Martha Augusta Gammell

Gammell, Martha Augusta – Age 78, of Dean, passed away September 1, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Born in Dean, she was a daughter of the late Cecil and Mona (Kindervater) Gammell.

Martha’s simplistic lifestyle made her the person she was. She was kind-hearted, generous to a fault and saw the best in everyone (until you crossed her). The church and family were the center of Martha’s life. She was always interested in what her nieces and nephews were doing and was more than willing to do something to “help the church”. Her friendly disposition made an impression on all who met her. The world would be better if everyone had a page out of Martha’s book.

She will be lovingly missed and always remembered by sisters, Shirley Barker, Frances Perrin, Wanda Smith; brother-in-law, Victor MacKinnon; sister-in-law, Nancy Gammell; 11 nieces, 10 nephews and their spouses; as well as several great-nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by brothers, Calvin, Wayne, Gordon and Terence; sisters, Elizabeth, Dorothy and Beverly; brothers-in-law, Bill Barker, Alvin Lemmon, Dave Perrin and Kennard Smith.

Visitation will be Thursday, 6-8 p.m. and funeral service Friday at 2 p.m., both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean with Rev. David LeBlanc officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Upper Stewiacke.

Memorial donations may be made to Sharon Presbyterian Church, c/o Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, 8741 Highway 224, Upper Musquodoboit, NS B0N 2M0.

Many thanks to the Upper Musquodoboit Volunteer Fire Department, EHS, Emergency Room staff, staff of Intermediate Care Unit and Palliative Care Unit of CEHHC for the love, respect and care shown to Martha. Thanks also to those who visited the hospital during her short stay.

Gower Fiander

Gower James Fiander, 70, of Brookfield, passed away surrounded with love on August 29th, 2025. He was the son of Yvonne (Bragg) and William Fiander, and as one of 13 children, he was surrounded with love from the very beginning. Gower called many places in Nova Scotia home, but amongst the most memorable were the communities of Ferguson’s Cove, where he spent his early childhood; Sheet Harbour, through his adolescent years; Shelburne, where he met his loving wife, Cyndy; Sandy Point, where they brought their first born, Courtney, home as new parents; Stewiacke, where Andrew and Lauren joined the family; and Brookfield, where they built their family’s forever home. From the time Gower was young, he had clear aspirations for how he would spend his working life. Gower dedicated his life to others. He did this not only through being a devoted husband and father, but also putting the safety of others first as a member of the RCMP for 35 years. Gower set off to Regina in 1974 to begin his journey as an officer with his first assignment bringing him back to NS to the community of Inverness. He then served in Dartmouth and Yarmouth, and when Gower was posted to Shelburne a few years later, he was blessed with meeting the love of his life, Cyndy. The following years he was posted in Stewiacke, Bible Hill, Enfield and back to Dartmouth. His work later in his career led him to being an investigator with Operation Hope and a final assignment in the Casino Gaming Investigation Section. Gower took on many different roles in the force, making a lasting impact both seen and unseen.  While he was considered a hero by profession, he was the truest hero to those who mattered most to him, his family. Of all of his achievements, both work related and personal, he believed his lasting legacy would be his children and grandchildren. Following his retirement from the RCMP, Gower took on the role of Regional Manager of Corporate Security and Compliance for Casino Nova Scotia in both Halifax and Sydney locations for 7 years. When the time came to hang up his suit and tie, he was ready for retired life and filling his days with the things he enjoyed. Gower had many interests including vintage cars, researching his family history, moose hunting with his cousins in Newfoundland, corvette road trips with Cyndy, cottage life with his family, and boating along the Northumberland Strait. Gower was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge and, in recent years, the Shriners, where he further dedicated his life to helping others. As a member of both Stewiacke Baptist Church and Brookfield Baptist Church, he served on the board of trustees, and was a valued member of the congregation. Gower is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cynthia (Hayden) Fiander; his children, Courtney (Chris) Day, Andrew (Sarah) Fiander, and Lauren (Chris) Bresowar; siblings, Judy (Doug) Dickinson, Cory (Joan) Fiander, Bertha Fiander, Gordon (Kellie) Fiander, Beverly (John) Covey, Melvin (Janette) Fiander, Deanna Fiander, and Leila Fiander. In addition, he is survived by sister-in-law, Dianne Fiander; former sister-in-law, Judy Fiander; brother-in-law, Doug Parsons; former brother-in-law, Andrew Cronkhite; as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his pride and joy, his 7 grandchildren, Simon, Myles, Luke, Zoey, Nolan, Eliana and Micah. Many special friends enriched Gower’s life throughout the years, in the many communities and organizations where he served and lived.  Gower was predeceased by his parents, William and Yvonne (Bragg) Fiander; siblings, Paulette Parsons, William Fiander, Donald Fiander, Valerie Fiander and nephew, Troy Fiander. During his time in Palliative Care, he was blessed with many visits from retired RCMP members, Lodge brothers, old friends and family. All visits were special to Gower and brightened his days. His family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at CEHHC for their kindness and care during Gower’s time in hospital. A Celebration of Life for Gower will be held on Saturday, September 6th at 2pm in Groundswell Church, 759 Prince Street, Truro, NS, with a reception to follow. The family expresses gratitude to Arimathea Funeral Cooperative for their compassionate assistance with the cremation and committal arrangements. Memorial donations can be made in Gower’s memory to Brookfield Baptist Church or the Philae Shriners.

Barry Aldon Wallace

Wallace, Barry Aldon – It is with profound sadness that we, the family of Barry “Blister” Aldon Wallace, announce his passing at home on August 27, 2025 at 1:03 p.m. at the age of 69 after his fight with a glioblastoma brain tumor surrounded by his family.

Barry worked as a truck driver for 40 years with Elmsdale Landscaping where he also plowed snow in the winter and worked on the trucks in the garage.

In his younger years, Barry loved playing darts, crib, baseball, racing at Scotia Speedworld, watching Nascar on his 86-inch flat screen, as well as flying with Heltech fire crew putting out fires.

Barry had a heart of gold and kindness that knew no limits.

We, his wife and kids, will miss him beyond words, but take comfort in believing he is at peace without pain and is reunited with his family and friends who passed before him.

Over the years, Barry made many close friends and work family. Too many to list, but he loved you all dearly and you all know who you are.

Barry is survived by his wife, Lisa Wallace, whom he loved for 20 years before marrying her one month before he passed; children, Angie Hiltz (Matt Isnor), Lori Hiltz (Andrew Webber), Barry Hubley (Mandy Hubley), Kevin Pickles, Patrick Pickles (Jordyn Brine) and Sasha Pickles; siblings, Wade Wallace (June), Debbie Wallace (Ross), Sandra Wallace (Donnie); many nieces and nephews; and his 20 grandchildren whom he loved dearly and held a huge place in his heart.

Barry was predeceased by his grandparents, Isabel and Clarence Wallace and George and Pearl Phillips; parents, Aldon and Pauline Wallace; mother-in-law, Eva Maynard; son, Robert Butler; nephew, Walter Hunt Jr.; sisters, Sheila Wallace and Judy Hunt.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 13, 1-4 p.m. in Stewiacke Legion Branch 70, 299 George Street. All who knew and loved Barry are invited to attend.

The family would like to thank the VON, palliative care, CCA, physio and occupational therapy teams who helped and supported us through everything from the time he came home. We appreciate you all and want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, the family and Barry would like donations made to Brain Cancer Canada.

Don’t cry for me.
I will be okay.
Heaven is my home now,
and this is where I’ll stay.

Don’t cry for me.
I’m where I belong.
I want you to be happy
and try to stay strong.

Don’t cry for me.
It was just my time,
but I will see you someday
on the other side.

Don’t cry for me.
I am not alone.
The angels are with me
to welcome me home.

Don’t cry for me,
for I have no fear.
All my pain is gone,
and Jesus took my tears.

Don’t cry for me.
This is not the end.
I’ll be waiting here for you
when we meet again.

Michael Laurie Hines

Hines, Michael Laurie – Age 39, of Chaswood, passed away in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Unit on Saturday, August 23, 2025.

Born in IWK Hospital, Halifax – he was a son of Bayfield Hines and Wendy (Day) Hines, Chaswood.

Surviving are Mike’s parents; brother, Stephen Hines; and his nephew, Hayden Hines, both residents of Lloydminster, Sask. Mike had many aunts, uncles, cousins, great cousins – too many to mention. He is also survived by honorary sister, Bri Johnson.

Mike loved to remember and share stories of how as a child his family made every effort to be sure he had the opportunity to drive the family farm tractors and drive the horses on the wagon with his uncle, Donnie and grandfather, Don Day. As a child he enjoyed wrestling with his cousin, Don; brother, Steve; and his honorary brothers, Jeff and Glen Higgins of Middle Musquodoboit. During those wrestling matches he felt he was a superhero like Hulk Hogan who he admired.

Mike came into this world fighting to survive. With a diagnosis of Spina Bifida he was told he might only live a short time but Mike proved everyone wrong. He lived a full 39 years. He graduated high school at MRHS, later moving to Halifax where he lived in The Home of Independent Living known as HIL, and finally moved into his own apartment in Halifax, where he lived the last few years. Thanks to Lee-Anne and Glen Lafosse and the staff of HIL.

After turning 39 and facing the big milestone birthday of 40, Mike decided to make a bucket list. Number one on his list was to go hunting on the family farm. He also looked forward to having a beer with his uncle, Donnie Day and his cousin, Kyle Hines, but unfortunately these things didn’t happen as Mike’s health declined before this wish could come true.

His final wish was to come home to the Musquodoboit Valley, where he could be with his family and friends during his final days. We are thankful for the staff at MVMH for making this possible. Thank you to all who were able to make time to visit him and to those who sent their thoughts and prayers.  Mike had tremendous respect for his care team at the QE2, especially Dr. Jack Rasmussen and nurse Elinor who spent many hours providing care to Mike.

Mike wasn’t afraid to die but he was definitely not ready to go. Mike faced many challenges throughout his life. He took on each and every one with determination and courage. He loved his family and friends so much that he asked for nothing other than to be with them during his final days.

Mike had many hobbies including gaming with his friends online, sitting to chat with his roommate, William and watching the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Although as siblings Mike and Stephen would squabble at times, his brother Steve was always his protector. Unfortunately, Steve couldn’t protect him from his final challenge.

Mike was always one to make the most of every challenge he faced. In his final days Mike spoke of how he looked forward to meeting his grandfather, Melvin Hines who he had never met, and to walk with him as well as his grandfather, Don Day and grandmothers, Helen Hines and Constance Day; aunt, Johanne; uncle, Larry; and cousins, Derek and Morgan. This seemed to give him great joy and peace of mind.

His family will be hosting a Celebration of Life for Michael on Saturday, Aug 30, 2025 between 2 – 6 p.m. in the home of Bayfield and Wendy Hines, 40 Urquharts Lane, Chaswood.

All are welcome.

Pearl Kathleen (Hutt) Barbrick

Barbrick (Hutt), Pearl Kathleen – Age 94, of Truro and formerly of Shubenacadie, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025 surrounded by her loving family.

Pearl was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She will be remembered for her ability to make and nurture friendships, reaching out through her care and involvement in the community. Whether serving with the Shubenacadie Legion, alongside her husband, Allan, or greeting neighbours with kindness, Pearl’s presence left a lasting mark on all who knew her. She also created many friendships and happy memories during her years at House of Hay, and later over a good game of cards with her friends in her Truro apartment, and her Away For the Day program at Wynn Park. Wherever she was, her warmth and laughter brightened the day.

Pearl loved life’s simple pleasures. She could often be found puttering in her yard, playing a lively game of cards, or stepping onto the dance floor with a sparkle in her eye. She delighted in sharing a laugh and always seemed to have a witty comment ready. Visitors to Pearl’s home never left hungry, often welcomed with a home-cooked meal and molasses cookies (or a biscuit or two).

Above all else, Pearl’s pride and legacy is her family. Each of them was a source of joy, and carries memories of her guidance and unconditional love. Pearl is survived by her children, Sheila (Jim) McMichael, Suzette Cameron, and Alana (Glenn) McCabe; grandchildren, Tracy (Craig), Cory (Lynette), Christian (Julie), Jaime (Adam), David (Danielle), and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Aidan, Rylan, Pyper, Gabby, and Kohen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, Howard and Bertha (Moore) Hutt; her beloved husband, Allan, with whom she shared so much of her life’s journey; siblings, Jean, Leland, Vincent, George, Dorothy, Hal, Effie, Irene, Bernard, Marshall, Sadie, Orrie, Elmer, Gerald, Kenneth; and son-in-law, Sid Cameron.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26 from 6 – 8 p.m., followed by a funeral service Wednesday, August 27 at 2 p.m., both in Shubenacadie United Church, 2869 Main Street, with Rev. Natalie Buchanan Rutherford officiating. Family, friends, and loved ones are invited to a reception after the service. A private family graveside service will follow.

Barry Holland Thomas

Passed away August 12, 2025, age 86. Barry is survived by children, Helen Zebedee (William) and Simon Thomas (Karina); and grandchildren, Vivian and Brock Thomas.  He was predeceased by spouse, Anne Thomas (Walker); parents, Cecil and Kathleen (Blair) Thomas; and brother, Derek Thomas (Margaret). Barry’s formative years at the Friends’ School in Lancaster, England fostered his love of science and introduced him to Quakerism.  He obtained a doctorate in Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Liverpool, where he also taught.  He met and married high school teacher Anne Walker, and they moved to the Ottawa area with baby Helen, with Simon born a year later. Barry worked for Health Canada for thirty years, first in drug interactions, later in drinking water and air quality.  He published over 150 scientific papers and continued to take on consulting work after retiring and moving to Nova Scotia.  He was instrumental in the creation of the Drinking Water Materials Safety Act and in banning sulfur in gasoline in Canada, which was later adopted in many other countries and in WHO guidelines.  Barry also was an active volunteer, as a trustee for Canadian Yearly Meeting (Quakers) and other roles, on the executive of the International Society for Toxicology, and in the Tangier Gold Mine Historical Society. Anne and Barry had their dream home built in Tangier, Nova Scotia for their retirement years, featuring passive solar construction and ocean views.  Unfortunately, Anne’s declining health meant that they could not stay in a rural area with limited services, and in 2017 they moved to Dartmouth, close to Helen and Bill.  Within a year of Anne’s passing in 2020, Barry was diagnosed with mixed dementia, needing increasing levels of care at Parkland at the Lakes.  He enjoyed reading Scientific American, the Guardian Weekly and the local paper, as well as watching the weather and comings and goings outside his window.  He looked forward to twice-weekly visits from Helen and annual visits from Simon and family, as well as news of Vivian and Brock, who are both engineering students at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

As per his wishes, Barry’s remains have been cremated, and no funeral service will be held.  A memorial meeting will be held in the manner of Friends at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lifewater Canada or the Nova Scotia Nature Trust.

Dale Max McMullin

loving memory of Dale Max (Uncle Dale) McMullin. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dale McMullin, who left us on August 11 2025 at the age of 76. Born in Elmsvale, Dale grew up with a deep love for family, friends, and life’s simple joys. He had a remarkable way of making those around him feel valued – whether through his quick wit, a helping hand and the countless wise tales he would share. Dale was passionate about the outdoors from fishing and hunting. Dale loved spending quality time with his two nieces who he had a special bond with from the day he was given the title of being an Uncle. Dale spent many years working on a dairy farm, which he loved. You could often find Dale at the Saturday Jamborees where he loved to listen to fiddle and classic music.  He is survived by his loving sisters, Dorothy (Johnny) and Paulette; his brothers, Fredrick and Dana (Theresa); and his cherished special nieces, Andrea and Morgan; many nieces and nephews; and special extended family, Roxanne Sutherland and Paulette Desgagne.  Dale was predeceased by his father, Wilson McMullin; his mother, Lillian Isabelle McMullin; his brother in infancy; his sister, Leona; his brothers, Richard “Ricky” and David. Gloria Jean (Wirrell) St. Onge

St. Onge, Gloria Jean (Wirrell) - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dearly loved daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Gloria Jean (Wirrell) St.Onge at the age of 84 on August 3, 2025.

Born in Halifax, she was the eldest of two girls, just two years older than her sister, Francine.

Upon completion of High School Mom went to Miss Murphy’s Business College. She then worked for Nova Scotia Light & Power where she balanced the accounting system which was quite a feat, both physically and mentally in those days. Mom’s career was cut short when she met the love of her life, Maurice. They married in 1959 and the first of four children arrived in 1960. While raising her kids Mom spent a number of years supporting them as they played hockey, figure skated, took swimming lessons, tennis lessons, played lacrosse and baseball. When MicMac Mall opened in 1973 Mom started working part time at Simpson Sears in the hardware department and thoroughly loved her job. Mom liked to keep busy and when Dad built our home in Lower Sackville she was there to help. Her gardening skills were second to none. Throughout the years she maintained their properties so beautifully that a real estate company took photos to use in their advertising. She loved decorating and her sewing skills were amazing. She loved crafts especially crochet, knitting and ceramics. Upon the arrival of her first Grandchild, Mom used her newest skill of cross stitching and began to make Christmas stockings for the entire family. She also completed many gorgeous cross stitched artwork pieces that hold special memories. Mom babysat many kids and thoroughly enjoyed when she was able to care for her grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her loving husband of 63 years, Maurice.

She is survived by her sons, Rene, Andre (Jeannette), Marc (Susan); daughter, Lisa (Heith) Klaassen; grandchildren, Kaleigh, Steven, David, Jessica, Craig, Amanda, Peter, Zachary, their partners; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mom loved her family and she appreciated their love and support.

Her family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at both the Dartmouth General and Twin Oaks Memorial Hospitals, and the Continuing Care Nurses. A very special thank you to our dear friend Bine who was a great help to both of our parents; and a very special thank you to Cindy who was so amazing assisting Mom and taking great care when we needed help. We’d like to acknowledge Cindy for putting up a great fight playing scrabble, get out the book, that’s not a word, ha!

Mom has requested that, in lieu of a funeral, her family gets together, shares some stories and great memories.

Cremation has taken place.

William "Bill" Eugene Brenton

With great sadness, we announce the passing of our Dad, William “Bill” Eugene Brenton, age 79, in the early morning of July 30th, 2025. Thank you to the family, friends, and medical staff who surrounded him with so much love in those final moments.

Dad was born in Halifax, and lived in East Stewiacke his entire life, but he was no stranger to other parts of the province, mainly the Northumberland Shoreline and the Cabot Trail.

While raising a dynamic family, Dad worked as a skilled carpenter locally, and for many years as woodsman for Scott Paper Ltd. Sadly, Dad and Mom had lost their first child at birth, yet that did not deter them from quickly adopting, fostering, and having two children of their own. They did not even hesitate when it came to also raising two more nieces in order to keep our family intact.

All of us fit like pieces of a puzzle - then and now - and Dad dared anyone to question the intricacies of our family. Dad’s love for all of his children and grandchildren was profound, and there were no limits when it came to our friends, spouses, or neighbors. His bonds were for life.

Dad learned in his early 50s that he had serious cardiac issues, yet he never let that stop him from enjoying life to the fullest. He always managed to find a Legion dance, a scenic trail, a campground near the beach, a Bluegrass festival, a racetrack, or an antique shop in some other county. Nothing got in the way of Dad visiting his favorite beaches most of the year, keeping in touch with his family and friends faithfully, and making sure to loop around the Cabot Trail every fall with his only son, Kelly.

Most recently, Dad was spending his days creating adventures with his great-grandson, Greyson who has shared some of “Gramps” favorite things: visiting the beach in Caribou, Pictou County; eating peanut butter by the spoonful; keeping up with the news and obituaries; enjoying breakfast at Robin’s; visiting historic places like the Sutherland Steam Mill and Balmoral Grist Mill.

All of us kids looked forward to these same experiences with Dad. Although he was typically quiet, as soon as the tires hit the pavement, out came all the wise tales. Each of us got to hear our own special anecdotes of days gone by, and sometimes Dad would share versions of stories with all of us knowing we would compare them later. These are the memories that we will carry forward in order to keep him in our hearts forever.

Dad is survived by his oldest sibling, Gwen (Barry) Baker, and his youngest brother, Lee (Shirley) Brenton; his children, Carolyn (Derrick) Higgins, Kelly (Margie) Brenton, Jo-Ellen (John) Strickland, Wendy Brenton, Jennifer (Jay) Plunkett; his grandchildren, Amie, DJ, Santana, Megan, Laura, Michael, Katelyn, Brianna; his great-grandchildren; his nieces and nephews; his Brenton and Carter cousins throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick; and so many special friends. Dad loved all of his family and friends fiercely; he always had a way with the people he encountered.

Dad was predeceased by his parents Keith and Audrey (Carter) Brenton; his infant brother, Malcolm; his oldest brother, Robert (Bob); his wife of 25 years, Catherine (Kennedy) Brenton; their infant son, Mark William; his brother-in-law, Barry Baker; and his niece, Tracy Brenton.

Dad’s final act of generosity was to donate his body to Dalhousie University for medical study. Our family will share details at a later date for a small memorial to honor Dad’s life.

Jean will be sadly missed by her children, Heather Salsman, Halifax; Rebecca Colborne, Fredericton, N.B.; Robert Salsman, Truro; Mark Hamilton, Brookfield; Scott Hamilton, Toronto; and their spouses and partners. She is also mourned by nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

As well as her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Rev. Lloyd Salsman; son, Michael; second husband, Donald Hamilton; brothers, Gerald, Carl, Keith, Donald and Roy Cooke; and several brothers- and sisters-in-law.

Jean was a faithful churchgoer and served on several United Church of Canada committees at the national level. She loved gardening, and always had a garden where she lived, whether in Tatamagouche, Truro, or Brookfield. When she wasn’t confronting her nemesis (goutweed), she could usually be found stretched out on the couch with a murder mystery, doing a New York Times crossword (in pen), or playing trivia games with her friends and family.

Jean spent her last years in The Magnolia Continuing Care Community, Enfield, where she received excellent care, often mentioning how happy she was in her later years. She died peacefully in her sleep on July 23, 2025.

A memorial service for Jean will be held in Knox United Church, Brookfield on Friday, August 8th at 2 p.m. All welcome.

Wayne Arthur Fredericks

Fredericks, Wayne Arthur - It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Arthur Fredericks on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, in Dartmouth General Hospital, surrounded by family at the age of 81.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Paula Crawford (Philip), Dawn Forrest (Sheldon), and Dwayne (Jessica); grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah), Jocelyn (Nina), Ashley (Jesse), Devin, Tyler (Natalie), Hailey, Sophia, and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ava, Carter, and Ross. Dad is also survived by his brothers, Harvey (Debbie), Robbie; brother-in-law, Charles Manthorne; sisters-in-law, Arlene Fredericks and Maxine Duchesne (Michael); and many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife, Lorraine (Pettipas); his parents, Arthur and Alicia (Gibbons) Fredericks; brothers, Irvin, Ray (Kathryn), Ralph, Lorne (Rita), Clifford, Edward; sisters, Gloria Manthorne, Bernice (George) Deal, Stella Hebb; in-laws, Earl and Evelyn Pettipas; and many other dear family members.

Dad grew up in Bedford and often reminisced of childhood in a large and lively family.  He left school at an early age, but was very proud to have went on to become a sheet metal worker and member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 409.  Dad would often point out buildings where he had worked, each with a little story making it come alive as though it were yesterday.   In the early 1960’s Dad met, and soon after married mom and moved to East Chezzetcook where they built a life full of love and laughter together.  Mom and Dad enjoyed camping, playing cards and going to community dances together.  Dad especially enjoyed playing crib often times winning, but winning humbly.  He enjoyed Sunday suppers with family and seems no matter where he was lately, Sundays were reserved for supper at Dawn’s.  If you met Dad, you would know why we light-heartedly called him W5.  There were never too many questions, and he was quick to learn everything there was to know about everyone making a connection in some fashion.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, from 1–3 p.m. in Chezzetcook and District Lions Community Centre, 89 East Chezzetcook Road, Head of Chezzetcook, NS B0J 2L0.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses at Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital and Dartmouth General Hospital. A special thank you to the Palliative Care Unit at Dartmouth General for their exceptional care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Diabetes Association, Canadian Cancer Society, Twin Oaks/Birches Health Care Foundation, Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.

Wendy Marilyn McCorkill

McCorkill, Wendy Marilyn – Age 80 of Nine Mile River, passed away July 23, 2025 in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro.

Up until the last month and a bit, she was a road running firecracker. She was witty with a hint of sarcasm, stubborn, lovingly kind and had the best giggly laugh. She ALWAYS had her hair coiffed just so, sporting a perfectly matching and colorful outfit with coordinating jewellery, nails and lipstick.

She was a long-standing member of Nine Mile River United Church and dedicated Trustee of Nine Mile River Community Hall. Wendy thoroughly enjoyed spending her time volunteering at many community events including church suppers and teas, kids Christmas parties and tree lighting, Wednesday night Bingo and senior lunches at Superstore. She loved going for breakfast with her friends everyday and weekly TOPS meetings.

Wendy spent several years working at Border Brokers and Livingston, but her favorite job was being 2nd Mom to her “kids” – first to Wendy, Brandon, Todd and Troy Matheson and then to Justin and Morgan Miller.

Wendy is survived by sister, Sheila Ross; brother, Brian McCorkill; sister, Linda (Fulton) Killen; sister-in-law, Sandra Mallard; nieces and nephews, Annette, Jamie, Tami, Jennifer, Scott and Jessica; several great-nieces and nephews.

We all live in peace and love knowing her and Raymond are tearing up the dance floor together once again.

Cremation has taken place.

William "Bill" Gordon Parks

Parks, William “Bill” Gordon - passed away July 18, 2025, at the age of 77. Known by several different monikers, Bill, Billy or The Billy Bob, he left a lasting impression on all who met him with his unique outlook on life and sense of humour.

He was born the fourth of five sons, in Kemptville, Ontario and grew up in Ontario before moving to Nova Scotia as a teenager. He was predeceased by his mother, Hazel (Maybee); father, Douglas; and his brother, David. He is survived by his children, James “Jim Willie” (Omi) and Margaret “Maggie” (Shannon); grandchildren, Alexander and Brianna; and brothers, Ronald, John and Alan.

Bill graduated from Dalhousie University with a mining engineering degree, and then proceeded to work as a mining engineer in northern Ontario, North West Territories and Cape Breton. After two of his brothers moved to Upper Stewiacke, he followed shortly thereafter and eventually started his own business building log homes, including his own in Eastville.

Bill was a well-liked member of the Upper Stewiacke community, a nice man that rarely, if ever, had a bad word to say about anyone. Over the years he was involved in several different organizations in the community including the Upper Stewiacke Volunteer Fire Department, United Church and Masonic Hall. One might not expect it from his often quiet and reserved nature, but he was also involved in dinner theater where he would showcase his creative duct tape skills in his portrayal of Red from the Red Green Show.

He loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing in Deyarmond Lake, canoeing on the Stewiacke River and working in the garden. His skills as a gardener and with preserves were renowned with Billy’s Dilly Beans being particularly sought after. He was always up to have a good time with his friends at the “board meetings” and camp trips. He wasn’t a fan of the cold though and enjoyed spending winters in Florida fishing, kayaking and golfing when the opportunity arose with his cousin, Ross and brother, Ron.

Towards the end of his life, he moved to Antigonish to be closer to his daughter and even though he only lived in his new apartment for a few months he made a strong impression on his new neighbors setting up a bird feeder and planting onions in the raised bed in the courtyard.

One thing you can say about Bill is that he lived his life the way he wanted to and even if his opinions and lifestyle choices may have erred on the side of eccentric more often than not, it was never in a way that pushed others away. He will remain a character that those fortunate enough to have met him won’t soon forget.

The family would like to thank the VON and the Palliative Care team at St. Martha’s Regional Hospital for all their compassion, care and support.

No funeral is scheduled to take place, but a celebration of life will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
