Mary Jane Lenore Grant

Grant, Mary Jane Lenore – With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Jane Lenore Grant of Lantz, on April 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Mary dedicated her life to caring for others, both in her professional role as a registered nurse and in her personal life. Her kindness, patience, sense of humour and deep empathy touched the lives of countless patients, colleagues, friends, and family.

Without a doubt, she would say her greatest accomplishment was her family. She and her husband, Patrick, created a home filled with love, warmth, laughter, and unwavering support. Mary was happiest when her family were all together- for Sunday dinners, special occasions and random adventures.

Mary expressed her creativity in many ways, whether it be tole painting, scrapbooking, card making or sewing. Many of her talents were handed down to her from her own mother. We will forever treasure all her beautiful creations.

During her recent illness, she exuded resilience and strength, never complaining about her circumstances and leaving behind cherished life lessons and memories along the way. We are so blessed to have had an additional 10 months with her.

Mary was born in Truro, to the late Edith and Otis Bonnell. She was raised in Truro, alongside her five siblings, all of whom she cared for deeply.

Mary is survived by her devoted children, Carlene, Sonya and Steven (Kimberly); her cherished grandchildren, Allison, Matthew, Lauren, Avery and Ashley; her siblings, Percy (Diane) and Susan; and numerous nieces and nephews. Our family also wishes to acknowledge her close friends, Edie, Karen, Debbie, Nancy, Marie, Venetta, Peter and Bev for their friendship and support they provided to Mary throughout the years and during her recent illness - the number of people who showed up speaks to her character and how deeply she was loved.

Mary was predeceased by her loving husband of 48 years, Patrick. They shared a deep and enduring bond built on love, loyalty and companionship. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Robert, Harold and Jimmy; as well as her grandson, James.

Our family would like to extend our appreciation to Dr. Elsawy and Christine, RN, Colchester Cancer Clinic, VON, and to all those who generously donated blood products, which Mary benefited from during the course of her illness.  We would also like to thank her nieces, Sarah and Lisa, for their unwavering support in making it possible for Mary to be at home in her final days, surrounded by love.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.

As per Mary’s request, there will be no funeral. Those wishing to honour her memory may do so by donating to Blood Cancer United or by donating blood and platelets through Canadian Blood Services.

-We will carry your memory forward with gratitude and love.

Horst Soehl

Soehl, Horst – Age 84, of Cloverdale, passed away peacefully at home on April 14, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; sons, Thomas (Carol Ann) and Jon; grandchildren, Megan McNeil (Daniel) and Marie Coolsaet (Reid); and great-grandchildren, Louis, Elodie, Rory and Myles. He is also survived by his half-brother, Heiner Schmitt and step-sister, Maren Hayenga in Germany.

Horst was born in Buettel, Germany, and he went on to study veterinary medicine. The family moved to Canada in 1975 where he became district veterinarian for the Truro office of Agriculture Canada. The family was welcomed with generosity and kindness by the community of Brookfield in 1975 before moving to the farm in Cloverdale. He loved the farm and woodlot on the Stewiacke River and was its fierce defender against deer jackers and litterers.

He had an adventurous spirit and travelled to remote places in Canada (BC, Yukon, NWT, Labrador), Latin America and Zambia. He was a competitor and relished every game of tennis, pickleball and his favourite German card game, Skat. He was a gracious loser, which he did rarely.  When he won it was not always with grace…

Above all, he was passionate about nature and animals, especially his dogs. Taking care of animals and alleviating their suffering was his calling. Safeguarding the farm as a refuge for deer, swallows, mushrooms and the plethora of other animals he catalogued over the years became his major preoccupation to the very end.

It was fitting that he passed on the same day that the spring peepers started singing again.

Final arrangements have not yet been made for a Celebration of Life.

Ruby Marguerite (Russell) Webber

Webber (Russell), Ruby Marguerite – of Upper Lakeville, Nova Scotia, peacefully passed away at 95 years old on April 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Ruby was our Mom, Nanny, and Nanny 2 Shoes, and we would like to tell you a little about her incredible life - well lived - in “the best part of the best part of the world”.

Ruby was born in Clam Harbour, Nova Scotia, to Roy and Hazel Russell. She was one of five children, the eldest daughter, sister to Sheila (Watkins), and had three older brothers, Bruce, Royce and Burris “Bub”.

Ruby spent her first 11 years of life on the old homestead in Clam Harbour without indoor plumbing and electricity for at least 8 of those years. She told us stories about the two-seater outhouse, the chamber pots under the beds, Simpsons catalogs for toilet paper and oil lamps for light. She also told us about fun times, coasting with her siblings, catching smelt in the brook and building camps in the woods. She shared memories of Sunday picnics and fun with family. In 1942-43 Ruby and family moved to Eastern Passage while her dad worked at Imperial Oil. She remembered this time fondly for the friendships she made, however, she also talked about caring for her ailing mom. In 1944 the family moved back to Clam Harbour and that is when Ruby’s next chapter took off.

As a young woman of 16, Ruby was working on her grade 11 and needed to leave the community to continue her schooling. She traveled by car, the lone local taxi in fact, from Clam Harbour to Oyster Pond to attend school and that is how she met the love of her life, Ellis (he was the driver). They apparently knew quite quickly that they would be married but needed to wait until she was 19 and had her parent’s permission. The two married in 1950, and Ruby became a wife and a mom. She had three children, moved to Dartmouth where she and Ellis built a home around themselves (literately living in the basement while building the upper floors) and raised their family all while operating an Oil Distributer Business from the early 1950’s until 1970.

By all accounts these were busy years. Always determined, independent and hard-working she taught herself to drive (pulling the car in and out of the driveway), worked the oil phone, kept the business’ books and raised her three children. She hosted Saturday night card games with friends, experimented with brew making (resulting in explosions under the bed), enjoyed family camping trips across the country and trips to the ocean with the kids piled in the car.

In 1970 Ruby and Ellis moved back to the Eastern Shore to Upper Lakeville, Lake Charlotte where they built and operated E&F Webber Lakeside Park, an extremely well-loved campground that remains in operation and in the family today. In the 70s and 80s grandkids came along and Mom became Nanny promptly spoiling all rotten. She had a campground store and sold ice cream and penny candy – no one went without. Winters were spent on skidoos and sleds and summers on pedal boats and by the campfire roasting marshmallows.

Nanny’s life was not without challenge. She lost her mom at the young age of 21 and lost her husband when she was just 59. But she kept going, finding purpose and joy in life. Her strength and resiliency were some of her strongest lessons to our family.

Nanny was on the go - she was an avid card player, a solid technical bowler, a scrabble aficionado and an extremely competitive crib player. She was a long-term member of the Rebekah Lodge, member of the Harbour Lites Seniors Club for over 30 years and a dedicated member of Saint James Anglican Church, active in the Altar Guild and treasurer for almost 40 years. Nanny enjoyed genealogy and volunteered many years and much time at Memory Lane Heritage Village, working in the Eastern Shore Archives. She was a well-known member of the Eastern Shore Community.

In 2005 Nanny became a great-grandmother and shortly thereafter in a moment of laughter trying to find her shoes that had disappeared under the couch she was renamed by her eldest great-grandchild “Nanny 2 Shoes”.  Nanny 2 Shoes’ pride for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was ever present. She was always sharing stories, teaching us card games, skunking us at crib, and sharing time at the lake. Our family will cherish memories of her sledding through the campground, the time she roasted a chicken in a hole at the end of the driveway over an open fire in the aftermath of Hurricane Juan, weekly Sunday dinners with apple pie for dessert, countless campfires and visits to the beach and time hanging out in the campground store.

Our adored Nanny 2 Shoes was a loving wife, friend, sister, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was determined, strong, smart, had a great sense of humour, and above all else was dedicated to her family. She was a social being and was forever grateful, seeing all the good in the world around her. She taught us to be resilient, to take things in stride, to find the joy in life, and to keep moving forward. She lived life to the fullest, devoted to family, friends and community. Nanny 2 Shoes will always be with us in our hearts and memories but not seeing her on her swing at her yellow house in front of the campground will be hard.

Nanny 2 Shoes was predeceased by her husband, Ellis; and her brothers, Bruce, Royce, and Burris “Bub”. She leaves behind a large and loving family including her sister, Sheila (Watkins); her lifelong dear friend, Bernice; her children, Karen (Jim) Dalling, Alan (Deb) Webber and Robin (Marilyn) Webber; her grandchildren, Jim Dalling (Laura Hegge), Kelly (Daryll) Cowper, David (Grace) Webber, Chad Webber, Wade (Mayanda) Webber, Alena (Trent) Christie, Kari Webber (Jeff Evans), Megan (Nick) Pettipas, Greg Webber (Crystal Gauthier); and her great-grandchildren, Mya and Eli Cowper, Luella and Ellis Dalling, Lloyd and Ruby Pettipas, Grady and Rowan Webber, Levi and Jacob Webber, and Adalyn Evans, and, her expected 12th great-grandchild anticipated to arrive this spring.

A service will be held on April 29, 2026 at 11 a.m. in Saint James Anglican Church, Upper Lakeville Road, followed immediately by interment and a reception at the cookhouse in Memory Lane Heritage Village.

Our family would like to thank all the Northwood Home Care workers who helped care for Ruby/Mom/Nanny/Nanny 2 Shoes and made it possible for her to stay in her home until this year.  We also want to thank the staff of Northwood’s Ivany Place in Bedford for the amazing care they provided while she was there. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint James Anglican Church, 471 Upper Lakeville Rd, Head of Jeddore, NS B0J 1P0; the Northwood Foundation or a charity of your choice.

Colin John Laffin

Laffin, Colin John - Age 78, of Upper Stewiacke, passed away peacefully April 6, 2026 in Cedarstone Enhanced Care, Truro surrounded by his family

Born in Upper Stewiacke, he was a son of the late Frank and Jean (Johnstone) Laffin.

Colin spent much of his life working as a dump truck operator for various local companies, a job he took great pride in. He later retired after 17 years with the Department of Transportation, where he worked as a snow plow and grader operator. Never one to stay idle for long, he returned to the road for a couple of summers as a dump truck operator with Mosher Limestone.

He will always be known for traveling the roads, always the scenic route, heading for Tim Hortons or looking for that next pack of gum. Colin loved going to car shows and enjoyed them even more with his best friend and brother, Ronald. Never missing the opportunity for trips to Tims with his friend, Pat Watt or accompanying his friend and neighbor, Clayton Carrol on drives to anywhere Clayton may have been going including Thursday’s trip to the Cattle Market.

He took great pride in his lawn—some might say it was less a yard and more a lifelong project—and he had a close relationship with his lawn mower, arguably one of his most reliable companions. Known for his kindness, quick sense of humor, easy laughter and perfectly kept lawn these will all leave a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Colin will forever be loved and missed by his daughters, Deanna (Raymond), Christa (Jamie) Higgins, Stephanie (Stephen); grandchildren, Jaclyn (Trent), Timothy, Chelsey (Nick), Cassidy (Christopher); great-grandchildren, Gavin, Charleigh, Alvera, Olivia and Angel; sisters, Francis Ellis, Heather (Ed) Beaulieu; brother, Ronald (Kathy) Laffin; sister-in-law, Joan Laffin; brother-in-law, Walter Ross; several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by sister, Bonnie Ross; brother, Dan; brothers-in-laws, Alex Ellis and Garnet Dickie; nephews, Kerry Ellis and Robbie Ellis.

A special thanks to Pat and Beatrice Watt for their friendship over the years.

A special thanks goes out to the loving staff of Cedarstone Enhanced Care for their exceptional care for Colin over the past 4 years. Also, for the compassion and hospitality shown to all of the family in his last days.

Cremation has taken place. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral service.

Morrison was a proud Veteran who served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years as a Physical Training Instructor, a Seaman on three separate Naval ships, and then as a Navigator for the Tracker airplanes when he was posted to Shearwater Naval Base. John spent many hours developing walking trails through the woods and greatly enjoyed many long hikes with his beloved dogs. Another of his great joys was building the cottage in Glendyer, Cape Breton where his children and grandchildren got to spend many happy summers. He designed and built the cottage by hand over several years. It was a work of love and a place where he felt most content. A special love was the music of Cape Breton, especially the local music scene in Mabou.

John's boundless wisdom and loving guidance were a source of strength for his family, who will feel his absence profoundly. He was never without a thoughtful word when one was needed most.

Marilyn Jean Stoddard

Stoddard, Marilyn Jean – It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Marilyn Jean Stoddard of Malagash on Friday March 27, 2026 at the age of 73. Born in Head of Jeddore to Harold and June Stoddard she also enjoyed living many years in Porters Lake.
Marilyn is survived by her loving husband, Dave; daughter, Christina; son, Chad; son-in-law, Ricky; grandchildren, Zach, Zoe and Mason; and sisters, Sandra Morash (Ross) and Margaret Lever (Charlie). Marilyn was predeceased by her parents and brother, Edwin.
Thirty years ago Marilyn married her soulmate, Dave. The two could be seen enjoying each other’s company as they cruised in their little red sports car or out walking their fur babies, Rosie and Emmy. They also loved traveling together, especially to their home away from home in Bermuda.
Marilyn was a selfless, dedicated mother who was always so proud of her children’s accomplishments no matter how big or small. She was also an amazing Nana. She loved watching her grandsons play hockey and loudly cheering them on from the stands. Her and her granddaughter enjoyed nothing more than walking the beach searching for sea glass to use in one of their many crafting projects. Marilyn was always there for her sisters as an ear to listen or someone to provide caring advice and most of all to share a laugh.
Marilyn dedicated her entire professional career to CIBC, starting out as a teller at the branch in Jeddore and retiring as a credit risk manager. What meant the most to her over the years working with CIBC was the lifelong friends she made. Whether it was childhood friends or the Cool Gals, Marilyn always found herself surrounded by caring and supportive women.
As an avid gardener Marilyn was blessed with a green thumb, she could turn any pile of dirt into a beautiful flower garden. She also loved celebrating the holidays and may hold a record for Halloween and Christmas decorations owned by one person. Besides her family there was nothing Marilyn loved more than a lobster dinner, it was the one thing she refused to share.
Cremation has already taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative.
We hope to see all her friends and family when we celebrate her life in late May, more details of date and location to follow, please send an email to stoddardchad@hotmail.com if you’d like us to send that information once it’s been determined.
The family would also like to extend a sincere thank you to the incredible Doctors and Nurses at the Lillain Fraser Memorial hospital for the exceptional care and support you provided.
Marilyn will forever be loved and missed.

Shelley Beth Langille

Langille, Shelley Beth – It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we share the passing of Shelley Beth Langille.

After calling 911 for the last time, Shelley spent 14 days in the ICU in Halifax on full life support. In true Shelley fashion, she fought with everything she had. She was able to come off the ventilator, breathe on her own, and most importantly, express her wishes.

Though her spirit was strong, her body, tired from years of struggle, could not continue to sustain her. Shelley found comfort as she watched March break photos roll in. Surrounded by love, she held on until she could hold on no more. Shelley slipped away peacefully on the evening of March 16, 2026. Those who truly knew Shelley understand how her physical limitations did not match her spirit and love of life. Shelley embodied Christian care for others, empathy and optimism. Shelley touched many lives in countless ways.

Shelley lived life to the fullest and never sat back and watched. Shelley planned adventures, took risks, worked hard, and loved deeply. We could not possibly name all the lives she touched. Please know that she loved and cherished each and every one of you.

Shelley had a deep passion for teaching; it was her true calling. A dear friend once described her as a maestro directing an orchestra when she taught; it was exactly what she was meant to do.

She loved her family deeply and was their historian, holding onto the details of life and sharing them with all who loved her.

Shelley was also an animal person through and through. Her horse, Freckles, her chickens, her bees, and most of all her cats, brought her immense joy.

Shelley was predeceased by her loving father, Clayton Langille.

She is survived by her mother, Beth Langille and her chosen family: her sister, Julee MacAfee; her brother, Robb MacNeil; and her nieces, Molly and Emma Clark, and Patricia and Cecile MacNeil.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Kidney Foundation of Canada, Truro, Nova Scotia Chapter.

Shelley will be remembered for her strength, her spirit, and the love she gave so freely. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. As Shelley said on her last day, “I had a good life”. Until we meet again my friend.

A celebration of Shelley’s life will take place in July, and burial will be beside her dad and grandparents in Earltown, in a private ceremony.
