John Clarke Geddes

Geddes, John Clarke – Age 83 of Halfway Brook, passed away peacefully at home on October 10, 2025 with family beside him.

Born in Upper Stewiacke, he was a son of the late Elvin and Mary (Fulton) Geddes.

Johnny was always a dedicated worker, he worked at carpentry in his younger days. When he was 20 years old, he and four of his friends followed the young man’s dream to head west. So, off they went in a 1957 Ford. At first, he worked on a farm in Alberta, but in 1960 was homesick and headed back to Nova Scotia. His love of trucking took over and his first job was with C.E Fisher. Curtis Fisher was his mentor and his first job with him was throwing around milk cans, and later driving truck, which he did for 8 years. Then one day, he bought his own truck and hauled pulpwood for Jack Brown to Scott Paper. One truck was not enough, he took over the cattle hauling business, as well as pigs, and David Brown Tractors. John was not afraid of work. He also had truckers who hauled Christmas trees. He started Stewiacke Valley Trucking Ltd. and by now had dump trucks, backhoes, pulp trucks, and employed many men. His dream came true when Kenny Creelman came to ask him to haul a load of timbers to Shag Harbour. He hauled lumber for Marwood for over 20 years. He then turned the company over to his sons and drove for them. When he was semi-retired, his sons bought him a sawmill for a hobby. It became John’s Sawmill. Thanks to all the customers over the years and the many people who stopped by the mill.

In the winter months, he started card games in the garage with his retired buddies. He was a member of Middle Stewiacke United Church and Middle Stewiacke Bowling League. Every Thursday, he attended card parties at Middle Stewiacke Rec. Centre. He loved going to political meetings with Linda, music, and dancing. His garage was a gathering place for all.

He will always be loved and missed by his wife of 61 years, Linda (Suttis) Geddes; sons, Walter,  Fort MacMurray; David, Vanderhoof, B.C; Bobby (Anne), Vanderhoof, B.C; Mark, Halfway Brook; Quincy, Vanderhoof, B.C.; brother, Sinclair (Joyce), Otterbrook; grandchildren, Thomas, Clair, Margaret, Jackie, and Timmy; step-grandchildren, Steven, and Emily;  sisters-in-law, Ava and Mary Geddes, Joan Suttis; as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Roy and Ross.

Special thanks to Dr. Lorette and staff and VON for keeping John comfortable at home. Thanks to all who visited, called, and brought food. Many thanks to MacQuarries-Brookfield and The Home Care Centre for all they have done for us.

Shirley Ella Elizabeth Selena Jennings

Jennings, Shirley Ella Elizabeth Selena – Shirley Ella Elizabeth Selena Jennings passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025 at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and memories that will be cherished forever.

Shirley lived a life stitched together with kindness, generosity, and just the right dash of mischief. She loved cooking, knitting, quilting, baking, and never met a puzzle she couldn’t solve. Her door was always open, her kettle always on, and if you happened to wander into her home, whether it be a friend, family, or friendly stranger, you’d never leave hungry.

Sweet on the outside but known for the occasional cheeky comment that could make even the most serious of guests burst into laughter, Shirley truly had a wit like no other. She was the queen of shopping for sales, only to give most of it away because for her, joy was found in giving, not keeping.

Throughout her life, Shirley shared a special bond with her dogs, each one holding a cherished place in her heart. Her love for her dogs was another reflection of her kind and nurturing spirit - she cared deeply and loved unconditionally.

For nearly seventy years, she found peace watching hummingbirds and admiring the view from her living room window, a special place that witnessed a lifetime of family, laughter, and love.

Shirley was a woman of tenderness, generosity, and quiet strength. A gentle spirit with a wonderful sense of humour, she will be remembered for the love and warmth she brought to every life she touched.

She leaves behind her loving children, Janet (Warren), Chrisie (Mark), Tammy (John), Patricia (Paul), and Tim (Kim); grandchildren, Colin, Alicia, Mark, Justin, Selena, Brandon, Christopher, Paisley, Paige, Brandi, Johnny, Shawn, and Matthew; 24 great-grandchildren, 7 great-great-grandchildren; siblings, David, Harold, Jim, Barbara, and Bonnie; and her dearest friend, Carol Blakeney.

She is reunited with her husband, Allan “Bud" Jennings; mother, Hazel Clarke; daughter, Sherry Faulkner; son, Wyman Jennings; son-in-law, Warren; grandson, Samuel; sister, Betty; and brothers, Howard and Sonny.

Cremation has taken place. Graveside service will take place October 20, 2025 at 1 p.m. in St. John Anglican Church Cemetery, 39 Monument Loop, Head of Jeddore, immediately followed by a Celebration of Life downstairs in Jeddore United Baptist Church.

Lorraine Lena (Laing) Pottie

Pottie, Lorraine Lena (Laing) – age 85 of Oakfield, passed away after a brief battle with pneumonia on August 7, 2025 with both daughters by her side. Born in Sherbrooke NS, she was a daughter of the late Edith (Cook) and John Laing.

Edith passed away when Mom was two during which time her father was in a POW camp in Hong Kong.  Her grandmother, Bertha Cook insisted the children (five, under the age of seven) not be separated and she along with her husband, Walter took them in as their own.  She was raised with them alongside many aunts and uncles.  Her Aunt Marion Jordon lived next door and played a big part in the children’s upbringing.

At seventeen Mom moved to Halifax to work.  She spent her early years working at The Halifax Pathology Lab, and The NS Teacher’s Union.  Later she was a printing press operator at Nova Scotia Light and Power where she met and married our father, Gerald Edward Pottie.  They built a home together in Oakfield on Grand Lake and raised their two daughters.

Mom enjoyed gardening, walking in nature, baking, reading, sewing, knitting and playing cards. She donated over 100 preemie outfits to the IWK for which she was awarded. She volunteered for numerous community events and most recently with The Ubuntu Grannies.

She loved antiques, auctions and in later years finding that perfect item at local thrift stores. A puzzle was usually found on her table and if you didn’t work on that during a visit then a good game of cards was in order. Reading was a love she passed on to us and the quest for knowledge and asking why. There was nothing that she wouldn’t try to do herself and should we say she shouldn’t be doing something, well she had no trouble telling us that she was more than capable.

She was the very definition of mom and family to her was everything. Her love for children started early with young cousins and her nieces and nephews. Unable to pronounce Lorraine, the name Rannie was born and a name which she would be affectionately know by many children including her great-grandchildren, Riley and Rory.

She is survived by her children, Tammy Pottie and Lorrie Anne (Brian) Foley; grandchildren, Alycia Pottie (Zack Thomson) and Amber; and great-grandchildren, Riley and Rory.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; sisters, Lillian and Lorna; and brothers, Lloyd and Jackie.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.  As per Moms wishes she did not want a funeral.  Mom and Dad will be laid to rest in Sherbrooke with her mom.

Charles James "Jim" White

It is with a deep and enduring sadness that the family announce the passing of Jim White husband, father, brother, and grandfather. With that sadness, we also acknowledge a quiet relief that he was finally given sweet release of his soul from his earthbound body. His spirit endured to the end but his body failed him a little more each day. He passed peacefully in his sleep on September 24th, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre. At the time he was cared for by the kindest and most gentle caregivers and Palliative Care Nurses on the third floor. Our deepest appreciation to those who cared for him in his last days. Thank you to the Maitland and Noel First Responders for their many trips and the VON who came to the house. Through his illness, he never complained. He always had a smile and a smart remark for all who cared for him at home or in the hospital, especially his favorite daughter- in- law, Tobi. He leaves behind his wife, Agnes of 51 years; children, Malcolm Mulligan (Debbie), Scott White (Tobi), Carla Patterson (Jeff); granddaughter, Charlie Patterson; brother, Bob White (Linda). He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy (Faulkner) Lee, and his youngest child, Jason Matthew White, age 23. A grief he carried with him till the end. Through the years he was always remembered by Jason’s girlfriend, Danielle and their large group of friends.Thank you to the Cox Family, the best neighbours. They came to his rescue many times when he got his tractor stuck. They also gave Scott permission to mow a path his Dad could use by himself at first and at the end be wheeled through. He believed he lived in the most beautiful place on earth and amongst the best people. He also had a lifelong bond with the animals that walked alongside him – his horses and his dogs. Whether working in his vegetable garden, having coffee with friends, going on trail rides with Ryley, Mary, Christie and others, or tending to his animals, he lived with a quiet pride and love for the simple but meaningful things. All friends and neighbours are welcome to join us in saying a final goodbye to Jim. A gathering will be held in 9 Church Hill, Maitland, on Saturday, October 11, from 1-3 p.m. Stop by and share a beverage and snack. This seems a very appropriate gesture as he loved his coffee group.
