Elizabeth Joan (Johnson) Murray - Funeral

Murray (Johnson), Elizabeth Joan – Age 86 of Truro. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Elizabeth Joan (Johnson) Murray on Sunday, February 10, 2019, in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro.

Born in Middleton to the late J. Myron and Lilian (Henry) Johnson, Elizabeth was educated in Wolfville and Truro, at Acadia University and Provincial Normal College. Following graduation she taught grade primary in Kentville and at Alexandra School in Halifax. She thoroughly enjoyed teaching this age group and took great delight in putting on plays and rhythm band concerts with them.

While in Halifax she met and married Rev. Don Murray and actively supported his ministry in the United Church pastoral charges of Tabusintac and Edmundston, N.B., and Stewiacke, Tatamagouche and New Glasgow. She organized many events to aid in the financial support of these charges.

It was always her intention to have a large family and so it is not surprising that she claimed her greatest accomplishments were her five children. Her expectations were high but her encouragement always brought out the best in them.

She enjoyed many activities and was always very busy and involved as a mother, church member and community member, attending and leading several church camps and CGIT, and participating in Home and School Associations, Band Auxiliaries, and the New Glasgow Music Festival. She was a member and past elder of Brunswick Street United Church in Truro, and a life member of the UCW.  Elizabeth was a crusader and a staunch supporter of the NDP.  She frequently expressed her views to all levels of government and in newspapers on issues including anti-smoking laws and the banning of VLTs. By far, her favourite pastime was reading the newspaper(s), particularly the Chronicle Herald, which she did from age 15. She was famous for her clippings!

She enjoyed playing the piano, especially with family at Christmas, skating and playing cards as a very vocal participant in countless of games of 45s. But perhaps her greatest pleasure was dancing, which to her delight she was able to do into her 80s, despite complications from her broken hip.   

She loved to throw parties, especially for herself, and relished in surprising friends and family. She enjoyed baking bread and her famous pies, picnics, showing off her children's accomplishments, listening to the CBC, and eating fudge and chocolate. 

Surviving Elizabeth are her children, Deborah (Sandi Howell), Winnipeg; Patricia, Halifax; Joan (Stuart Smith), Summerside; John (Paula Abarca del Rio) Vienna, Austria; Donald, Toronto; grandchildren, Anna and Aidan Smith, Sean and Ian Murray Abarca; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members; many friends and faithful visitors. Elizabeth was predeceased by infant brothers, Arthur Myron and Ross Brian; and her companion in later years, Gordon Poole.  

We would like to thank the staff of East Cumberland Lodge and Cedarstone Enhanced Care for the wonderful care they provided Elizabeth during her six month stay in each facility. We, also, so appreciate Janet and Chrissy Ward for their devotion and care during the latter years of her life.

Cremation has taken place. Elizabeth did not want her passing to be sad, so memories and stories are welcome at the visitation on Wednesday, March 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. A celebration of her life will be Thursday, March 14 at 2 p.m., both in Brunswick Street United Church, Truro. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Brunswick Street United Church.

Gordon Joseph Wregget

Wregget, Gordon Joseph – Age 88 of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on March 13, 2019 in St. Vincent’s Nursing Home, Halifax. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Gord served in the Royal Canadian Air Force for 33 years, retiring as a Warrant Officer (R) CD2.

Gord’s military career took him to Europe where he travelled extensively with his family. In later years, he and Helen enjoyed travelling with their combined families as well as on their own, creating wonderful memories for everyone.

He was an avid sportsman who enjoyed swimming, playing hockey and riding his bike. When he finally packed his sporting goods away, he methodically mastered a virtual flight simulator program on his laptop, flying into many nearby towns and cities. The question was always, “where have you been today, Gord”? And he usually responded with “Charlottetown” or “Greenwood”.

Gord is survived by his wife, Helen Wallace-Wregget, sons, David (Patricia), Mississauga, Ont., Kenneth (Nicole), Pittsburgh, PA; stepchildren, Joanne Reid, J. Dana Wallace, Janet (Dan) Hamilton, all of Dartmouth; Jacqueline Wallace, Shubenacadie; grandchildren, Matthew, Courtney and Paige Wregget, Emma Dickie (Jonathan Young), Moira Dickie, Sarah Reid, J. Dylan, Noah and Joely Wallace; great-granddaughter, Sylvia Dickie-Young; sister-in-law, Karen Wregget; niece Linda (David) Hartley; nephew, Keith Wregget. Gord was predeceased by his first wife, Georgette; brothers, Mervin, Lawrence, Donald; parents, Myrtle and Claude Wregget.

Cremation has taken place. As per Gord’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Interment will take place at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Parkinson Canada.

We want to thank the fifth floor staff of St. Vincent’s Nursing Home for their compassion and respect in caring for Gord.

Colleen Anne Hasler

Hasler, Colleen Anne – We, the family of Colleen Anne Hasler, are saddened to announce her passing in the VG Site, QEII, Halifax on March 13, 2019 at 7:35 p.m. Born in Halifax, July 12, 1952, she was the eldest child of David and Loraine (Graves), Halifax. She grew up in Leiblin Park, Spryfield and was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

She was predeceased by her father, David; and is survived by her mother, Loraine; and siblings, David (Paula), Maureen (Larry) Smith, Michael (Mary Margaret), Mary, Susan, Dan (Tracey), Christa (Wayne) Ryan, Bill, Maria (Sean) McDonald; and a great many nieces and nephews.

Colleen worked for APSEA (School for the Blind) for most of her career, a job she dearly loved. She was then employed by the Halifax Regional School Board, as well as Metro Community Housing Authority. Having the great fortune of many friends she dearly loved them all; they were treasures to her. Her greatest love however was her God, who was her everything. She was a founding member of “The Day” music ministry which served the Atlantic Charismatic Conferences and was blessed to minister for Pope John Paul II on his visit to Halifax. She served on many resource ministries in the church and renewal. In her great love of scripture and contemplation she became a long-time friend and visitor of Notre Dame du Calvarie Abbey, Rogersville, N.B. She served in various ministries within the church, most notably as a lector. Her deep Catholic faith bore the fruit of loving kindness, and with her infectious laughter she drew many wounded souls to a closer relationship with her Savior Jesus Christ. She was a true and faithful friend to all.

We will wake Colleen at a visitation to take place in the basement of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, 6 St. Michael’s Ave., Spryfield, Sunday, March 17th, from 3-7 p.m. All welcome. The funeral mass will be held the following day in St. Michael’s Church, Monday, March 18th, at 2 p.m. Celebrant, Father Ronald Cairns, ConCelebrant, Father David, Deacon David Hasler.

Mildred Patricia Shea

Shea, Mildred Patricia – Age 91 of Cooks Brook, passed away peacefully March 10, 2019 in Dartmouth General Hospital with family by her side. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late William and Victoria Beazley.

Surviving are her daughters, Gail (Glenn) Parmenter, Ottawa; Susan (Darrell) Murphy, Cooks Brook; sons, Rod (Sharon), Carleton Place, Ont.; Bill (Belinda), Louisdale; Pat (Sharon), Stittsville, Ont.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Murray; precious daughter, Kathleen; dear grandson, Eric; brother, George.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Mildred’s life will be held at a later date in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Middle Musquodoboit. The interment of ashes will take place in Strathlorne Cemetery, Cape Breton, next to her family. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Anna Hellen Crawford

Crawford, Anna Hellen – Age 62, Dartmouth, passed away March 7, 2019 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Musquodoboit Harbour, she was a daughter of the late William and Eileen (Omelia) Gale.

Surviving are her husband, Roger; and three siblings. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by four siblings.

Samantha Wilma Mae Wallace-Parker

Wallace-Parker, Samantha Wilma Mae – Age 28 of Truro, passed away March 4, 2019 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by family.

Samantha had a big heart and loved her children more than anything in the world.

Norman Clyde Weatherhead

Weatherhead, Norman Clyde – Age 68 of Rawdon Gold Mines. Norm passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s. Born in Rawdon Gold Mines, he was a son of the late Clyde and Gertie (Bond) Weatherhead.  

He will be forever loved and remembered by his wife and best friend, Valerie (Fenton); sons, Todd (Lana), Rawdon Gold Mines; and Corey, Lower Sackville. He is also survived by sisters, Ellen (Richard) Mitchell, Delta, B.C.; Margie Hunter, Brookside; Phyllis (Ron) Hildenbrand, Calgary, Alta.; Judy (Rennie) White, Ruth (Ron) Power, both of Rawdon Gold Mines; Rae (Greg) Miller, Marmora, Ont.; Lynne (Victor) Harlow, Bridgewater; Donna Christianson, Dartmouth; sisters-in-law, Kaye Weatherhead, Rawdon Gold Mines; Karen (Scott) Newman,  Smithville, Ont.; brothers-in-law, Kevin (Lynda) Fenton, Amherst; James (Verna) Fenton, Upper Kennetcook; Mitchell (Rhonda) Fenton, Bridgewater; mother-in-law, Lill Fenton, Falmouth; nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Norm was predeceased by brother, Russell; sister, Eileen; brothers-in-law, Arthur Ward, Jack Hunter; father-in-law, Ken Fenton.

Norm enjoyed a career operating heavy equipment and trucking. He worked at different companies through the years, including Department of Transportation and Ocean Contractors. The highlight of his career was working in his home community at Weatherhead Trucking, a business he co-owned with his brother. Although much of Norm’s life was devoted to the work he so enjoyed, he also looked forward to going for drives and trying to confuse the GPS in the car, woodworking and spending time with his family, especially his little dogs (all called Buddy, no matter what their names were). 

Norm was able to enjoy the comforts of being home during his journey over the past few years. This was all made possible with the special care and support of sisters, Donna and Ruth; his VON caregivers, nurses and palliative care team. Special thanks to all of our friends and family who have made visits and calls during that time.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Norm preferred the warm weather and did not want anyone to be out in the cold. Margaret Anne “Peggy” Lamb

Lamb, Margaret Anne “Peggy” – Age 65 of Dartmouth, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2019 at home. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Harvey Keeping and Doreen (Gilbert) Moore.

Peggy was very involved in her community and in her younger years participated in many sports, an interest that she maintained for several years. She enjoyed her role as a grandmother and was involved in their lives as much as she could be.

She will be loved and missed by husband, Robert “Bob”; children, Angela, Andrea, Sara, Emma, Robert “Bubba”; grandchildren, Robert, Mack, Erica, Demarcus, Kobe; brothers, Charles Moore, Linden Richardson, Glen Dominaux; sister, Charlene Moore. She was predeceased by brother, Bernard Keeping.

Michael Stanley Gallant

Gallant, Michael Stanley – Age 71 of White Rock/Bedford. It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Michael Stanley Gallant. Mike passed away peacefully in Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home on Saturday, February 23, 2019, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s.

Mike is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margo Gallant (Forsythe), Bedford; daughter, Kimberely (Paul) Wills, Sackville; son, Nick (Trish Gagliardi) Gallant, Ottawa; beloved grandchildren, Henry and Kate Gallant; his sisters, Hope Davidson, New Minas; Joyce (Terry) Karges, Ontario; brother, Orville Levy, Berwick; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Mike was born in Black River, and spent most of his life in White Rock, where he raised his family. He worked as a journeyman plumber, and like so many other dads, he had many talents and could make anything he put his mind to. Carpentry was a great love of his, and he spent many evenings and weekends out in his workshop with the wood stove blazing, listening to CBC Radio, while he meticulously built furniture and created folk art from recycled metals. His motto was, “Anything worth doing is worth doing well”, and he instilled those values in his children.

Mike loved nature and was at his happiest when he was outside, breathing in the fresh air. He shared this love with his family and would take them fishing in the spring at Porcupine Brook, as he had done as a kid. He would put the worms on the hook and we’d cast the lines, staying as long as the black flies would allow. In March, we’d take the dog and walk the woods path behind the house, searching for the older maple trees to tap, along the brook, and boil down the sap on the wood stove.

Mike’s greatest love was his family, and that love grew even bigger when he became a Grampy. He enjoyed reading books to Henry and Kate, and entertaining them with funny sounds that made them laugh. He looked forward to spending time in Ottawa, visiting Nick and his family, and walking around the grounds on Parliament Hill. One of his favourite spots was to sit in the gazebo that overlooked the Ottawa River, then head to the local pub for a pint of raspberry wheat.

Mike had plans to spend his retirement puttering around in his workshop, enjoying time with his family, and being a part of his grandchildren’s lives. Those plans changed when Mike was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 11 years ago. The disease robbed him of his future plans and his memories, but it did not rob the family’s memories of him.

Mike always had a smile on his face and put the needs of others ahead of his own. He’d comfort people with a hug or an arm around their shoulder and say, “How are you, dear?” When his Alzheimer’s became advanced, and he first moved to Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home, he would go around smiling and shaking people’s hands, introducing himself, “Hello, I’m Mike Gallant”. He was so happy to be surrounded by his new family, and enjoyed helping the staff and residents.  

In keeping with Mike’s wishes, cremation has taken place. His family will celebrate his life with a private ceremony in Ottawa at a later date. Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home Foundation.

A special thank you to Dad’s second family, the loving staff and residents of Saint Vincent’s Nursing Home. They always found ways to accommodate Mike’s various stages of Alzheimer’s in a respectful and loving way.

Jean Elizabeth Wallace-Sanford

Wallace-Sanford, Jean Elizabeth – Age 70, of Shubenacadie, passed away February 23, 2019, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Chester, she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Bessie (Church) Armstrong.

Family was important to Jean and she enjoyed the time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter. She will always be remembered and missed by sons, Derek and Kerby Wallace; grandchildren, William, Serena, Rainah and Ashlyn; great-granddaughter, Aleena; as well as her chosen “Sis”, Shirley Rhuland. She was predeceased by daughter, Tina Marie; brother, Deanie.

Cremation has taken place. There will be no public visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Michael Richard Woolridge

Woolridge, Michael Richard – Age 82, of Enfield. Surrounded by love, Mike passed away on February 20, 2019.

Lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Betty (Lawrie) Woolridge; his children, Michael, Chris and Michele (John) Newhook; his grandchildren, Katie, Mandi and Drew Newhook; and his large Newfoundland family of siblings, nieces and nephews.

His life was a patchwork of experiences, as his long career in the airline industry took him and Betty around the globe making lifelong friends and having many adventures. Mike lived each and every day to its fullest. He spread happiness and kindness wherever he went. He was passionate about helping others and was an active community volunteer. He loved fiercely and in return was loved by so many. The greatest joy of his last 23 years was to be fully engaged as “Poppa” to his three grandchildren.

Mike lived a full life, and strongly believed that a life well-lived should be celebrated and not mourned. We will honour his life and his legacy with visitation with the family from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, February 22 in Enfield Fire Hall. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Enfield. (Mike would enjoy people wearing bright colors). The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made to Youth Camp Programs of the Ostomy Halifax Society (www.ostomyhalifax.ca/donate.html).

Helen Jane Castle

Castle, Helen Jane – Passed peacefully on February 19, 2019. Born into the Newman family of Carroll’s Corner, she met Charles (Vernon) Castle before the Second World War.

They married and had their first child, Wayne, before Vernon went overseas. He returned safely and they built a home in Carroll’s Corner where they raised their family of six. Except for a few memorable years in Port Hawkesbury, Helen could always be found at home in Carroll’s Corner where she gardened, cooked, baked, did yoga, knit, danced and celebrated birthdays and anniversaries with her family.

Helen lived a healthy lifestyle and always looked younger than her years. She was happy and content in the home she and Vernon created, which grew with their family. She was active throughout her life, and in her 90’s called herself “lazy” for slowing down. Always light-hearted, she enjoyed her 96th birthday with her family in January. Helen travelled across Canada, to Ontario and British Columbia, and to England and Europe and visited gardens wherever she went. She was a member of Gays River United Church and the Women’s Auxiliary of Shubenacadie Legion.

Our loving thoughts are with her – her sister, June and brother, Glen; her children, Chuck (Mary), Greg (Judy), Debbie (David), Glen (Ann) and Susan (Vernon); her grandchildren, Dewayne, Belinda, Freddie, Laurie, Catherine, Victoria, Melissa, Gregory, Tena, Mark; and great-grandchildren, Mary Jane, Brittany, Justin, Glenda, Ty, Carter, Violet, John, Elizabeth, Paige, Sam; and great great-grandchild, Ella Mae.

She was ever grateful for her caring companions who helped her stay in her home during her last days: Cindy Toney, her daughters, Debbie and Sue, Earth Angels (Truro) and Continuing Care (Northwood). Sincere thanks from the family to the Palliative Care team of Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their supportive, understanding care.

Cremation has taken place. Service will be held in Gays River United Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 23rd, followed by a get-together downstairs. Flowers welcome. Donations may be made to Gays River United Church or a charity of choice. And please plant flowers or a tree in her memory – she will smile on seeing it.

Kenneth Ross Arnold

Arnold, Kenneth Ross – Age 80, East Jeddore, passed away February 16, 2019 at home. Born in East Jeddore, he was a son of the late Henry and Eva Arnold.

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Shirley Jean Arnold; stepchildren, Lisa (Leonard) Knight, Annette and James; step grandchildren, Felisha, Spencer and Victoria; step great-grandchildren, Christopher, Sierra and Abbigale, who he loved very much. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The last member of his immediate family, he was predeceased by sisters, Ella, Mabel, Violet Pearl, Beatrice, Jerine, Lydia, Sabina; brothers, Ernest, Spencer, Howard, Frank, Herbert and Charles.

Visitation will be Wednesday, February 20, from 12:30-1:30 p.m., followed by funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Jeddore United Baptist Church, Head of Jeddore, with Pastor Aubrey Deslatte officiating. Burial will be at a later date in East Jeddore Cemetery. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Chapter, or to Shirley.

Michael Edward Maynard Arnold

Arnold, Michael Edward Maynard – Age 69, East Jeddore, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2019 at home. Born in East Jeddore, he was a son of the late Norman and Velma (Mitchell) Arnold.

Michael had been employed with the Canadian Coast Guard for 31 years, where he served on the CCS Alert and CCS Terry Fox.

Surviving are siblings, Russell (Janette), twin sister, Marlene (John) Jennex, Samuel (Verna), Daniel (Helen), Hiram (Phyllis), James, Peter, Elvona, Gabriel (Holly), Jesse, Joel, Gideon (Beverley); several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in East Jeddore Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to East Jeddore Cemetery.

Walter Ivan Clark

Clark, Walter Ivan – Age 86, of Truro, and formerly of Kingston, Ont., passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, February 13, 2019. Walter was born in Upper Musquodoboit, a son of the late George and Thelma (Redden) Clark.

Walter was well known in Truro as baker and owner of Walter’s Pastry prior to moving to Ontario.

A Celebration of Walter’s Life will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, February 18 in Hilden Fire Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Colchester East Hants VON.

Jerry Lorne Castle

Castle, Jerry Lorne – Age 71 of Wittenburg, passed away February 10, 2019 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Carrolls Corner, he was a son of the late Jack and Shirley Castle.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Helena (McCully); sons, Andrew (Tosha), Hilden; Edward (Nancy), Stewiacke; daughter, Rachel (Danny) Flynn, Truro; grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Jarrett, Sabrina, Marissa, Cohen, Hope; great-granddaughter, Rory; brothers, Donald (Marjorie), Chaswood; Lee (Marilyn), Fletchers Lake; Phil (Darlene), New Glasgow; Perry, Middle Musquodoboit; sisters, Marion Wilcox and Kay Williams, both of Dartmouth. He was predeceased by brother, Alvin; sister-in-law, Dolores; brother-in-law, Leonard Wilcox.

Cremation has taken place. The family will meet friends on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. downstairs in Gays River United Church. Burial will be at a later date in Mountain View Cemetery, Wittenburg. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Ivan Robert Jeffers

Jeffers, Ivan Robert – Of Elderbank. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ivan, on February 9, 2019, at age 91. Born in Stewiacke, he was a son of the late Charles and Josephine (Goodwin) Jeffers.

At age eight, he moved to Elderbank with his family where he later made his home and raised his own family. Farming was a way of life and he continued to milk a cow until two years ago. There were always a variety of cattle in the pasture – Texas Longhorns, Scottish Highlands, Herefords and a team of oxen from time to time. His love of horses lasted a lifetime, always having at least one in the barn. He loved going to exhibitions and connecting with his horse friends.

As a school bus driver for 35 years, many kids crossed his path. The janitor’s lunch room was a source of many stories and jokes. Ivan loved life, worked hard, enjoyed all the people he met, and was very proud of his family. He instilled morals and life skills in each of the children, sometimes giving advice when one may not necessarily want it at that particular time. Listening to fiddle music and dancing was something he and Bertha enjoyed together.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Bertha (Mitchell); children, Sheila (Joe Fisher), Ray (Daniela Savelkoul), Cheryl (Lee Johnson), Carolyn (Stephen Fudge); grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Fisher, Emily (Will Jackson), Jessica, Kathleen and Craig Johnson, Ruby Fudge; great-grandchildren, Elaina, Elizabeth and Landen Fisher; sister, Alberta Woodworth; and chosen brother, Ronnie (Janice) Cleveland.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Ivan’s life will be held on Tuesday, February 12th, from 2-4 p.m., in Meagher’s Grant Community Hall. Bring your stories and memories to share. George Emery Molnar

Molnar, George Emery – Age 80 of Lantz, passed away peacefully at home on February 4, 2019, with his family by his side. Born and raised in Nadasd, Hungary, he was a son of the late Sandor and Maria (Zabo) Molnar.

Upon his arrival in Canada in 1958, he had several jobs such as milkman, Ben’s Bread delivery man, ice cream truck driver. He worked as a labourer when the Halifax Shopping Centre was being built and later took his welding trade. He worked for many years at the Halifax Shipyards as a welder and later established Molnar Welding which is still run by his son Winston and family.

Surviving are his wife, the former Rose Marie Preeper; daughter, Elizabeth Molnar (Frank Salazar); sons, Alexander (Pamella), Stephen (Anne), Winston (Crystal), Jason (Sally); nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; sisters, Maria Horath, Ilonka Simon. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Wednesday, February 13 at 1 p.m. in Gays River United Church, with Rev. Nancy Ritchie officiating. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Stuart Arthur Gibb

Gibb, Stuart Arthur – of Truro. Our beloved Stuart passed away on February 1, 2019 after a life filled with love and laughter. He was born in Winnipeg in 1950, adopting Nova Scotia in 1975. A gardener and horticulturist, Stuart studied at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College and remained there for the rest of his career, including as manager of the grounds and greenhouses, and instructor in plant use and identification. After retiring, Stuart gave his time as a volunteer in the horticulture program at Nova Institution.

Stuart was an accomplished choir singer, a longtime member of the Truro Cantabile Singers, an early member of the Halifax Camerata Singers and also participated in local choirs at both Immaculate Conception and First Baptist Churches in Truro. Later in life, he joined New Horizons Band Truro as a saxophonist. His love of music was matched by his desire to share laughter with fellow musicians.

Stuart was loved for his gentle nature. He shared freely his kindness, patience and quick wit. Stuart was also a lifelong learner, interested in history, science and space. His time was filled with quiet dog walks, model trains and projects in his workshop. He enjoyed working on crosswords under the sun at the cottage on Prince Edward Island.

Stuart celebrated 35 years of marriage in 2018 with his wife, Sarah Macdonald. He will be forever remembered by his wife, Sarah; children, Duncan Mathew (Marianne Lafon) and Ian David (Andrea Robinson); and by his brother, David (Brigitte) Gibb; nieces, Penny, Theresa and Rebecca. He joined the Macdonald family through marriage and will be mourned by David and Susan Macdonald, Nancy and Allen Marr, Teresa and Robert Wilkie, Chris Macdonald, Andrew Macdonald and Yvette Serroul; his nieces and nephews, Mark and Matthew Macdonald, Caitlin Marr, Mary Clare and Patrick Wilkie and Ethan Macdonald. He was predeceased by parents, John and Margaret (Isherwood) and his nephew, Alex Marr. Stuart’s family was always first in his heart.

Our family is grateful for the excellent care Stuart received from medical professionals at Colchester East Hants Health Centre and in Halifax. We will never forget your many kindnesses.

Cremation has taken place. A funeral will be held on Thursday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m. in First United Church, 711 Prince St., Truro, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stuart’s name to Colchester Food Bank, Colchester East Hants Hospice Society or Nova Scotia SPCA.

Frederick “Graham” Loughead

Loughead, Frederick “Graham” – Beloved husband of the late Patricia Loughead, died peacefully surrounded by his family, in Debert Court, on January 30, 2019, at the age of 83. Born in Beaver Brook, he was a son of the late Robert and Verna Loughead.

Graham worked for the family business, Loughead’s Transport, for several years, then opened Loughead Express with his brother, Reg. He went on to open G. Loughead Services and North American Van Lines with his wife, Pat, which included delivering groceries to local seniors for over 30 years. A devoted participant of the community, he was a member of Old Barns United Church. Graham loved spending time at the VON Adult Day Program for the past couple of years.

Graham is survived by his daughters, Cindy (Steve) Fredette, Colleyville, TX; Carol (Stephan) Reale, East Greenwich, RI; Cathie (Bob) Landsburg, Truro; Christa (Gary) Giddens, Lower Truro; niece, Vicki (Troy) Colford, Valley. Graham is also survived by his greatest blessings, his grandchildren, Ashley, Taylor, Nicole and Kayla Giddens, Rachael and Egan Reale, Suzanne, Tricia and Patrick Landsburg, Talia and Jaime Fredette, Kylie and Keenan Colford; great-grandchildren, Evan, Ryan and Katelyn Cooper; brothers, Reg and his wife, Gerry; Wayne (Vicki); several nieces and nephews. Graham was predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia; granddaughter, Lindsay Giddens; brothers, Parker and Donald.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Graham’s life will be held on Saturday, February 2nd, at 2 p.m., in Old Barns United Church, with Rev. David LeBlanc officiating. A reception will follow downstairs in the church. Interment will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to VON Adult Day Program.

There are no words to express our gratitude to the staff of Debert Court for creating a loving home for Dad, and for the care his family received during his final days.
