Maria Lorena Escarreola Hernandez de Patterson

Maria Lorena Escarreola Hernandez de Patterson – Age 59, passed away April 1, 2025 in the ICU in QEII, VG Site, Halifax.

Born in David Chiriqui, Panama, she was a daughter of the late Aurelio Escarreola Valdez and Evila Maria Hernandez de Escarreola.

Maria enjoyed her Panama family and her Canadian family always speaking of them with great pride and love.

She will always be loved and missed by husband, Winfred Cyrus Patterson; daughter, Glenda Irene Patterson; son, William Aurelio Patterson; brother, Aurelio Antonio Escarreola Hernandez (Dallys Serracin de Escarreola); their children, Aurelio, José, Gerardo, Margarita, Roberto and Deisy; brother, Rodolfo Ariel Escarreola Hernadez (Yadira Hurtado de Escarreola Hijas); their children, Grace and Jonathan; sister, Glenda “Yesi” Yesenia Escarreola Hernandez (José Oliver Franco Polanco); several aunts, uncles and cousins.

She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, Celedonia de Hernandez and Antonio Hernandez and paternal grandparents, Martina Valdez and Eusebio Escarreola.

Cremation has taken place.

Funeral service will be held April 12 at 3 p.m. in Seventh Day Adventist Church, Truro.

Her final resting place will be in David Chiriqui, Panama.

Much appreciation to special friends, Donnie Kennedy, Robert Cox, Darrin O’Connell, and Peter Graham for always being there for the Patterson family. Thank you also to the members of Seventh Day Adventist Church for taking Maria in as a member and sister. Thank you to Marion Graham for always being there as Maria’s friend. Leonard Thomas Canning

Canning, Leonard Thomas – Age 64, of Upper Musquodoboit, passed away March 31, 2025 in QEII, VG Site, Halifax.

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, he was a son of the late Leonard and Marie (Stewart) Canning.

Tom enjoyed playing darts, golf and crib. He worked in the woods all of his working life, a job he thoroughly enjoyed.

Tom will always be loved and missed by sisters, Wanda (Irvin), Lori; brothers, Richard (Jan), Tony (Cindy); several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Connie.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 3 in Valley Legion Branch 147, Upper Musquodoboit, 2-5 p.m.

Bertha Winifred Rae (McMichael) Jodrey

Jodrey (McMichael), Bertha Winifred Rae - Bertha Winifred Rae Jodrey, age 95, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital.

Born in her maternal grandparents’ home in Middle Stewiacke, she was a daughter of Horatio James McMichael and Pearle Lila (Conroy) McMichael. She grew up on the family farm in Antrim before marrying Walter Jodrey and settling in Gays River, where they raised their family.

Rae taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Antrim in the early years and later in Carroll’s Corner and Stewiacke East. After leaving teaching, she worked for many years at the Shubenacadie Pharmacy until her retirement.

Rae and Walter dedicated many years of service to the Shubenacadie Food Bank, and after his passing, she continued this work with the same kindness and commitment.

A devoted member of St. James United Church in Gays River, Rae was deeply involved in her faith community. She served as a Sunday school teacher, CGIT leader, choir member, and sewing club member. Along with fellow church members, she was instrumental in bringing the Scouting movement to Gays River and establishing the first Scout troop there.

Rae was predeceased by her parents, Horatio and Pearle; her husband, Walter; her brother, James; and her sister, Joan.

She is survived by her sister, Marion Elizabeth (Alex); her sons, Michael and William (Toby); her daughters, Pearl Anne (Claude) and Patricia (Kevin); her grandchildren, Meagan, Leslie, Brittany, Andrew, Jennifer, Dustin; her great-grandchildren, Anthony, Oliver, Theodore, Paisley, Russell, and Johnathan.

She will also be greatly missed by her beloved cats, who were always curled up on her lap to watch hockey, baseball, and curling, and who will especially miss their morning treats from Nanny.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Gays River United Church on Sunday, April 6, from 2-4 p.m. A private family service and interment will take place at a later date.

Gale, Robert Henry – Age 78, of Ostrea Lake passed away March 28, 2025 in Dartmouth General Hospital.

Born in Ostrea Lake, he was a son of the late Sheldon and Leona (Mosher) Gale.

Bob had been a fisherman for most of his working years. He was known for his kindness and compassion toward others.

Surviving are his sister, Elsie Leaman, Musquodoboit Harbour; brother, Perry, Calgary; children, Annie, Robert Jr., Dwayne, Esther, Shelly; grandchildren, Christopher and Amelia.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his partner, Marjorie Martin.

Cremation has taken place.

Burial will take place in Ostrea Lake Cemetery.

Lillian Jane Gilbert

Gilbert, Lillian Jane – Age 94 of Middle Sackville and formerly of Lantz, passed away March 27, 2025 in Vimy Court, Bible Hill.

Born in Upper Musquodoboit, she was a daughter of the late Winifred and Arthurine (Drysdale) Dean.

Lillian was a long-time employee of Eaton’s and enjoyed the time she spent with the Dart Club Association. Her family was the core of her being, she enjoyed spending time with them and being pampered by them. She was always an animal lover and had a dog or cat of her own.

She will always be loved and missed by her children, Carol (Allan) Totten, Lorne (Dorothy) Gilbert, Paulette (Bruce) Holland; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Gilbert; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren; sister, Sylvia Newhook.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lorne; sons, Clinton, John, Allan; sisters, Florence, Violet; brothers, Harry, William and Allan.

Cremation has taken place.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Upper Musquodoboit.

Mavis Sparling Turple

Turple, Mavis Sparling – Age 92, passed away on March 27, 2025 in The Birches, Musquodoboit Harbour.

Born in Oyster Pond, she was a daughter of the late Cyril and Merle (Mitchell) Blakeney.

She was a teacher in her early years, stay at home mum and then worked at The Fishermans Life museum until she retired. She and Austen took their Sunday drives without exception.  Mavis had her first plane ride at the age of 75 and then two memorable trips after that - one to Dominican and one to Cuba.

Mavis is survived by daughter, Cathy; son, Michael (Laurena); grandchildren, Jacqueline (William), Jordan (Lauryn), Rylie (Donald); great-grandson, Austin; siblings, Brenda Charest, Ward Blakeney,  Mona (Gus) Mosher, and Drew Blakeney

She was predeceased by husband, Austen; infant daughter, Janice Lee; brother, Carman Blakeney; sister-in-law, Agnes Blakeney; brother-in-law, John Charest.

Service will be held in First United Church in Musquodoboit Harbour at 11 on April 5.

Alice May Barkhouse

Barkhouse, Alice May – Age 80 of Truro, passed away March 26, 2025 in Debert Court. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Burton and Mary Arnold.

Alice enjoyed life. She was a great baker and preserver and was well-known for her cake decorating skills. Many were on the receiving end of her kindness and giving ways. She had a quick wit and sense of humour. Alice and a servant’s heart, loved her family dearly and loved her Lord.

She will always be loved and missed by daughter, Annette (Terry) Rideout; son, Rowland (Ellen); siblings, George, Doris, Betty and Bill (Donna); many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald; siblings, Reg, Russell, Ralph, Mabel and Marion.

Cremation has taken place.

Funeral service will be April 5 at 2 p.m. in Marine Drive Pentecostal Church, Head Jeddore. Burial will be in East Jeddore Cemetery.

Eric Francis Bowers

Bowers, Eric Francis - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our much-loved father and Papa, Eric Francis Bowers on March 26, 2025 at the age of 91. Eric was an adoring husband, father and grandfather, and a devoted member of his faith community. As a lifelong storyteller and entertainer, Eric will be remembered by many for the music and stories he shared. 

Eric was the eldest son of the late Clifford and Olive Bowers. He grew up in Halifax and Fall River, and later lived in Stewiacke with his loving wife, Winnie, and their six children. 

He is survived by his children, Mitchell (Darlene), Anne (Stephen) MacKeil, Marlene (Brian) White, Tim (Irene), Charles (Leah); daughter-in-law, Anne Keeler; and his 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert, Keith and Ross; and sisters, Sheila and Sharon. 

He was predeceased by his wife, Winnifred; his son, Peter; brother, Gary; and sisters, Joyce and Peggy. 

Eric retired from a long career working for Nova Scotia Power, with sons and grandchildren following in his footsteps. He generously volunteered his time at church and in his community. He loved fishing, running, hockey, baseball, and walking in his later years. Special memories were made in Kemptville during summers with his family. Eric was a beautiful songwriter and was rarely found without a tape recorder and notebook in his pocket.

Eric spent much of his time singing and playing his guitar, and was honoured to be inducted into the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003. Country music was his life. From Nine Mile River Jamborees, country clubs, dances and weddings, to residential care facilities, front porches and living rooms, Eric spread his love of music with everyone he could.

Dad truly enjoyed people and could strike up a conversation with anyone he met. His genuine interest in others made him so fun to talk to. He loved to learn all about you and was happy to share how proud he was of his family and loved ones. He was a hugger, and even if you just met him, you would know each other by the time your talk was done. 

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the nurses and staff of Cedarstone and a special thanks to Sam at Parkland, for their attentive and compassionate care.

A funeral will be held on April 12th at 11 a.m. in St. Bridget's Catholic Church in Shubenacadie. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local food bank. 

Dad (Papa) displayed a humble appreciation for a well lived life, and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a true legacy in country music, which will be carried on through his children and grandchildren.

Reginald "Reg" Bellefontaine

Bellefontaine, Reginald “Reg” - With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Reginald “Reg” Bellefontaine at the age of 72 after a long struggle with lung disease. Reg was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, known for his boundless generosity and his knack for turning life into an adventure.

A master of laughter and magic, Reg had an extraordinary ability to bring joy to those around him—whether through his memorable treasure hunts for his children and grandchildren, his quick wit, or the countless projects he took on. His home was a place of love and creativity, where he worked tirelessly on a water fountain, a patio with a fireplace, a duck pond, and a bog garden, always dreaming up ways to make life more special for his family and friends.

Above all, Reg’s greatest love was his family. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lois; his sons, Troy, Kris, and Josh; and his stepson, Troy. He cherished his time with his children and grandchildren, creating memories that will live on for generations. His legacy of kindness, adventure, and unwavering devotion will forever be held in our hearts.

He will be deeply missed by his loved ones, and his spirit will remain in every joke told, every mystery unraveled, and every moment shared with laughter and love.

A Celebration of Reg’s Life will be held on Thursday, March 27th, from 1-3 p.m. upstairs in Chezzetcook Fire Hall, 5543 Trunk 7, Head of Chezzetcook.

Pearl Marie Park

Park, Pearl Marie - This is the story of our sweet, kind, big hearted, funny and loving Mother, sister, aunt and cousin, Pearl Park, who, surrounded by her family, left us on March 24, 2025 after a brief illness.

She arrived at the Truro hospital, as the sixth child of the late Burton and Arlene (Upham) Park. She spent her childhood on her family’s farm in Salmon River, with many days at her late Aunt Eva and Uncle Vincent’s (Kendrick) in North River.

Pearl received her hairdresser designation, from what was then the vocational school, following which she cut and styled client’s hair at various salons in Truro, including her home. She was also employed as a custodian of the BMO building as well as an employee of Polymer.

The expression “pride and joy” describes how Pearl felt about her daughter, Tara and son, Duell. While her children were still toddlers, the young family moved to British Columbia close to her brother, Stacy and his family. Pearl returned to her family in Nova Scotia 16 years ago where she was determined to overcome the effects of debilitating pain.  

Left to cherish memories of her laugh, sense of humour and love for family are daughter, Tara Whitelaw, BC; and son, Duell Donaldson, Alberta; siblings, Sheila, Wendell (Diane), Janet (Lev MacLeod), Judy (Allen) Thompson, Darlene (Gary) Higgins, Terry,  all of Truro; and Stacy (Roxy), Alberta; along with several nieces, nephews and her fur baby, Jack.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Irving; nephews, Daniel and Ryan; grandparents, Theodore and Annie Upham, Elias and Harriet Park.

Of course, this isn’t the whole story of Pearl Marie Park, but perhaps it’s important that her loved ones keep cherished memories close to our hearts.

Arrangements for a Farewell service to celebrate our beloved Pearl are incomplete and will be posted at a later date.

In lieu of flowers please honour her through donations to The Salvation Army, Carma Cat Rescue and/or by reaching out in a random act of kindness.

Lynn Marie (Newson) Burgess

Burgess (Newson), Lynn Marie - Lynn Marie (Newson) Burgess passed suddenly on Monday, March 24, 2025 at her home on South Loon Lake, NS at the age of 58.

Lynn was born in Belleville, Ont.  She spent her childhood in Belleville and Trenton where she met and married Glen Burgess. Glen and Lynn had two children, Matthew and Tiffany, and fostered and mentored many others when they settled in Barrie, Ontario.  In 2014 Lynn, Glen, and Matthew lost Tiffany in a marine accident, leaving them in a permanent sense of loss. Lynn never had a day without thinking of their beautiful, full of life daughter.

Glen and Lynn retired to Glen’s roots - a lake front property on South Loon Lake, NS in 2020. In November 2024 Lynn became a Godmother to Violette.  She wore the honor like a crown, glowing with pride when she spoke of her.

Lynn was proud of her life. She created a beautiful home where-ever they lived. She was proud of their latest Nova Scotia home by the water. She loved her Little She Shed, and beautiful gardens. Sewing kept her busy. She cooked the best homemade treats and breads. She was so talented. Everyone who met her knew she was a kind, thoughtful, talented, smart, generous, loving woman. She loved her family, and treated friends like family, enjoying laughter and sorrows.

Lynn will be fondly remembered by all the lives she touched – family, friends and her dedicated work with Child and Family Services Barrie Ont. 

Lynn is survived by her husband, Glen; son, Matthew (Alisha); sisters, Kathy (Jim), Noreen (David), Teresa; step-sisters, Annette and Yvonne; granddaughters, Blake and Lily; and goddaughter, Violette Claire (Jason and Stephanie).  She also leaves behind 10 nieces and nephews, and 30 young people to whom she was a Great Aunt.

Lynn is predeceased by her daughter, Tiffany; mother, Dorothy Newson Robicheau; and brother, Leroy “Billy” Newson

We are heartbroken to say goodbye to such a beautiful woman, finding comfort only in knowing she is now with Tiffany watching over us all.

Rest peacefully Lynn. We will be watching for you to remind us you are with us in spirit - showing yourself in a hummingbird, a honey bee, a freshly bloomed flower, a cardinal, sitting on the aroma of fresh bread, a drop of rain on a hot day, or a wayward piece of thread.

In lieu of flowers please plant a flower for Lynn and/or put out a hummingbird feeder.

Jacquline Glee Clark

Clark, Jacqueline Glee - Jacqueline Glee Clark died on March 24, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.  Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late John S and Florence (Rockey) MacLeod.  

She was employed with the NS Department of Environment and Labour as a Secretary.  

She is predeceased by her husband, Carl Clark and granddaughter, Bret Ash-leigh Clark.  She is survived by her prides and joy, her daughter, Cheryl Clark and her son, John Clark (Marla); her greatest gifts, her grandchildren, Jennifer Teal (Scott), Cody Clark (Casey), and Madison Affleck (Andrew); her daughter-in-law, Lisa Reiten; and her sister, Sandra Falle.

A Celebration of Life will be held on April 26th from 1-3 p.m. in Salmon River Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to an animal rescue agency or a cancer charity of your choosing. Marjorie Blanche (Borgal) Barkhouse

Barkhouse (Borgal), Marjorie Blanche - Marjorie Blanche (Borgal) Barkhouse, age 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

She is survived by her children and their spouses/partners, Pam Jollimore, Kimberley Gerrard (Jim), Wanda Brewer (Grant), Lisa Duffy (Nik), Reg Barkhouse, David Barkhouse (Colleen); grandchildren, Bradley Jollimore (Jo Lynn), Chad Jollimore (Lindsay), Jenesta Kimball (Brian), Amanda Grant (Cory), Nathan Brewer (Liz), Corey Brewer, Thomas Barkhouse, Cody Barkhouse, Zachariah Barkhouse, Avery Barkhouse, Cian Morrison; great-grandchildren, Gage Jollimore, Clara Jollimore, Madeline Jollimore, Rylan Jollimore, Brayden Grant, Arianna; and sisters, Audrey Verge, June Clattenburg.

She was predeceased by husband, Reginald Barkhouse; parents, Maurice and Annie Borgal; brother, Jack Borgal; son-in-law, James Jollimore 

Marjorie married in 1955, she lived in Fairview until 1985, when she moved to Carroll's Corner. Later on she moved to Sackville to live with daughter, Wanda and then to live in Wittenburg with daughter, Pam. Her last month of life was spent in Harbourview Lodge in Sheet Harbour.

She was an avid gardener. She had many beautiful flower gardens and was a member of Country Garden Club. She was an active member of the Gays River United Church. You could find her in the kitchen for church suppers and card parties. She had the gift of hospitality, she always wanted to make sure you had something to eat when you visited. The grandkids always made a beeline to the yellow cookie can.

Thank you to Harbourview Lodge for the care given to her in her final days.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, 2 p.m. in Wittenburg Baptist Church, 777 Wittenburg Road, Wittenburg.

Edward Addington Myers

Myers, Edward Addington – Age 84 of Myers Point passed away March 21, 2025.

In his younger days, he worked as a guide and for the Department of Highways, Siteman’s Garage and then Conrad’s Trucking until his retirement. He built his own home where he lived until he passed.

Edward is survived by his son, Stephen, whom he was proud to have follow in his footsteps, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Terry Donald; parents, Hillman and Stella (Day); sisters, Brenda Butler, Enid Hare; brothers, Clarence, Ernest, Keith, Donald and Glenroy.

Special thanks to Darrell and Jolanda Myers, Robert, Irvin and Harry Rafuse, Earl Day, Mark DeBaie, Bonnie and Lou Lambert for their many visits with Dad.

Irene Elizabeth Louise (Knibbs) McNutt

McNutt (Knibbs), Irene Elizabeth Louise - With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Irene Elizabeth Louise (Knibbs) McNut, who left us on March 20, 2025, at the age of 90. She passed away peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born in Truro to Louise (MacDonald) and James Knibbs, Irene lived a life filled with laughter, love, and deep care for those around her. She dedicated her life to others, as a devoted mother, adoring grandmother, compassionate caregiver, and cherished friend. Her sharp wit, infectious laugh, and boundless sense of humor ensured that joy was present in every moment she shared.

Irene was the proud mother of five children—Eric (Tammy), Carolyn, Sharon (Clinton), Terry and Dale (Tanya). She was a loving grandmother to Stephanie, Jason, Crystal, Ryan, and Amanda, and a doting great-grandmother to 12. She had a gift for bringing people together—whether through her delicious home-cooked meals, yearly planned gatherings, or simply making sure no one left her home hungry.

Her love knew no bounds—she had a deep affection for all animals, especially the six beloved dogs who shared her life over the years. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures, whether it was savoring a good meal, solving crossword puzzles, or in the company of those she loved most. With a heart full of love and a smile that could ease any uncertainty, Irene made every moment brighter for those around her. She is now reunited with her daughter, Carolyn; her great-granddaughter, Liberty; her brothers, Ron and Jerry; and her parents.

A heartfelt thank you to Willard Richardson, Edena Joudrey, Marina Fisher, and Tony Thurlow--dear friends and confidants--who held a special place in her heart. A special thanks to Colchester East Hants Health Centre, doctors, nurses and Hospice Society for their excellent care and compassion.

Irene (Mom, Grammie), we will miss you daily in this life. Fly high, our beautiful angel, until we meet again.

In keeping with her wishes, there will be no formal funeral or visitation. A family memorial will be held privately at a later date.

Janice enjoyed cooking, making homemade dish towels, going to bingo and especially visiting her grandkids. She did not like dirty dishes left in the sink and nobody ever had to wonder what she was thinking because she said it. She was very talented and loved to draw and paint and enjoyed going for drives with her daughter.

Surviving are her sons, Curtis Lynds (Jessica Hamilton), Chris (Stacey) Lynds; daughter, Tina Lynds (Walter Dash); sisters, Wanda (Jeff) Ash, Shelly (Max) Crowe; mother, Diane Lindsay; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her father, Blair and brother, Jason.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Juliana "Jules" (DeMartin) Langille

Langille (DeMartin), Juliana “Jules” - of Alton, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro (age - closely guarded secret). Jules was born and raised in Britt, Ontario, to Italian immigrant parents, Edith and Dino DeMartin. She attended Catholic boarding school, where her antics drew the ire of the nuns, and her late-night escapes were legendary. After boarding school, she moved to Toronto for a life in the big city.

It was in Toronto that Jules met her husband, Bill, and where they raised their two daughters, Karen and Gayle, until their move to Nova Scotia in 1973. After the initial shock of moving to Alton, she met great neighbours and friends in her community where she continued to live for 50 years.

Those who knew Jules will remember her vibrant presence with a social life that rivaled that of most 20-somethings. Whether she was having coffee at the mall, lunch with friends, sunning at the beach, bowling, golfing, or shopping, Jules was easily recognized by her distinctive voice, iconic Italian mannerisms, and her Honda Civic with “Jewels” vanity plates. Many will remember her as the unofficial monarch of the Truro mall, where she held court from 2 to 5 each day. During the rare times she was at home, she was an avid couch curler and an expert Cryptoquote decoder. Jules was a member of the Brookfield Golf Course for more than thirty years, where she could be seen walking the course with fellow “Spice Girl”, Pearl Clark.

Jules cherished her wide social circle, though she endured numerous storms, including grieving the loss of many of her closest friends. She was known to dispense words of wisdom to her children, grandchildren, and anyone who would listen. Her humour, love of gossip, and occasional tendency to flip the bird, kept her friends, family, and many acquaintances entertained throughout her long life. Whether you knew her as Jules, Julie, Mom, Gamgam, or Grammy Jules, she was a lady you will not soon forget and left indelible marks on the lives of all who knew her. She was a force to be reckoned with!

Jules is survived by her daughters, Karen (Blaise) MacNeill and Gayle (Terry) Matheson; along with her cherished granddaughters, Olivia (Matt), Madelyn (Rob), Lauren (Ramesh), Carlee, Clare, and Maria. Jules is also survived by her siblings, George, Dino (Dale), Linda (Jim), Sylvia (George), and Mary (Cliff). She was predeceased by her husband, Bill and sister-in-law, Lucy Pellizari.

In lieu of flowers, take your best friend out to lunch and have an ice-cold Keith’s in Jules’s honor.

Celebration of Life to be held in Truro Golf Club on Sunday, March 30th from 2-5pm.

Harry "Douglas" MacKay

MacKay, Harry “Douglas” – of Truro, passed away on March 18, 2025 at the age of 79.

Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Donald Robert MacKay and Helen Kathleen (Cooper) MacKay.

He was a former employee of the Town of Truro for 24 years and D & D Shell.

Douglas is survived by stepson, Kelly Blaine McCabe, Chilliwack, BC; brother, Hugh (Cheryl) MacKay, Eastville; sister, Lorna Johnson, Newton Mills; sister-in-law, Lorraine MacKay; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Douglas was predeceased by his wife, Ruby Maud (Brown)(McCabe); stepson, Christopher Stephen McCabe and brother, Leslie MacKay.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.

Cremation has taken place.

A graveside service will be held at a later date in Watson Cemetery, 1997 East Prince Street, Truro.

Frederick D. G. Cole

Cole, Frederick D. G. - Frederick D.G. Cole passed away early morning of March 17, 2025, from complications of prostate cancer, pneumonia and influenza A. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Lorne D. Cole and Pauline C. (Canton).

Fred was born in Tatamagouche. He was educated in Tatamagouche and attended McGill, Saint Mary’s and Acadia Universities. He taught elementary school in North River Elementary for over thirty years and worked as a Math Mentor in elementary schools in the Truro area, until he retired in 2009. He and his husband, Richard travelled in the United States for eight years before finally settling in Bible Hill. They

travelled to various countries exploring the rich culture and diversity the world has to offer. He enjoyed reading and listening to an eclectic collection of music. Fred was a faithful practitioner of daily meditation, the practice led to his true enjoyment of all segments of his life. Many hours were spent watching British dramas and occasional enjoying the British staple “Coronation Street.” A glass of red wine or single malt concluded many a day in retirement. Fred spent many days at COLESPOT, the family cottage in Malagash. He never ceased to be amazed taking in the beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the waters of the Northumberland Strait. Fred enjoyed the company of the family’s mini schnauzers, Ruff, Humphrey and Archer during his life.

Fred is survived by his husband, Richard Corteel; his sisters, Kim (Lynn) Cole, Loreen (George) MacNutt; cousins, niece and nephews; a special great-nephew, Sam; and a very special Aunt Faye. A private burial will take place at Lockerby Cemetery in Tatamagouche later in the year.

Phyllis Marie MacDonald

MacDonald, Phyllis Marie - Mom passed peacefully in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro on March 14, 2025 after a short respiratory illness.

Mom thought for many years that it would be her last year. Well, she surprised herself and was blessed with 97 years.

She was born and lived in Stewiacke for 94 years. Mom was a lifetime ladies auxiliary member of the Stewiacke Legion, Branch 70. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church where she served on many boards and was an auxiliary member and a choir member for over 40 years. Boy, did she love to sing! Mom was employed at Canada Post in Stewiacke for 20 years and retired in 1989 as assistant post master.

Mom and Doug could be seen at pretty well all dances over the years. They were a sight to behold either slow dancing or kicking up their heels on the dance floor.

Mom was predeceased by her parents, Wyman and Harriet (Ramsey) Jeffers; daughter, Betty Marie Wright; grandson, Stephen Fraser Wright; husband, J. Douglas MacDonald.

Mom was the last living sibling in her family of nine. She lost her brothers, Carl, Darrell, Avard, Wilfred and Fred; and sisters, Rena Ellis, Marion Atkinson, Avis Fullerton.

Phyllis leaves behind son, Stephen Wright (Valerie), Stewiacke East; daughter, Janice (David) Peterson, Brookfield; daughter, Faye (Ernie) Maguire, Calgary. Mom’s heart was filled with love for her grandchildren, Leanne Wright (Duane Smith), Darrell Wright; Kevin Peterson (Heather), Wade Peterson (Alana), Darren Peterson; Kyle Maguire (Jen Loptson) and Mark Maguire; and eight very special great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Ethel Jeffers (Fred); several nieces and nephews.

Mom led a very difficult life beginning at the age of nine when she lost her mother. Many heartbreaks followed but she kept her chin up and focused on her family members who stood by her. She always was quick to show her love and support.

Mom has lost over the years her many friends but still had her good friend, Gwen Hodder who we thank for her continued friendship. We would have been lost without the support and love of our dear cousin, Lorraine Michie. Not only is she mom’s niece, but has been mom’s dearest friend for many years and has helped and supported us with mom’s care for many years.

Thank you so much to Susan and all of mom’s care givers at the Mira where she resided for the last three years. She was so thankful for all of the Mira nurses and staff for their compassionate care.

Cremation will be under the care of the Arimathea Funeral Home.

A graveside service will take place at a later date at Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East.

Donations may be made to Canadian Mental Health Association – Nova Scotia Division or charity of choice.
