Charles James "Jim" White

It is with a deep and enduring sadness that the family announce the passing of Jim White husband, father, brother, and grandfather. With that sadness, we also acknowledge a quiet relief that he was finally given sweet release of his soul from his earthbound body. His spirit endured to the end but his body failed him a little more each day. He passed peacefully in his sleep on September 24th, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre. At the time he was cared for by the kindest and most gentle caregivers and Palliative Care Nurses on the third floor. Our deepest appreciation to those who cared for him in his last days. Thank you to the Maitland and Noel First Responders for their many trips and the VON who came to the house. Through his illness, he never complained. He always had a smile and a smart remark for all who cared for him at home or in the hospital, especially his favorite daughter- in- law, Tobi. He leaves behind his wife, Agnes of 51 years; children, Malcolm Mulligan (Debbie), Scott White (Tobi), Carla Patterson (Jeff); granddaughter, Charlie Patterson; brother, Bob White (Linda). He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy (Faulkner) Lee, and his youngest child, Jason Matthew White, age 23. A grief he carried with him till the end. Through the years he was always remembered by Jason’s girlfriend, Danielle and their large group of friends.Thank you to the Cox Family, the best neighbours. They came to his rescue many times when he got his tractor stuck. They also gave Scott permission to mow a path his Dad could use by himself at first and at the end be wheeled through. He believed he lived in the most beautiful place on earth and amongst the best people. He also had a lifelong bond with the animals that walked alongside him – his horses and his dogs. Whether working in his vegetable garden, having coffee with friends, going on trail rides with Ryley, Mary, Christie and others, or tending to his animals, he lived with a quiet pride and love for the simple but meaningful things. All friends and neighbours are welcome to join us in saying a final goodbye to Jim. A gathering will be held in 9 Church Hill, Maitland, on Saturday, October 11, from 1-3 p.m. Stop by and share a beverage and snack. This seems a very appropriate gesture as he loved his coffee group. Terrance "Terry" Norman MacIntyre

MacIntyre, Terrance “Terry” Norman – It is with profound sadness that we wish to announce the passing of Terrance “Terry” Norman MacIntyre on September 22, 2025. Born in Miramichi, NB he lived in Halifax for a number of years and moved to Nine Mile River with his wife and son where he remained until his passing. After a long stay in three hospitals, he lost his courageous battle with heart and lung disease with his family by his side.

Terry was predeceased by his parents, Norman and Shirley (Gallant) MacIntyre and brother-in-law, Tommy Singer. 

He is lovingly survived by his wife of 50 years, Cheryl; daughter, Stephanie (Darald); son, Jaime; best friend and sister, Cheryl Anne; brother, Jerry (Margaret); and favourite cousin, Betty Ann (Brian). They will forever cherish his memory and many laughs they shared. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Briana (Clifton), Tristyn, Jon, beloved grandson, Logan (Lana) and his great-grandchildren, Kole, Maverick, Rhett; and many nieces and nephews, particularly Arianne who held a special place in his heart.  

Terry had an avid love of cars and in his younger years worked for several dealerships in the city. He left the dealerships for a 20-year career with the Royal Canadian Navy as a Marine Engineer.  Upon his retirement from the Navy, he rebuilt a mustang with his daughter from the frame out. His wife and daughter enjoyed the Mustang for a number of years. His passion for cars gave him a second career where he built a car club and successful auto mechanic business. He also was able to be an active parent in raising his son, Jaime, his joy. 

Cremation has taken place and no services at his request.

Jessie Kay (Langille) Geddes

Geddes, Jessie Kay (Langille) – It is with heavy hearts and sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Jessie Kay (Langille) Geddes at the age of 88. Jessie passed away peacefully in the Palliative Care Ward in the VG.

Born in Middle Musquodoboit, daughter of the late Earle and Florence (Murphy) Langille. Jessie travelled the country as an Air Force spouse raising her four children with her late husband, Donald Lloyd, which took strength, patience and a sense of humour. In her spare time, Jessie loved to curl, play darts, bowl and enjoyed caddying for her husband and late brother-in-law, Jim Horne. Once all the children were off to school Jessie entered the work force which most of her time was as a Public Servant with the Department of National Defence. On retirement, Don and Jessie spent 16 years as Snowbirds going to Panama City Beach, FL where they shared many good times with friends and family there.

Jessie was a proud legion member for 37 years with the last 20 years as a member of Centennial Legion Branch 160 here in Dartmouth. Throughout those 37 years Jessie was a valued volunteer in many capacities. Jessie became a regular fixture on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays sitting at her usual spot sharing camaraderie with friends she made over the years. This was a very important part of Jessie’s life.

Her memory lives on in the hearts and minds of her children, Wendy (John) Quilty, Don Geddes, Dale Geddes and Joanne Geddes; grandchildren, Natasha, Michael, Joshua, David, and Patrick; great-grandchildren, John, Amaya, Aidan, Quinn, Evy and Emma; and great great-grandchild Alina. She is also survived by her siblings, Donnie (Helen) Langille and Donna (John) MacNeil.

In addition to her parents and late husband, she is predeceased by her siblings, Roy (Reta) Langille, Edith (Jim) Horne, and Eunice (Ray) Smiley.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the amazing Community Palliative Care Team and the Staff and Volunteers on the Palliative Care Ward in the VG who showed great kindness and compassion to our mother.

Cremation has taken place.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 1-4 p.m. on Thursday, September 25th in Royal Canadian Legion, Centennial Branch 160, 703 Main Street, Dartmouth.

Geraldine "Shelly" Patricia (McDonell) Woodgate

Woodgate, Geraldine “Shelly” Patricia (McDonell) – It is with heavy hearts that the family of Geraldine “Shelly” Patricia (McDonell) Woodgate, age 74, of Bible Hill, announce her peaceful passing on 19 September 2025.

Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Harriet May (Colbert) and Donald Joseph McDonell.

Shelly’s greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, Robert; and daughters, Ellen Nadeau (Rob) and Erin Vacheresse (Marc), whom she considered her greatest accomplishments and life’s most precious gift. Shelly found immense joy in being Grammie to Connor (Brittney), Caitlin (Sebastian), Riley (Lauren), Gabriel, Logan (Kelsey), Jozee (Matthew) and Piercyn - a love that was unmistakable to anyone who saw her with them.

She is also survived by her siblings, Mary Ellen MacIsaac, Jean McDonell, Hennie (Ervin) Gilby, Patrick (Linda) McDonell, Kimberley McDonell; sister-in-law, Dena McDonell; and mother-in-law, Ivy Mellaney. She was a special Aunt to many nieces and nephews, and their families, whose lives she touched with her kindness.

Shelly was predeceased by her sister, Judy Carr; brother, Donald McDonell; brothers-in-law Lloyd MacIsaac and Mike Carr.

Shelly provided unwavering support to her children and community. This led to her giving generously of her time and energy whether volunteering with her children’s extracurricular activities or joining community organizations. We fondly remember her chaperoning concert band trips, serving as a Girl Guide leader and cheering from the sidelines. Later on, she took up lawn bowls and became an umpire with Lawn Bowls Nova Scotia. She was a faithful Roman Catholic and held many volunteer roles within her church, always ready to lend a hand. Her commitment to helping others was a reflection of her kind heart and generous spirit.

Shelly had a wide range of interests that reflected her curiosity and creativity. She enjoyed attending agricultural and equestrian exhibitions, where she delighted in the energy and tradition of rural life. She found joy in sewing, knitting and playing card and board games. Always up for a challenge, she took up ukulele and percussion proving that it’s never too late to find delight in something new. She was an enthusiastic spectator of curling, always cheering on her favourite teams with passion and pride. These hobbies brought her comfort, connection, and countless cherished moments. Shelly approached her work with quiet determination, contributing meaningfully across several positions throughout her career. Her last employer was the Nova Scotia Research Foundation, where her career was sadly cut short due to complications from illness.

Shelly will be remembered for her unwavering love, her gentle spirit, and the way she made everyone feel at home. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who loved her.

Our family would like to acknowledge the tremendous gift of organ donation which allowed Shelly to enjoy an additional 30 years of life. We extend heartfelt thanks to the medical teams at QEII Health Sciences Centre and Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their exceptional care, compassion, and expertise.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 25th, 2025, 11 a.m. in Saint Bernard Church, Enfield, reception to follow.

Daniel Calvin Turple

Turple, Daniel Calvin – It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Daniel Calvin Turple, age 53 on September 17, 2025.

Born December 1971 in Musquodoboit Harbour, Danny was a son of the late Calvin and Carol (Mitchell) Turple. He leaves behind his brother, Bill Turple (Kelly); nephew, Calvin Turple (Kayla), all of Lake Charlotte. He also leaves behind many cousins and truly great friends. He will be deeply missed by his four-legged companion, Percy who was always by his side. 

Danny worked for the last 24 years at Mariner Forge as a sheet metal worker. He was extremely talented and known in his field for his unique skill set and craftmanship of his trade. Over the last year Danny fully enjoyed working on various jobs with Calvin, helping with Calvin’s new business. When Danny wasn’t working you could easily find him in his little green boat cruising the lake with Percy by his side (ears flapping). No one loved the lake more than Danny.

Danny was one of a kind, always willing to help a friend and well-loved in our little community. If you were on the lake or biking on the ATV trails, there was a good chance you would run into Danny.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for Danny will be held Thursday, September 25th at 2 p.m. in Jeddore United Baptist Church, 8 West Jeddore Road, Head of Jeddore, with Rev. Aubrey Deslatte officiating. A reception will follow downstairs in the church. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Doreen Sylvia Frank

Frank, Doreen Sylvia– Age 85, passed away September 15, 2025 surrounded by family. Born in Middle Stewiacke, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Lois (Peterson) Fisher. Doreen spent her lifetime taking care of others, whether it was at home or as a PCW. She enjoyed gardening, campfires to sing by, and games of crib. Her greatest advice to her children was that there is nothing in life that can’t be met with laughter. Surviving are her children, Barry (Lynda) Deyarmond, Cheryl Deyarmond, Stephan Deyarmond, Sheldon (Cindy) Deyarmond, Lisa Deyarmond (John), Darrin Deyarmond, Cory Deyarmond (Jane), daughter- in- law, Debbie Deyarmond, step-son, Glenn Frank; 19 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marlene (Jimmie) Feener, Nancy (Dave) Keddy. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Frank; son, Everett; brothers, Curtis, Lloyd, Victor. Cremation has taken place. Gloria Ann Joyce

Joyce, Gloria Ann – Age 82, of Pleasant Valley, Colchester County, passed away September 14, 2025 in The Magnolia Continuing Care, Enfield.

Born in Amherst, she was the eldest daughter of the late Bedford and Elaine (Read) Stiles.

Gloria was very active in the 4H program. She worked at Stanfield’s Limited and later in life went back to school to earn her GED so she could work with VON. Her flower gardens were a passion for her. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She will always be loved and missed by daughters, Janice (Bruce), Carla (Dan), Crystal (Ron); foster-son, Smith (Evelyn); honorary daughter, Cathy; grandchildren, Cody, Aaron (Lexie), Mitchell, Mary (Albert), Colby (Jill Ann), Kylynne (Josh), Shaun (Pamela), Jennifer, Alexis, Carlos, Sheamus, James; great-grandchildren, Janessa, Sophia, Alexander, Cali, Robert and A.J.; siblings, Diane, Linda, Raymond, Nancy, Michael, Kelly; foster-siblings, Mary and Phil.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; brothers, Dave and Owen; and sister, Norma Jean in infancy.

Cremation has taken place.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-1:45 followed by funeral service at 2 p.m., both in Knox United Church with Rev. Michael Henderson officiating.

Burial will be at a later date in West Side Cemetery, Brookfield.

John David Gordon Munroe

Munroe, John David Gordon – Age 65 of Pleasant Valley, passed away September 12, 2025 at home.

Born in Moncton, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Gordon Munroe and Erma (Brown) Rector.

Most of his working life was at Mosher Limestone, where he worked in various parts of the mill. He enjoyed riding his motorbike and tinkering in his yard.

Surviving are daughters, Lindsay Addison (Bill Dargavel), Roberta Read (John Horton); son, Derek (Jillian) Munroe; seven grandchildren and one on the way in November; brother, Robert “Bobby” (Renee) Munroe; and sister, Grace (Dan) Bresson.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by step-grandson, Kaden Horton.

Cremation has taken place.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service.

Ronald "Mick" Edmund Clarke

Clarke, Ronald “Mick” Edmund –Aged 90 years. With deep love and gratitude, we announce the peaceful passing of Ronald “Mick” Edmund Clarke, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and cherished member of his community on September 11, 2025.

Mick lived a life defined by service, generosity, and unwavering commitment to those around him. He shared 69 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Carolyn “Pat”, a partnership rooted in love, laughter, and mutual devotion.

His greatest joys were his family and his lifelong dedication to helping others. He leaves behind his children, David (Frances), Daniel (Kristy), and Darlene; grandchildren, Katherine, Kristopher, Jason, Andrew, Zachary, and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren, Ella, Dylan, Ember, Sebastian, Kiera, and Scarlett, each of whom carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength.

Mick’s spirit of service shone brightly through his 33+ years with the Dartmouth Volunteer Fire Department, and 12 years in Meaghers Grant Fire Department. He served as President of the Maritime Fire Fighters Association (1993–1995), and for 15 years, coordinated the Neighbourhood Watch in Meaghers Grant. His faith guided him as he served on Anglican Church Councils in both Bramalea, Ontario and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. He was a proud member and served as President of the Seniors Club in Musquodoboit Harbour, and could always be found with a deck of cards in hand, ready for any game, any time.

A love of sports was sparked very early in life as he followed older brothers to the baseball field, the hockey rink, and Brightwood golf course, where his love of golf led him to compete in many amateur tournaments. Other interests included woodworking, hunting, fishing, and engaging in opportunities to tells stories.

His career began at Construction Equipment and later as a production accountant and coordinator at Ball Packaging (retired in 1989) reflecting his dedication and work ethic.

Mick was predeceased by his parents, William and Agnes (Simpson) Clarke; brothers, Charles and William; and sisters, Joan and Kathleen.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Admiral Long Term Care Centre, especially Shelley D, Lisa, Anne, the Waverly Wing, and all nursing and CCA staff. Special appreciation to Florence and the other sitters who cared for Mick in his final months.

Leo Joseph Keats Guyette

Guyette, Leo Joseph Keats – Age 96, of Timberlea (formerly of Enfield, Elmsdale & Springhill) died peacefully at home on his birthday, September 11, 2025. Born in St. Peter’s, NS, he was a son of the late Alfred “Alcide” Thomas and the late Lillian Gertrude (Palmer) Guyette.

A long-time respected teacher, man of devout faith, active community volunteer, talented musician and gardener/florist, Leo gave generously of his time and talents to many worthy organizations and events. A kind man and gracious host, his door was always open to company and those in need. Strangers were just friends he hadn’t met yet.

Surviving are his children, Kim (Doug), Leo (Wendy), Claire (Peter), Michael (Catherine), Rosemary (Dick), Dawn (David), Trish (Jack); 19 grandchildren; 19 (+1 soon-to-be) great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; in-laws, Lloyd and Suzanne Pottie, Ross Pottie, Louis Kruszewski, and Ann Brown; many cousins, nephews and nieces (he was especially close to Lisa and Laurie); and several honourary adoptees. He was predeceased by wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Pottie); his parents; sister, Elizabeth; brothers, Richard and Edward (infancy); great-grandchild, Atlas; son-in-law, Sherman; in-laws, Judy (MacDonald) and Ozzy Smith, Vivien (Pottie) Kruszewski, Aline (Cormier) Pottie, Huguette (LaCoste) Pottie.

Cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 am, Saturday, October 11, 2025 in St. Bernard Catholic Church, 251 Hwy 2, Enfield, with Father Gerald David presiding. A reception will follow in Enfield Fire Hall. Interment will be in St. Bernard Cemetery Columbarium. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Chalice Canada, or a charity of choice.

Ruth Marlene (Jennex) Buggie

Buggie, Ruth Marlene (Jennex) – Sadly, Ruth Marlene (Jennex) Buggie of Oyster Pond lost her 19-year battle with brain cancer on September 8, 2025, at the age of 56.

Ruth is survived by loving and devoted parents, John David Jennex and Marlene Leah Hazel (Arnold) Jennex; brothers, David (Charmaine) Jennex, Richard (Cheryl Bennett) Jennex, Paul (Jennifer Olson) Jennex; beloved daughters, Rhonda (Matthew Horton) Buggie, Amanda Buggie; grandsons, William Colp and Thomas Horton. She will be missed by her most special niece, Rory Jennex; step-nephew, Dustin (Sarah) Rudolph; special niece, Shawntelle (Chris Morgan) Rudolph; step-nephews, Romeo and Casy Rudolph; father-in-law, George Buggie; many special aunts, uncles and cousins in the Jeddore and Sambro areas.

She was predeceased by grandparents, John George Jennex and Mary Isabella (Arnold) Jennex.

Ruth worked at Dalmy’s clothing store and Memory Lane Heritage Village, and as a babysitter and school monitor.

A visitation will be held in Jeddore United Baptist Church, 8 West Jeddore Road on September 19, 2025, 1-1:45 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. with Reverend Aubrey Deslatte officiating. A reception will be held downstairs following the funeral. Burial will be in Oyster Pond Baptist Cemetery, 286 East Jeddore Road.

Martin Seymore MacKenzie

MacKenzie, Martin Seymore – With profound sadness, the family of Martin Seymore MacKenzie announce his peaceful passing in hospital on September 6, 2025, at the age of 69 as a result of complications with his heart.

Marty is survived by his partner, Betty Graham; daughters, Krystie MacKenzie and Sandra Hunton; sister, Kelly (MacKenzie) Crowe; brothers, Foster MacKenzie and Randy MacKenzie.

He was predeceased by his parents, Nina Lee and Foster Eaton MacKenzie; sisters, Deanna Fancy, Anne Langille; brothers, Glendon MacKenzie and Gregory MacKenzie.

Marty was born in Truro but left home at an early age to hitchhike to Ontario where he worked repairing cars. This inspired him to attend vocational school where he obtained his Red Seal in Auto Body Repairs. Following his return to Nova Scotia, the majority of his work years were spent and Nissan and Pye’s, from where he retired due to a failing heart condition; however, he continued to work out of his own garage at home for some years following.

Marty loved his time at Brule Beach with Betty where he spent his summers while sharing memories, and playing cards and pool for entertainment with friends. During his life, he made many friends and acquaintances who thought highly of his company while they enjoyed many laughs together. Everyone enjoyed his big smile – one of those ear-to-ear ones - he often wore.

Marty was a “fixer”, more than willing and able to work on anything mechanical in helping his friends and family to keep vehicles and other machines operating effectively. He also enjoyed his guitar which he had played for many years, following in his dad’s footsteps. One of his weekly highlights was his time spent at The Truro Horsemen’s Club or “The Wing”.

The family wants to extend a heart-felt thank you to staff on the ICU and Palliative Care wings of Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, all of whom treated him with the greatest of respect, care and dignity during his stay there.

As per Marty’s wishes, there will be no funeral or interment. He has been cremated and the disposition of his remains will be determined by the family at a later date.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in 102 Wing Royal Canadian Air Force.

Barbara Mary Power

Power, Barbara Mary – of Ship Harbour. It is with deep sadness and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Barbara Mary Power on September 6, 2025, aged 65, who passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family. She was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

Born in Sheet Harbour in 1960, Barbara lived a life of compassion, quiet strength, and deep devotion to her loved ones. She was the beloved wife of Randall Power, with whom she shared a life rich in love and partnership.

Barbara was a proud and nurturing mother to her four children: Stephen Power (Darlene), Allan Power (Heather), Selena Power (William), and Melissa Power (Michael). Her unwavering love and guidance shaped the lives of her children and continue to live on through them. She was also a deeply devoted grandmother to Ravenne Hull, Grace Power, and Elsie Webber, who were the light of her life. Her love for her grandchildren was boundless, and her legacy will live on in their hearts.

Barbara is predeceased by her loving parents, Frances and Allan Monk; and her sisters, Margaret Monk and Carol Gray.

She is lovingly remembered by her nephew, Victor Gray (Kim) and niece, Joanne Gray, both of whom held a special place in her heart. Barbara was not only a wonderful mother and grandmother, but also a caring aunt who extended her love and support to her extended family.

Barbara’s life was a quiet testament to kindness, strength, and generosity. Her home was always open, her heart always full, and her love knew no limits. She touched the lives of many with her warmth and compassion, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held in Jeddore United Baptist Church, Head of Jeddore at 2 p.m., on Friday, September 12, 2025 followed by a burial in Baptist Community Cemetery, East Jeddore. Family and friends are invited to attend and honour her memory together.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kidney Foundation.

Martha Augusta Gammell

Gammell, Martha Augusta – Age 78, of Dean, passed away September 1, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Dean, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Mona (Kindervater) Gammell.

Martha’s simplistic lifestyle made her the person she was. She was kind-hearted, generous to a fault and saw the best in everyone (until you crossed her). The church and family were the center of Martha’s life. She was always interested in what her nieces and nephews were doing and was more than willing to do something to “help the church”. Her friendly disposition made an impression on all who met her. The world would be better if everyone had a page out of Martha’s book.

She will be lovingly missed and always remembered by sisters, Shirley Barker, Frances Perrin, Wanda Smith; brother-in-law, Victor MacKinnon; sister-in-law, Nancy Gammell; 11 nieces, 10 nephews and their spouses; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Calvin, Wayne, Gordon and Terence; sisters, Elizabeth, Dorothy and Beverly; brothers-in-law, Bill Barker, Alvin Lemmon, Dave Perrin and Kennard Smith.

Visitation will be Thursday, 6-8 p.m. and funeral service Friday at 2 p.m., both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean with Rev. David LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke.

David "Dave" Vaughan Miller

Miller, David “Dave” Vaughan - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Miller on August 30, 2025, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Dave died of heart failure two weeks short of his 73rd birthday, following several years of ill health and a recent struggle with kidney stones.

Dave was born in Brookfield where he attended elementary school and developed a love for the outdoors and his first dog, Pixie. His family moved to Bedford in 1964. After high school, Dave attended Memorial University in Newfoundland, and then returned to Nova Scotia to begin a career in banking. This took him to New Brunswick and then to British Columbia, ending up as a bank manager before moving back to his beloved Nova Scotia. He eventually started up his own business with his wife, Jess, whom he met in BC and married in the Philippines. They settled in Shubenacadie.

Dave was a passionate Canadian and a true Nova Scotian. Apart from the outdoors and his dogs, Dave’s other passions were photography, playing his guitar, writing songs, and even recording them. Back in his beloved NS, Dave met up with a group of local musicians — they were the joy of his life. They practiced together weekly and played at many NS venues and community centres. He continued to play with this group of friends in and around Shubenacadie until just before his recent hospital visit.

Dave is survived by his wife, Jess; his daughter from his first marriage, Erin Miller, New Zealand; and his older sisters, Faye, Toronto; and Wendy, Windsor. He was predeceased by his parents, Ruth Miller (Weaver) and Floyd Miller; and his sisters, Barbara and Trish “Emma”.

The family would especially like to thank the nurses and doctors who gave Dave special care at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Gower Fiander

Gower James Fiander, 70, of Brookfield, passed away surrounded with love on August 29th, 2025. He was the son of Yvonne (Bragg) and William Fiander, and as one of 13 children, he was surrounded with love from the very beginning. Gower called many places in Nova Scotia home, but amongst the most memorable were the communities of Ferguson’s Cove, where he spent his early childhood; Sheet Harbour, through his adolescent years; Shelburne, where he met his loving wife, Cyndy; Sandy Point, where they brought their first born, Courtney, home as new parents; Stewiacke, where Andrew and Lauren joined the family; and Brookfield, where they built their family’s forever home. From the time Gower was young, he had clear aspirations for how he would spend his working life. Gower dedicated his life to others. He did this not only through being a devoted husband and father, but also putting the safety of others first as a member of the RCMP for 35 years. Gower set off to Regina in 1974 to begin his journey as an officer with his first assignment bringing him back to NS to the community of Inverness. He then served in Dartmouth and Yarmouth, and when Gower was posted to Shelburne a few years later, he was blessed with meeting the love of his life, Cyndy. The following years he was posted in Stewiacke, Bible Hill, Enfield and back to Dartmouth. His work later in his career led him to being an investigator with Operation Hope and a final assignment in the Casino Gaming Investigation Section. Gower took on many different roles in the force, making a lasting impact both seen and unseen.  While he was considered a hero by profession, he was the truest hero to those who mattered most to him, his family. Of all of his achievements, both work related and personal, he believed his lasting legacy would be his children and grandchildren. Following his retirement from the RCMP, Gower took on the role of Regional Manager of Corporate Security and Compliance for Casino Nova Scotia in both Halifax and Sydney locations for 7 years. When the time came to hang up his suit and tie, he was ready for retired life and filling his days with the things he enjoyed. Gower had many interests including vintage cars, researching his family history, moose hunting with his cousins in Newfoundland, corvette road trips with Cyndy, cottage life with his family, and boating along the Northumberland Strait. Gower was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and, in recent years, the Shriners, where he further dedicated his life to helping others. As a member of both Stewiacke Baptist Church and Brookfield Baptist Church, he served on the board of trustees, and was a valued member of the congregation. Gower is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cynthia (Hayden) Fiander; his children, Courtney (Chris) Day, Andrew (Sarah) Fiander, and Lauren (Chris) Bresowar; siblings, Judy (Doug) Dickinson, Cory (Joan) Fiander, Bertha Fiander, Gordon (Kellie) Fiander, Beverly (John) Covey, Melvin (Janette) Fiander, Deanna Fiander, and Leila Fiander. In addition, he is survived by sister-in-law, Dianne Fiander; former sister-in-law, Judy Fiander; brother-in-law, Doug Parsons; former brother-in-law, Andrew Cronkhite; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his pride and joy, his 7 grandchildren, Simon, Myles, Luke, Zoey, Nolan, Eliana and Micah. Many special friends enriched Gower’s life throughout the years, in the many communities and organizations where he served and lived.  Gower was predeceased by his parents, William and Yvonne (Bragg) Fiander; siblings, Paulette Parsons, William Fiander, Donald Fiander, Valerie Fiander and nephew, Troy Fiander. During his time in Palliative Care, he was blessed with many visits from retired RCMP members, Lodge brothers, old friends and family. All visits were special to Gower and brightened his days. His family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at CEHHC for their kindness and care during Gower’s time in hospital. A Celebration of Life for Gower will be held on Saturday, September 6th at 2pm in Groundswell Church, 759 Prince Street, Truro, NS, with a reception to follow. The family expresses gratitude to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative for their compassionate assistance with the cremation and committal arrangements. Memorial donations can be made in Gower’s memory to Brookfield Baptist Church or the Philae Shriners.

Barry Aldon Wallace

Wallace, Barry Aldon – It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Barry “Blister” Aldon Wallace, announce his passing at home on August 27, 2025 at 1:03 p.m. at the age of 69 after his fight with a glioblastoma brain tumor surrounded by his family.

Barry worked as a truck driver for 40 years with Elmsdale Landscaping where he also plowed snow in the winter and worked on the trucks in the garage.

In his younger years, Barry loved playing darts, crib, baseball, racing at Scotia Speedworld, watching Nascar on his 86-inch flat screen, as well as flying with Heltech fire crew putting out fires.

Barry had a heart of gold and kindness that knew no limits.

We, his wife and kids, will miss him beyond words, but take comfort in believing he is at peace without pain and is reunited with his family and friends who passed before him.

Over the years, Barry made many close friends and work family. Too many to list, but he loved you all dearly and you all know who you are.

Barry is survived by his wife, Lisa Wallace, whom he loved for 20 years before marrying her one month before he passed; children, Angie Hiltz (Matt Isnor), Lori Hiltz (Andrew Webber), Barry Hubley (Mandy Hubley), Kevin Pickles, Patrick Pickles (Jordyn Brine) and Sasha Pickles; siblings, Wade Wallace (June), Debbie Wallace (Ross), Sandra Wallace (Donnie); many nieces and nephews; and his 20 grandchildren whom he loved dearly and held a huge place in his heart.

Barry was predeceased by his grandparents, Isabel and Clarence Wallace and George and Pearl Phillips; parents, Aldon and Pauline Wallace; mother-in-law, Eva Maynard; son, Robert Butler; nephew, Walter Hunt Jr.; sisters, Sheila Wallace and Judy Hunt.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 13, 1-4 p.m. in Stewiacke Legion Branch 70, 299 George Street. All who knew and loved Barry are invited to attend.

The family would like to thank the VON, palliative care, CCA, physio and occupational therapy teams who helped and supported us through everything from the time he came home. We appreciate you all and want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Michael Laurie Hines

Hines, Michael Laurie – Age 39, of Chaswood, passed away in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

Born in IWK Hospital, Halifax – he was a son of Bayfield Hines and Wendy (Day) Hines, Chaswood. 

Surviving are Mike’s parents; brother, Stephen Hines; and his nephew, Hayden Hines, both residents of Lloydminster, Sask. Mike had many aunts, uncles, cousins, great cousins – too many to mention. He is also survived by honorary sister, Bri Johnson.

Mike loved to remember and share stories of how as a child his family made every effort to be sure he had the opportunity to drive the family farm tractors and drive the horses on the wagon with his uncle, Donnie and grandfather, Don Day. As a child he enjoyed wrestling with his cousin, Don; brother, Steve; and his honorary brothers, Jeff and Glen Higgins of Middle Musquodoboit. During those wrestling matches he felt he was a superhero like Hulk Hogan who he admired.

Mike came into this world fighting to survive. With a diagnosis of Spina Bifida he was told he might only live a short time but Mike proved everyone wrong. He lived a full 39 years. He graduated high school at MRHS, later moving to Halifax where he lived in The Home of Independent Living known as HIL, and finally moved into his own apartment in Halifax, where he lived the last few years. Thanks to Lee-Anne and Glen Lafosse and the staff of HIL.

After turning 39 and facing the big milestone birthday of 40, Mike decided to make a bucket list. Number one on his list was to go hunting on the family farm. He also looked forward to having a beer with his uncle, Donnie Day and his cousin, Kyle Hines, but unfortunately these things didn’t happen as Mike’s health declined before this wish could come true.

His final wish was to come home to the Musquodoboit Valley, where he could be with his family and friends during his final days. We are thankful for the staff at MVMH for making this possible. Thank you to all who were able to make time to visit him and to those who sent their thoughts and prayers.  Mike had tremendous respect for his care team at the QE2, especially Dr. Jack Rasmussen and nurse Elinor who spent many hours providing care to Mike.

Mike wasn’t afraid to die but he was definitely not ready to go. Mike faced many challenges throughout his life. He took on each and every one with determination and courage. He loved his family and friends so much that he asked for nothing other than to be with them during his final days.

Mike had many hobbies including gaming with his friends online, sitting to chat with his roommate, William and watching the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Although as siblings Mike and Stephen would squabble at times, his brother Steve was always his protector. Unfortunately, Steve couldn’t protect him from his final challenge.

Mike was always one to make the most of every challenge he faced. In his final days Mike spoke of how he looked forward to meeting his grandfather, Melvin Hines who he had never met, and to walk with him as well as his grandfather, Don Day and grandmothers, Helen Hines and Constance Day; aunt, Johanne; uncle, Larry; and cousins, Derek and Morgan. This seemed to give him great joy and peace of mind.

His family will be hosting a Celebration of Life for Michael on Saturday, Aug 30, 2025 between 2 – 6 p.m. in the home of Bayfield and Wendy Hines, 40 Urquharts Lane, Chaswood.

Pearl Kathleen (Hutt) Barbrick

Barbrick (Hutt), Pearl Kathleen – Age 94, of Truro and formerly of Shubenacadie, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.

Pearl was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She will be remembered for her ability to make and nurture friendships, reaching out through her care and involvement in the community. Whether serving with the Shubenacadie Legion, alongside her husband, Allan, or greeting neighbours with kindness, Pearl’s presence left a lasting mark on all who knew her. She also created many friendships and happy memories during her years at House of Hay, and later over a good game of cards with her friends in her Truro apartment, and her Away For the Day program at Wynn Park. Wherever she was, her warmth and laughter brightened the day.

Pearl loved life’s simple pleasures. She could often be found puttering in her yard, playing a lively game of cards, or stepping onto the dance floor with a sparkle in her eye. She delighted in sharing a laugh and always seemed to have a witty comment ready. Visitors to Pearl’s home never left hungry, often welcomed with a home-cooked meal and molasses cookies (or a biscuit or two).

Above all else, Pearl’s pride and legacy is her family. Each of them was a source of joy, and carries memories of her guidance and unconditional love. Pearl is survived by her children, Sheila (Jim) McMichael, Suzette Cameron, and Alana (Glenn) McCabe; grandchildren, Tracy (Craig), Cory (Lynette), Christian (Julie), Jaime (Adam), David (Danielle), and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Rylan, Pyper, Gabby, and Kohen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Bertha (Moore) Hutt; her beloved husband, Allan, with whom she shared so much of her life’s journey; siblings, Jean, Leland, Vincent, George, Dorothy, Hal, Effie, Irene, Bernard, Marshall, Sadie, Orrie, Elmer, Gerald, Kenneth; and son-in-law, Sid Cameron.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26 from 6 – 8 p.m., followed by a funeral service Wednesday, August 27 at 2 p.m., both in Shubenacadie United Church, 2869 Main Street, with Rev. Natalie Buchanan Rutherford officiating. Family, friends, and loved ones are invited to a reception after the service. A private family graveside service will follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Douglas Lowell MacBain

MacBain, Douglas Lowell – passed away on August 20, 2025.

Douglas Lowell MacBain was born in Meaghers Grant to Orrin and Alice MacBain.  He was a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His legacy will live on. 

Doug ran a general store in Meaghers Grant for over 30 years.  A community minded man, he volunteered in many capacities during his life including the Meaghers Grant Volunteer Fire Department, St. James United Church Board, Trustee at Musquodoboit Rural High School and Eastern Shore Memorial Hospital. 

Doug was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Muriel and Norma.  He is survived by his loving wife, Freda; his children, Wade, Elaine, Darcey and Angela (John). “Bubby” was cherished by his grandchildren, Brooke, Drew, Reid, Rhett, Matthew, Charmaine, Adam, Justin, Leah, Corinne and Alannah and eight great-grandchildren.

Doug had a love of sports and played hockey and ball for many years.  He seldom missed a Penquins or Jays game. 

In later years he moved to “The Condo” in Bedford where he met many new friends, from the walking “boys”, card players and his fish.  He had an active and happy retirement. 

He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

Burial will be held on the same date at the Meaghers Grant Cemetery at 2 p.m.
