Melvin Lorne Arnold Baker

Baker, Melvin Lorne Arnold - Age 80, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025 in Harbourview Lodge Continuing Care Centre, Sheet Harbour. He was a son of the late Everett ‘Arnold’ and Audrey ‘Laura’ Baker.

He is predeceased by his wife, Judith Rae Baker, married 56 years and his baby brother, Herbert.

He will be deeply missed and always loved by son, Raymond (Wendy); granddaughters, Shianne, Chelsey, Brandy and great-grandson Carlos ‘C-Ray’, all of East Jeddore.

Melvin began the workforce at Baker’s Point Fish Plant and then had a variety of jobs until settling with various fencing companies. He changed careers in 1985 when he was hired in Halifax at the Waegwoltic Club as maintenance man. Melvin retired after 25 years of service.

Melvin was a socially active man who enjoyed golf, baseball, hockey, deer and duck hunting, looked forward to his chats at local coffee shops and eating out for supper at least once a week. He was nicknamed the ‘road runner’ and when he became a grandad of teenage granddaughters his nickname changed to ‘grandad’s taxi’.

Melvin loved his precious granddaughters and never missed a Christmas concert, band concert, school play, Sunday school ceremony, girl guide ceremony or graduation. He was there for all their celebrations and supported them in any way he could. If they were selling tickets and cookies, he always bought lots.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday June 7, 2025, downstairs in Marine Drive Pentecostal Church from 2-4 p.m. Burial will follow in East Jeddore Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Scott Anderson.

The family thanks Northwood Homecare and Private Homecare providers, Cathy Pettipas and Charlene Pollett. Also, the doctors and nurses at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital. A special thanks to Harbourview Lodge Continuing Care Center staff. This was Melvin’s home away from home where he was treated like family by all staff. They provided phenomenal care to make him as comfortable as possible.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harbourview Lodge Continuing Care Centre. Arrangements are under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
