Murphy, Richard Paul “Rick”

Murphy, Richard Paul “Rick” – Age 54, of West Jeddore, passed away suddenly on November 17, 2014 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Summerside, P.E.I., he was a son of the late Richard and Freida (Holmes) Murphy. Rick is survived by sister, Wendy Murphy; brother, Robert (Angie); nieces and nephews, Andy (Erin) MacInnis, Jeff (Jaclyn) MacInnis, Katti (Matt) MacInnis, Mark MacInnis, Lynann Murphy; great-nieces and nephews, Lorelai MacInnis, Bryce Power, Jordyn MacInnis, Jace Spears; aunts and uncles, Earith Petersen, Earl and Jean Murphy, Leonard and Christine Murphy, all of Prince Edward Island; Josey Breau, United States; Fred and Sheila Murphy, Flo Murphy, Sue Murphy, Jean Murphy, all of Prince Edward Island; many cousins. Rick was predeceased by grandparents, Grace and Alonzo Holmes, Lima and Clarence Murphy; aunts and uncles, Jean Holmes, Vivian Holmes, Marion (Bill) Henderson, Eric and Doris Holmes, Russell Murphy, Joe Murphy, Frank Murphy, Robert Petersen, Ulysses Breau; cousins, Freddy Henderson, Don Holmes, Garth Petersen, Patrick Murphy, Derrick Murphy, Doug Murphy, Marsha Henderson.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Rick’s wishes, he will return to Prince Edward Island and be laid to rest beside his dad. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday in West Prince Funeral Home, Palmer Road. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Monday in Immaculate Conception Church, Palmer Road.

Memorial donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or Prince Edward Island, or Canadian Cancer Society.

Costello, Kenneth Franklin

Costello, Kenneth Franklin – Age 65, Elderbank, passed away at home on November 5, 2014, due to complications from COPD. In his younger years, Kenny was an avid lover of softball, hockey and bowling. He had a great sense of humour, and enjoyed spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren, or on his motorcycle.

Surviving are daughters, Kerri Costello, Kim Costello Smith; grandchildren, Abi Mackenzie, Izzie Smith and Xander Smith. He was predeceased by his parents, Claude and Isabel Morash; sister, Patsy.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. All are welcome to a graveside service which will be held in St. Andrews Cemetery, Elderbank, on Thursday, at 2 p.m., with Rev Linda Yates officiating. Donations may be made to the SPCA.

Otterson, Earl Baxter

Otterson, Earl Baxter – Age 74, Lower Onslow, passed away November 10, 2014, at home. Born in Truro, he was a son of the late Ernest and Rita (Roode) Otterson. For many years Earl had been employed with the Town of Truro. He ran a hobby farm, and in his spare time enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are sons, Floyd (Tammy), Freddie (Joanne), Frankie (Niki); grandchildren, Jennifer, Dylan, Jared, Jalyssa, Shane, Jenna, Madison; sisters, Eileen, Hilda, and Betty; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Verna Hamilton; sister, Helen; brother, Buddy.

Cremation has taken place. A family committal service will be held in Clarke Cemetery, Lower Onslow. Donations may be made to Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of choice.

Wilson, Timothy Grant

Wilson, Timothy Grant – Age 56, Carrolls Corner. It is with saddened hearts that we had to say goodbye to our dad, brother, son and papa on November 10, 2014. Born in Lantz, Timmy was a son of Earl Wilson and the late Tena (Isenor) Wilson. Tim’s dedication was not only with his family, but his employer, The Shaw Group Ltd., where he worked for 36 years, starting out as a labourer and then a brick sorter. In 1983, he became a transport driver, the position he held at the time of his death.

He leaves behind his children, Grant (Kenzie), Carrolls Corner; Cuyler (Melissa), Peace River, Alta.; Amber (Gordie), Carrolls Corner; grandchildren, Hunter and Linkin, who will miss him very much; siblings, Darrell (Vallee), Truro; Becky, Stewiacke; Tena, Enfield; Robert (JoAnn), Lantz; Murray, Stewiacke; Derek, Grande Prairie, Alta.; James (Debbie), Nine Mile River; many nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Friday from 7-9 p.m., and funeral service will be Saturday at 11 a.m., both in St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Shubenacadie, Father Tom Kurudeepan OMI officiating. A reception will follow in Elmsdale Legion. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or The Children’ Wish Foundation of Canada.

Connors (Carter), Dorothy Eleanor “Dot”

Connors (Carter), Dorothy Eleanor “Dot” – Age 72, Wynn Park, Truro, formerly of Middle Stewiacke, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends Saturday, November 1, 2014. Born in Brookfield, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Florence (Morrisey) Carter. Dot will be deeply missed by her husband of 55 years, William; her children, Doug (Donna Dell) of Penticton, B.C.; Dale (Ron) McConnell of Abbotsford, B.C.; Lorelei (Barry) Taylor, Chaswood; Teresa (Milton Redmond), Onslow Mountain; grandchildren, Kristopher, Matthew, and Kyle McConnell, and Erin, Cory, Adam and Emma Taylor; great-grandchildren, Mikayla, Kameron and Kolton; siblings, Muriel Smith, Jean Skinner and Harry Carter Jr. Predeceased by sisters, Hilda and Mary and two brothers in infancy.

Her family meant everything to her. Mum’s sense of humour, determination and faith was the strength that got her through her health issues. Her outgoing personality and kind heart earned her many friends over the years and she will be truly missed by all. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses who looked after Mum during her numerous hospital stays at Colchester Regional and the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. We would especially like to thank the staff of Wynn Park; you took such great care of her and truly made it a home for her.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Service will be held on Wednesday, November 5 at 2 p.m. in Country Calvary Baptist Church, 1722 Highway 2, Milford. Reception to follow the service. Burial will be at a later date. MacKichan, Lillian Eva

MacKichan, Lillian Eva – Age 89, passed away peacefully October 30, 2014, in Melville Gardens, Halifax where she had lived for the past three years. She was born in Cleveland, Cape Breton on July 4, 1925. She was the fourth child of eight of the late Howard and Christina (Mauger) MacKichan. She received her early education in Cleveland. She attended Normal College in Truro and taught grades 4-9 at Portuguese Cove School. In 1958 she was employed with the Royal Bank where she worked for 27 years. Lillian always enjoyed working and she said there was never a bad day. She retired in 1985 after a very successful career. Lillian was a lifelong member of St. Matthew’s United Church where she served as the first female Elder. She also served as a member of the UCW and Finance Committee, among others, and was a CGIT leader for many years. Lillian’s hobbies included knitting, crafts and baking. Lillian devoted her time caring for those in need. This included making meals, visiting and comforting many people in both hospitals and nursing homes. Lillian loved to spend time with her family. She would make every niece and nephew feel like they were the most special with personal visits and gave each one her entire attention. Lillian’s home was the site of countless family gatherings, laughter, card playing and of course her famous chicken a lá king and chocolate cake. Christmas at Lillian’s was a family tradition that will be a cherished memory forever. She was a devoted and loving daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt and honorary Grammie.

She is survived by her brothers, James “Jim” (Arlene) and Harold “Archie” Lloyd MacKichan and sisters, Jessie Isabel (Charles) McCurdy, Katherine Mildred (Jack, predeceased) Hutchinson, Frances Jean (Roy) Merry and Christeen Annabel (Clint, predeceased) Russell. She was predeceased by brother, Ralph Mauger (Helen, predeceased) MacKichan. Lillian is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews who adored her.

A Celebration of Her Life service will be held Monday, November 3 at 2 p.m. in St. Matthew’s United Church, 1479 Barrington St. The minister officiating will be Rev. Betsy Hogan. There will be a reception in the church hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lillian’s memory may be made to St. Matthew’s United Church, 1479 Barrington St., Halifax, NS B3J 1Z2, Feed Nova Scotia, 213 Bedford Highway, Halifax, NS B3M 2J9 or a charity of your choice. Burial will take place in Fairview Lawn Cemetery following the reception.

Roche, Gerald William “Jed”

Roche, Gerald William “Jed” – Age 69, West Porters Lake, passed away October 28, 2014 in the QEII, VG Site, Halifax. Jed was born in Dartmouth, a son of the late Elmore and Myrtle Roche. He is survived by his wife, Penny (Morrison); sons, Jed, Leigh, Morgan; sister, Joan “Tootsie” Parker; stepmother, Marie; many nieces and nephews. Jed was predeceased by sisters, Glenda, Donna; brothers, Ken “Cage”, Doug; niece, Heather.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 3293 #7 Hwy., Lake Echo, followed by a reception in the social room. Visitors will be received at Jed's home following the reception. Donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Miller, Blanche Roberta

Miller, Blanche Roberta – Age 88, formerly of Lantz, passed away October 27, 2014, in The Magnolia Long Term Care, Enfield. Born in Upper Nine Mile River, she was a daughter of the late John and Mabel (MacPhee) Blois. She leaves to mourn her passing, daughter, Charlotte (Don) MacLeod, Alberta; son, Blaine (Kitty), Elmsdale; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Jimmy Thompson, Bridgewater. She was predeceased by her husband, Harry; daughter, Karen; grandson, Derek; son-in-law, Loran Ashley. The last surviving member of her family, she was also predeceased by siblings, Ross, Annie, and Dorothy.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with Blanche’s wishes, there will not be any visitation. A graveside service will be held at a later date. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Nelson, Frances Maude

Nelson, Frances Maude – Age 76 of Mill Village, died suddenly on October 25, 2014. Born in Sheet Harbour, she was a daughter of the late William and Kathleen (Kenny) Peach. Fran enjoyed going to yard sales with her husband, Everett, and for years could be quite often seen in a bingo hall. Family came first with her, but she would help anyone she could.

She will be sadly missed by husband, Everett; sons, Rick; Terry (Yvonne), Chris (Cheryl); Tim (Shirley); nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sisters, Joan (Roger) Gignac; Yvonne (Joe) Gignac; brother, Billy (Millie). She was predeceased by son, Vincent.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. In keeping with the family’s request, there will not be a visitation or funeral service. Memorial donations may be made to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. The family wishes to thank the nurses in the trauma unit of Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro, for their concern and compassion.

Graham, George William

Graham, George William – Age 86, Truro and formerly of Newton Mills, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2014 in Elk Court, Brookfield. George was a son of the late Willis and Annie (Hartling) Graham. He was born in Waltham, Mass., October 4, 1928, and moved with his family to Upper Stewiacke when he was 12 years old. George had a diverse employment background: he farmed, delivered milk in Halifax, had a Watkins route, worked on bridge construction, and was a school bus driver in the Stewiacke Valley. George was a very sociable person. He enjoyed working in the church and was an active member and Elder of Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean. After moving to Truro in 2008, due to failing health, he was an adherent of St. James Presbyterian Church, and a member of its male choir. He particularly enjoyed music and gardening, especially growing dahlias. He won numerous awards at exhibitions for his flowers. He was a member of the Middle Musquodoboit Agricultural Society, the Dahlia Society of NS, the American Dahlia Society, and the NS Association of Garden Clubs. He was a founding member of both the Stewiacke Valley Garden Club and Arimathea Funeral Co-op.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, the former Ruth MacDonald, Truro; daughter, Kathryn Graham, Edmonton; granddaughter, Elewyn Epp, Vancouver; grandson, Alden Epp, Australia. He was the last surviving member of his family, and was predeceased by siblings, Vernon, Freda, Eileen.

Visitation will be 6:30-9 p.m. Saturday, and funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday, both in Sharon Presbyterian Church, Dean, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Burial to follow in Eastville Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to a charity of choice. A special thank you is extended to all the staff of Elk Court for the excellent care given to George.

Rogers, Gloria Jane

Rogers, Gloria Jane - Middle Musquodoboit. It is with great sadness that the family announce her peaceful passing, on October 22, 2014, in Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow. Born on April 21, 1928, in Hamilton, Bermuda, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Clara (Tumbridge) Foster. She immigrated to Canada in 1946 as a war bride. Most of her married life she was a homemaker. In recent years, she enjoyed most of her day playing on the computer.

Surviving are children, Clyde (Helen), Shirley (Dave), Archie (Debbie); 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Billy (Marie) McCudden; numerous nieces and nephews; and special aunt, Harriet Grimes and family in Bermuda. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Austin; son, Keith; grandson, Joshua.

In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Monday, 7-9 p.m., and funeral service will be Tuesday, at 2 p.m., both in Middleton United Church, Middle Musquodoboit, Rev. Marjory Cornelius officiating. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society.

Cox (Boutilier), Thelma Marie

Cox (Boutilier), Thelma Marie – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Thelma Marie Cox (Boutilier), on October 20th, 2014, in Dartmouth, at the age of 81. Born in Mushaboom, on December 4, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Nora Boutilier. Thelma was an amazing wife, mother and grandmother and had a special relationship with her paternal grandmother which formed the foundation of the wonderful role she played in the lives of her grandchildren. Leaving Mushaboom at a young age, Thelma moved to Ontario where she worked full-time and went to school in the evenings. Several years later, Thelma and family moved back to Nova Scotia. A true animal lover, Thelma rescued many animals, wild and tame, including her last calico cat CeeCee. Thelma was a fabulous cook who loved to feed family and friends and host gatherings at their home in East Petpeswick. Over the years, Thelma enjoyed the company of her special girlfriends, Myrt Sydney and Dorothy Jahn. She spent the majority of her working life with her husband Mike at their business Cox’s Auto Parts in Musquodoboit Harbour. Involved in the first Food Bank on the Eastern Shore, Thelma was an unfailing support for her husband and family. Spending her retirement years in Grand Bahamas Island with Mike, they made many good friends.

Survived by her children, Michelle (Andy) Gregory, Brent (Tillie Chase), Carol Anne (Dave Courtney); grandchildren, Timothy and Jamieson Fougere, Sara and Jane Courtney; step grandchildren, Sandi, San Francisco, Steve MacPherson; brothers, Harold (Grace) Boutilier, Hubert Boutilier. Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Michael, who she missed desperately and loved dearly; brothers, Almon, Daley, Ronald, Daniel, Godfrey.

There will be a service on Friday, October 24th, at 11 a.m. in First United Church, Musquodoboit Harbour. A reception will follow after the service. Donations can be made to your local food bank.

Grandy, Sheila Irene

Grandy, Sheila Irene – October 2, 1954 – October 20, 2014. Nine Mile River. Sheila will be sadly missed by her husband, Randy Moore, but has gone to join her beloved daughter, Brandi.

Rian and Liam McGregor were her precious gifts, and will always be told how treasured they were as her grandchildren. Also surviving are her daughter, Nancy (Sean) McGregor, Regina, Sask.; sister, Shenna Thompson, Lakeside; who were both privileged to be able to hold her hand, as she made her journey. She also leaves behind brother, Merle Thompson, Owen Sound, Ont.; and an amazing group of extended family, affectionately known as “the Moores”.

She was a valued employee of the Holiday Inn Express – Halifax Airport, where she enjoyed her job and co-workers, especially her boss, Judy.

She was predeceased by her parents, James and Nancy Thompson; daughter, Brandi Lee-Ann; brothers, Dale, Leon, and Everett.

Friends are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life, on Friday, 7-9 p.m., in the Holiday Inn Express – Halifax Airport, 180 Pratt & Whitney Dr., Enfield. Donations in Sheila’s memory may be made to Lung Association Nova Scotia or Colchester East Hants Health Foundation.

Fisher-Benvie, Joyce Marie

Fisher-Benvie, Joyce Marie – Age 45, Wellington, passed away October 1, 2014, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Alvin and Blanche Fisher. Joyce enjoyed reading and camping with the family. She worked in her husband’s business tending to the management of the office.

Surviving are husband, Ralph; children, Cassie and Chance; step-children, Martin and Heather. She was predeceased by her sister, Darlene.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Monday, at 2 p.m. in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. The family will meet friends downstairs in the church following the service. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or Kidney Foundation of Canada.

Cullen, Joseph Carl

Cullen, Joseph Carl – Age 70, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. Born in Charlottetown, P.E.I. on April 22, 1944. Survived by his wife of 47 years, Nadine (Green); daughters, Ellen (Hastings), Toronto; Christine Cullen (Jon Konrad), Boston; Mary Cullen, Toronto; Joe’s most cherished grandchildren, Cullen Hastings, Jacob and Julia Konrad; brother-in-law, Peter Green (Gerrie Masters), Halifax; sisters-in-law, Mary Foley (Paul), Burlington, Ont.; Mae Bresson (late Alex), Christine Elliott (Brian Hastings), Cole Harbour; Deanna Cullen, Porters Lake; several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his brother, Andrew.

Following a successful 40-year career in the electrical distribution business, Joe enjoyed travelling to visit “his girls” and family in Toronto and Boston, as well as many very special vacations in Florida – most recently celebrating his best birthday ever – No. 70! An avid golfer, he enjoyed countless games at Ashburn Golf Club and in Florida. He shot his age in July at Ashburn and was modestly proud of scoring three holes-in-one over the course of his “playing” career.

Joe will be dearly missed by extended family and friends of 50 plus years. Joe’s family thanks each and every one of you for your unending support during this most difficult time. Our memories of good times will live on forever. We thank the staff of Gladstone Family Practice Associates and the QEII Neurology Department for the exceptional care and compassion given during his very brief stay.

Funeral mass will take place 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 1 in St. Thomas Aquinas Church, 1725 Oxford St., Halifax.
