Palmer (Gillam), Hilda Martha

Palmer (Gillam), Hilda Martha – Age 96. It is with heavy hearts the family of Hilda Martha Palmer, of Musquodoboit Harbour, announces her passing on February 5, 2015, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour, after a brief illness. Born July 10, 1918, in St. David’s, Nfld., she was the eldest daughter of the late Kenneth and May (McKay) Gillam. A very special lady, Mom was in her glory preparing for family get-togethers, or entertaining friends with a tune on her harmonica. She loved hitting the dance floor with Dad, her favourite dance partner, and playing cards, crocheting and knitting.

She is survived by daughters, Zona Hutt, Sheet Harbour; Linda (Bruce) Grainger, Cole Harbour; Brenda Palmer, Musquodoboit Harbour; Paula (Brian) Dooks, Head of Jeddore; sister-in-law, Florence Gillam, St. David’s; grandchildren, Shauna, Brian, Ken, Joel, Jenna, Nicola, nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. Hilda was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Kenneth Maxwell Palmer; sisters and their spouses, Mabel (Ted) Hosking, Ida (James) Mitchell; brother, Noah; son-in-law, Robert Hutt.

No visitation by request. Funeral service will be Monday at 2:00 p.m. in St. Thomas Anglican Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Rev. Trish Ingram officiating. Interment will held at a later date in St. Thomas Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Twin Oaks/The Birches Health Care Charitable Foundation, or charity of choice.

The family extends a special thank you to the caregivers of The Birches Nursing Home (Mom always referred to you as her special angels) for their kind and considerate care over the past year, and doctors and nurses of Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital for their care during her short stay there.

Young, Max Bernays – Age 83, Musquodoboit Harbour, passed away February 2, 2015 in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Max and his wife, Millie, the love of his life, raised their family in Upper Musquodoboit where he helped to keep the lights on with the Nova Scotia Power Commission for 30 years.

Max is survived by his children, Danny (Carla), Lawrencetown; Randy (Debbie), Calgary, Alta.; Julia (Keith) Rhuland, Bridgewater; Dwayne (Beth), Glenelg; Kim (Dan) Jennings, Musquodoboit Harbour; Andrew (Lisa Bonang), Musquodoboit Harbour. He was very proud of his 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Leah Anderson, Mildred Karsten, and Marion Topple. He was predeceased by his wife, Millie; parents, Archie and Laverna Young, brothers, Louis (Marie), Cecil (Phonse), Wayne (Joan), Keith (Joan); sister, Elsie (Darryl) Fader.

Funeral mass will be held on Friday at 10 a.m., in St. Philip Neri Catholic Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Father Randy Doucette officiating. A reception will follow downstairs in the church. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, where he was treated with love and respect.

Myers (Mills), Elvie Florence

Myers (Mills), Elvie Florence – Age 83, Middle Musquodoboit and formerly of Head of Jeddore, passed away January 31, 2015, surrounded by her family. Elvie was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was a lifelong caregiver, starting at age nine. She had many jobs in her younger years, but caregiving was her passion and she achieved that passion at The Birches Nursing Home until her retirement. Mom was extremely selfless and always gave of herself and anything she had to those in need.

Elvie was a wonderful and loving mother and grandmother of Richard (Paula), Carter (Darlene), Wayde, Timothy (Joyce), Thomas (Nadine), Lana (Howard), Sherry (Dennis) and Heather (Gary); 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; special aunt of many nephews and one niece. She was predeceased by husband, Leslie; brother, Harley; sister and best friend, Jean Foley; parents, Harland and Ivy Mills; daughter-in-law, Lorraine Foley.

Funeral service will be held on Friday at 1 p.m. in St. James Anglican Church, Head of Jeddore, Rev. Mike Foley officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall. No flowers by request. Jennings, Catherine Alexandra

Jennings, Catherine Alexandra – Age 76, Middle Musquodoboit, passed away January 28, 2015, in Braeside Home for Special Care. Born in Antigonish County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel MacDonald and Jeanette (MacLean) MacDonald Cole. Catherine enjoyed a game of cards, playing bingo and she loved to dance.

Surviving are son, Dan Pickles, Edmonton; siblings, Don MacDonald, Alberta; Christine Begin, Ontario; Louise Pettipas, Quebec; Frank Cashin, Texas; Mary Tober, British Columbia; Marleen Hubley, Antigonish; half-siblings, Anne Marie Thiebert, George Cole, Eugene Cole, Betty MacAulay, Lynn Zettler, all of Alberta; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John; step-father, Ivan Cole.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A service celebrating Catherine’s life will be held at a later date in Middleton United Church, Middle Musquodoboit. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery.

Justason, Burton Alexander

Justason, Burton Alexander – Age 84, of Truro and formerly of Stewiacke, passed away on January 24, 2015. Born in Black’s Harbour, N.B., he was a son of the late Warren and Kathleen (Bradford) Justason. Burt had been a past president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70, Stewiacke, and was a long-time member of the Odd Fellows, where he held the offices as the Past Grand Patriarch of the Encampment Branch and Past Grand Master of the Odd Fellows of the Atlantic Provinces.

Surviving are five children; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Jean Agnes Dewar; second wife, Dorothy Eileen (Sullivan) McMichael; four brothers; three sisters.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be Wednesday, 7-9 p.m., and funeral service will be Thursday, at 11 a.m., both in St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, Shubenacadie, Father Tom Kurudeepan OMI officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Family flowers only. Memorial donations may be made to Atlantic Odd Fellows and Rebekah Visual Research Program or a charity of choice. The family will meet friends for a reception in the Stewiacke Legion following the service.

Burns, Robert Edward

Burns, Robert Edward – Of Truro. It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved dad, brother, uncle, grandfather, friend and companion on January 22, 2015, in Colchester East Hants Health Centre, with his loving family by his side. He is survived by daughters, Bonnie Canfield (Elwood), Tatamagouche; Diane Hilchie (Steven), Enfield; Jeff Burns, Cambridge, B.C.; sisters, Gladys and Joan; brother, Mike; as well as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and Janet, his close companion. He was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn; parents, Harry and Dorothy Burns; brother, Donnie and sister, Georgina.

Rob retired after many years of service with CN Rail. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Canadian Air Force Club. He loved fishing, playing darts and enjoyed many trips to Florida, and his love for trains.

A service will be held to celebrate his life in Onslow United Church on Monday, January 26, at 3 p.m. beginning with a Legion Tribute. Combden, Eli David

Combden, Eli David – Upper Musquodoboit. Born on January 27, 1951. On January 17, 2015, Dave succumbed to his hard-fought struggle of 16 years with MS during which time he never complained. Dave was one of a kind. He was a selfless man with a heart of gold. He loved his family unconditionally, and became fast friends with everyone he met. During his working days, he was employed at DND Halifax, as a bosun on a dredger in Tuk., NWT. He was an oil burner mechanic working with several oil companies, and also owned his own oil burner service. He also worked at MacTara Lumber Mill. Dave took a great interest in current events and sports, especially watching his favorite team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Surviving are his wife, Linda; daughter, Kelly (Steve) Dahr Hughes; son, David; grandchildren, Damien, Emma Jean, and Elliot; brothers, Esau (Ruby), Ralph (Lottie); sisters, Ethel (Joe) Anthony; Ivy (John) Quinlan; sister-in-law, Shirley Combden; stepsisters, Leah and Julia; stepbrother, Sam (Mary); also many extended family members; and special friend, Gerald Greening. He was predeceased by his parents, Eli Combden and Lucy Combden Godwin; stepfather, Israel Godwin; brother, Jim; stepbrothers, Steward and Nehemiah.

Ward, Clifford William “Bill” – Wyse’s Corner, passed away tragically on January 7, 2015, two days before his 82nd birthday. Born in Lower Sackville, he was a son of the late Ralph Edward “Sharky” and Edna Mae (Rayner) Ward. Bill contracted bulldozer work for many years and later worked with Department of Highways, becoming superintendent.

Ward, M. Ann – Wyse’s Corner, died tragically on January 7, 2015, 11 days before her 55th birthday. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Clifford William “Bill” and Ida Raye (McAndrew) Ward. In her younger years, Ann worked at Zeller’s, where she also did some modelling. She was an accomplished seamstress and for the past 10 years, worked in housekeeping at the Hilton Garden Inn. Ann felt that her proudest achievement came from raising her four children.

Surviving are children, Kent (Liz) Hennigar, Kingston, Ont.; Codey Hennigar, Chandra Hennigar, Nikita Carstensen, all of Wyse’s Corner; granddaughter, Lilly; siblings, Christine (John) Kozier, Lake Egmont; Tim Ward (Eric Hill), Pembroke; Wade Ward, Elderbank; Lorelei (Gordon) Dillman, Lake Egmont; Dan (Marion) Lohnes, Burlington, Ont.; Blair Ruggles, Dartmouth; brother-in-law, Greg McMullin, Dartmouth; extended family, Janice LaForest, Ecum Secum. Ward, Ida Raye – Age 74, Wyse’s Corner, died tragically on January 7, 2015. Born in Lantz, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Elizabeth (Paley) McAndrew, and was raised from the age of 10 days by her aunt, Rachel Smith. Ida worked as a sales clerk at Sears for a number of years. She ran the canteen at Dollar Lake Park where she met many people, but her biggest accomplishment was being a homemaker.

Weatherhead, Edward George

Weatherhead, Edward George – Age 65, of Upper Rawdon, passed away at home, on January 6, 2015. Born in Windsor, he was a son of the late Earle and Erna (Frail) Weatherhead. Ed was a long-time employee of W.D. Lawrence Auto Salvage, which he thought of as his extended family. Though he lived alone, his life was not solitary; he had many friends, especially his group at Tim’s in Elmsdale. The many sincere condolences expressed from unexpected places have been heartwarming.

Surviving are brothers, Larry (Diane), Ilderton, Ont.; Brian (Debbie), Upper Rawdon; sister-in-law, Rose; nieces, Tammy, Rachael, Shereen and Lisa; nephews, Chris, David, and Andrew; grand niece, Chelsea. He was predeceased by brother, Wayne; grand niece, Savannah.

Stevens, Helen M.

Stevens, Helen M. – Of Stewiacke, passed away on December 17, 2014. Born in Morristown, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Frederick Amasa and Mary (Harendarick) Bigelow. Helen graduated from Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She enjoyed a nursing career for many years at hospitals in Musquodoboit Harbour and the United States.

Surviving are her brother, John; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Ivan; son, Michael; brother, Percy; sister, Jean.

Helen loved her cats, especially Billy. Helen was loved, in spite of herself, by many of her care workers, and is missed by others who lived around her.

Cremation has taken place. Interment will follow in the spring in Pine Grove Cemetery, Stewiacke East.

Laybolt (Myers), Shirley Winnifred

Laybolt (Myers), Shirley Winnifred – Age 75, Head of Jeddore, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on December 31, 2014, in Twin Oaks Memorial Hospital, Musquodoboit Harbour. Shirley loved and was loved by her family and friends. Surviving are sons, Danny (Peggy), Watson (Theresa), and David (Vicki); her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mosher, Dorothy May

Mosher, Dorothy May – Age 82, East Lawrencetown and formerly of Upper Musquodoboit. It is with great sadness that we announce Dorothy’s passing on December 18, 2014, in Bissett Court, Cole Harbour. Born in Caribou Gold Mines, she was a daughter of the late George and Mary Ellen “Nellie” (Worrell) Logan.

Dorothy graduated from the Halifax Infirmary and had a nursing career at Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, with VON, and worked in the local doctor’s office. She also worked for Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia and operated her own dress shop for a number of years in her active retirement. Dorothy enjoyed golfing, dancing, playing cards, and spending time with her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family, extended family and many friends.

Dorothy was the beloved wife of Roy Mosher; mother of Derek (Janet), Kathy (Peter), and Paul; grandmother of Deanna, Tristan, Bereket, Jeffrey, Tyler and Krista; sister of Erminie Morash, Dawn (Lester) Archibald, Meta McCarthy, John (Faye) Logan and Clarence (Kaye) Logan. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Louise Logan; brothers-in-law, Reagh Canning, Russell Woodin, many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Laura, Shirley, Ruby; brothers, Lewis, Gerald, Burnham, Fred, and a brother in infancy.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Saturday, January 3, 2015, at 2 p.m. in St. James United Church, Upper Musquodoboit, Rev. Michael Henderson officiating. The family will meet friends for a reception downstairs in the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia would be greatly appreciated. Churney, Terrance David “Terry”

Churney, Terrance David “Terry” – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Terrance David “Terry” Churney, aged 67, of Bedford and formerly Lower Sackville. Death occurred on December 18, 2014, in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII.

Born on September 7, 1947, in St. Joseph’s Hospital, Glace Bay, Terry moved to the Halifax area in 1968. He worked in the grocery business before starting work at Halifax Transit in 1973, where he rose from driver to Operations Manager, before taking early retirement in 2000, due to ill health. Terry also volunteered on the North West Planning and Advisory Committee, as well as representative on the North West Community Transit Committee. Since moving to Lower Sackville in 1973, Terry and his wife, Sylvia, were very involved in their parishes (first St. John Vianney and later St. Elizabeth Seton Parish). Terry was a Charter Member of three Knights of Columbus councils (Council 7077, Council 10565 and Fourth Degree Council Archbishop J.G. Berry Assembly). Terry was also past Grand Knight of Council 10565, St. Elizabeth Seton Parish. Terry worked with other Knights to bring Days of Enrichment to our parish and many more parishes in the area. He and his wife taught Sunday School and he worked on many projects in the parish over the years. Terry was a member of the Halifax Cursillo Movement. Terry was a big Chicago Blackhawks fan, who was lucky enough to see his team win two Stanley Cups in recent years.

Terry is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Sylvia (Ellsworth); his son, Patrick Churney; his daughter, Sheryl (Peter) Strickland, and their children, Boppy’s grandchildren, Jessica and the twins, Matthew and Joshua. He loved his grandchildren more than words can express. His is also survived by his brother, John “Jackie” and his wife, Maureen, London, Ont.; his brother, Allan, Glace Bay; his brother-in-law, Harvey (Anne) Ellsworth, Glace Bay; his brother-in-law, Wallace (Karen) Ellsworth, Leamington, Ont.; and his sister-in-law, Cheryl MacIntosh, Ottawa, Ont. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, extended family from both the Churney and Ellsworth families. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Jessica “Jessie” (McNeil) Churney, Glace Bay; his wife’s parents, Patrick and Lillian (AuCoin), Reserve Mines; his brother-in-law, Angus MacIntosh.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and Funeral Mass will take place Monday at 11 a.m., both in St. Elizabeth Seton Roman Catholic Church, Metropolitan Avenue, Lower Sackville. Palmer, Geoffrey David

Palmer, Geoffrey David – Age 67, Shubenacadie. It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Dad, on December 17, 2014, at home. Geoff is survived by sons, Clay (Stephanie), Corey (Carla MacMaster); grandson, Carson Geoffrey, Papa’s special boy, who gave him countless hours of pleasure; sister, Colleen Palmer; friend, Cecile Isaac; many sisters and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by parents, Robert and Margaret Palmer; his wife, the former Delta Cameron; sister, Linda Williams, brother, Eugene in infancy.

Kerr, Dominique

Kerr, Dominique – Age 55, Meaghers Grant, passed away December 14, 2014 in Musquodoboit Valley Memorial Hospital, Middle Musquodoboit. Born in Germany, she was a daughter of Jeanine DesChanel and the late René Jaillet. Dominique and her family moved to Quebec when she was a child. She spent most of her working life with Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority, from where she retired after 27 years. She started her little bakery in the spring of 2013 and enjoyed all her visitors, for both treats and for sharing faith and troubles. She loved all animals, even from a young age, and finally had her own variety of creatures, including chickens, ducks, rabbits, an injured pet crow, and cats and dogs. She enjoyed her little goat farm and missed them when she could no longer go to the barn.

Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Stuart; children, Gwen, Halifax; Ulric, Alberta; Sebastién, St. John’s, Nfld.; brother, Patrick, Quebec. She is missed by her dog, Marley.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. in the Meaghers Grant Fire Hall. Memorial donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.

Hill, Betty

Hill, Betty – Age 88, of Shubenacadie, died December 12, 2014, at home. Born in Erindale, Ont., she was the eldest daughter of Delmar and Marjorie Barker. What does one say about their mom? She had a green thumb, her baking was yummy, and she loved to bowl. She was raised Anglican but attended Shubenacadie United with her daughter.

Betty is survived by her children, Paul (Barb), Cathy (Al Flemming); Brian; youngest sister, Mary; her favourite niece, Linda; grandchildren, Sandra, Kelly, Kim, Mike and Mark; great-grandchildren, Janisha, Jayden, Logan, and twins Adam and Christian. She was predeceased by her husband, George; sisters, Grace and Ruth.

Betty has been cremated under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. A graveside service is planned for a future date in Preeper Hill Cemetery, Shubenacadie. Isenor, Donald Ross

Isenor, Donald Ross – Age 84, of Dutch Settlement and Enfield, passed away on December 5, 2014, in Harbour View Lodge Nursing Home, Sheet Harbour. Born in Dutch Settlement, he was a son of the late Serena (Isenor) Richard. Ross’ love of working the land made farming a pleasure. He worked on several farms in the Dutch Settlement area, had a cleaning job at the airport, and lastly delivered the rural mail. Playing cards and working at jigsaw puzzles were two things that Ross enjoyed.

Surviving are sisters, June Rogers, Madeline (Fenton) Isenor, Jean (Francis) Hill, numerous nieces and nephews; as well as good friend, Derek Parnell. Besides his mother, he was predeceased by grandparents, William and Essie Isenor; sister, Florine Wile; stepfather, Raymond Richard; a niece and a nephew.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral service will be Tuesday, at 2 p.m., in St. George’s Anglican Church, Dutch Settlement, Rev. Canon David Fletcher officiating, assisted by Rev. Patty McKenna. Burial will follow in St. George’s Cemetery. Donations in Ross’ memory may be made to St. George’s Anglican Church or Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia

Corbin-Shay, Linda C.

Corbin-Shay, Linda C. – Age 59. November 16, 2014 marks the start of a celebration of the life of a wonderful woman, mother, and daughter, Linda Corbin-Shay. Born in Kentville February 18, 1955, she was a daughter of Elaine and Doran Corbin. Graduating from the VG School of Nursing in 1974, and again with her B.Sc. in nursing from Charles Stuart University in 2008, Linda worked in the 7A Prenatal Special Care Unit at the IWK Grace Hospital for nearly 30 years. At 15 she met her high school sweetheart, Darrell Whylie Shay, and married on July 5, 1980. Linda could often be seen supporting her children around the province, and often the world. She will always be remembered for her love of travelling, and in the past three years alone Linda saw New York, Boston, Ottawa, Uganda, and Cuba. Her kind, loving, and blunt nature will forever be cherished by her friends and family, and mirrored in her three amazing children.

She is survived by husband, Darrell; their children and partners, Laura (Alex), Kyle (Lori), and Heather (Shawn). Linda will also be loved and remembered by her siblings, Barry (Ann), Dwight (Doris), Marilyn Sturgeon, and Jocelyn Fielden; extended family, Danny (Kathy), Theresa (Ron), Raymond (Nancy), Gladys Hiltz, Nancy (Brian), Don (Eleanor).

Linda ensured her final hours passed on her own terms, surrounded by family in the care of the wonderful staff of Twin Oaks Hospital. Linda, family and friends wish to give special thanks to her dear friends, Mary Hansen and Sherry Carter, the staff of Twin Oaks, and the VG Gyne Oncology unit.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit. Family and friends are invited to celebrate the life of Linda during visitations at Good Shepherd Congregational Church, Lawrencetown, from 12:30-2:30 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, November 20, as well as a funeral service in First United Church, Musquodoboit Harbour, Friday, November 21, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Linda has requested that donations be made to Canadian Ovarian Cancer Society.
