Dick), Dawn (David), Trish (Jack); 18 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; brothers, Lloyd, Ross; sisters, Vivian, Ann; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sister, Judy; son-in-law, Sherman.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Enfield, Father Michael Walsh officiating. A reception will follow. Interment will be in St. Bernard’s Parish Columbarium. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, Chalice Canada or a charity of choice.

Brown, H. Russell

Brown, H. Russell – Age 77, of Shubenacadie. It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Russell, on November 20, 2015, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in North Salem, he was a son of the late Howard and Sadie (Parker) Brown. In his early years, Russell worked in lumber camps, was a truck driver, and also worked at Orie Kerr’s sawmill. In 1966, Russell went to work as a school bus driver for Hants East, and later with Chignecto Central Regional School Board where he worked for 31 years, retiring in 1997. Russell was known for his love of talking, telling stories, and he always loved a good joke. He loved the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing cards, and Percheron horses.

Surviving are his wife, the former Sandra Sproutt; son, Terry (Holly), Belmont; daughters, Debbie (Rick) Anthony, Shubenacadie; Connie (Jamie) Hiltz, Dutch Settlement; brother, Kenneth (Carrie), Brookfield; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by son, Howard; granddaughter, Courtney; brothers, Roy, Cecil, Wilfred; sisters, Lillian and Rita in infancy.

No visitation by request. In keeping with Russell’s wishes, his body has been donated to Dalhousie Research. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in St. James Anglican Church, Shubenacadie, Rev. Canon David Fletcher officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
